Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation <strong>(Final Version Released!)</strong>
Time

Oh ! Reading your excellent updated first post yesterday and today, I’ve just learned you capitulated for the escape pod color (the worst change in the hole trilogy).

I suppose there would be a too consequent loss of informations if you used the 2004 version for the hole shot, instead of the blu ray with recovered highlights ?

Also, I have to hope the return of the rotoscoped blue door for my redfish’s wedding anniversary. 😉

Joking aside, your final product will certainly be a masterpiece, even in order to watch the SE : the supreme pleasure of eating a Big Mac with silver cutlery. 😃

You must understand. The goal is not to make the walls of the Tantive white

Neither is it my goal. I tried to reduce a cast which is layed on the hole shot, not to change the color of the walls (you can see that there is a very subtle mint color in my version, but perhaps a little to blue as I said).

Actually, it could be closer to how the set would look under a neutral lighting, and of course, the actual lighting was not exactly white, so the highlight should probably be slightly warmer.

But, if you look at the black areas under the red lights on the back ground, they have no reason to be greenish and should be redish. But of course, a green cast can be the consequence of the printing process.

Aniway, those color choices (because there has to be a choice, even with many references) are not simple. 😃

Yes, it seems to be better ! About that shot in particular (but I understand the point is to build a global correction for the scene), I would be tempted to reduce a little the green cast : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/189370/picture:0.

Perhaps my version is a little too blue and has a wrong contrast and I don’t know how would that change fit for the hole scene. What do you think ?

Sorry for nitpicking, your work is amazing ! 😉

Beautiful ! You also posted this photo a few months ago : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/188516.

The colors and the correction I tried to do could be a litte wrong, but accordind to it, there seems to be differents colors in the Tantive IV walls : the walls themself are slighly mint colored, whereas the “boxes” on the walls are off-white but on the yellow side. And there would be a third tint for the door jambs, which are a more neutral white.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI - Grindhouse 35mm LPP (Released)

Comparison of Blu Ray and LPP sources for Star Wars and Jedi : http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/187884/picture:0

I matched the colors to show the sharpness difference, which seems to be smaller for Jedi, in my opinion.

Jedi : Despecialized 2.5 matched to Grindhouse vs Grindhouse
Star Wars : Neverar correction vs Poita’s scan of the LPP matched to Neverar

Yes, but the Jedi LPP is clearly a better source than the Star Wars LPP, in terms of sharpness etc.

Is it not an official presentation print (I could be mistaken), as opposed to the Spanish LPP of Star Wars, which is the dupe of another print and has many flaws ?

A good presentation print can have almost as much informations as the 2004 master - which is from the negative but manipulated with DNR and regraining. We saw that with a tech print of Star Wars, but it could be true with other kinds of prints, even if they are less sharp than the technicolor, of course.

Wasn’t the use of Blu Ray footages to build correct HD versions of the OT a stopgap until we have good original sources ?

Maybe you could give to each shot the best look possible ? So, the restoration of the filtered grading would be part of the despecialization and your final product would be useful for other fan edits ?

As for the Burning Homestead scan, I have recently tried to make it deeper and more colorful and contrasty and the result was pretty nice but certainly not true to the original theatrical grading.

Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

Very interesting !

Williarob, is still projected a SSE v.2 using the new scan of the LPP ?

Because, if we had a full Eastman film (I assume Poita has a lot of Eastman reels scans for SW), wouldn’t be a good way to use the Eastman scan color balanced using a set of neutral shots for each reel, as color reference, the LPP balanced with dedication as color reference, a shot by shot color matching and a final luminance adjustment ?

IMO, cleaning this hypothetic Eastman print would be better than cleaning the LPP a second time.

But I’ve read there are exciting things happening under Team Blu’s banner, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a project similar to that ! 😉
