Is a Star Wars movie your favorite movie?

I get it when it’s folks who were around for the original releases. You (I’m assuming) and I grew up with an OT box set. We first saw them in rapid succession and they’ve always seemed like parts of a whole. I imagine living through a three-year gap between installments gives you a much different perspective. I can definitely see how people might only dig the original, especially since it functions so well as a standalone story.

I had that same conversation with someone years ago about Indiana Jones. They grew up with a six hour film, just as you’re pointing out with Star Wars. It is indeed a very different deal when several years pass between films. Plus, those were formative years. You can change quite a bit from 15 to 18.

I didn’t care for Empire because I’d changed in those three years. Alien had become my go-to outer space film. It was much deeper and I connected with it much more.

The difference was much more pronounced with Return. By then it had been six years, I was in my twenties, working, paying rent, had bought a car, had a long term relationship, etc. I had no interest in a kid’s version of my beloved Star Wars from several years earlier.

Star Wars became the franchise to me. A great film that moved me all those years earlier and couldn’t be topped. Life had taken place between the films. Entirely different than a bathroom break between for the box setters of the 1990s.

To be clear; There is absolutely nothing wrong with discovering the OT as a finished entity box set. You get here when you get here.

This is a perspective that I (having seen the non-SE editions maybe once and then growing up with the SE VHS set before making gradual realizations about quality of the PT, the SE, and the OT over time) haven’t ever thought of before. Thanks for the enlightenment.

As long as we get the OUT, I’m fine with and even curious about potential new iterations of the SE.

Same here. It’s important to point out though, that even though the '97SE didn’t come out on DVD, it did get a wide theatrical release and my generation did grow up with it on VHS, so there is definitely some nostalgia for it and nostalgia is very much the wave Disney is surfing right now.

Oh definitely, my earliest actual memory of Star Wars was the theatrical release of the SE when I was seven years old (though I know I watched the Faces tapes a year or two before), and I wore out that set of SE tapes. I just meant that there’s got to be significantly fewer folks who are very interested in that version because it was the standard version for such a relatively short amount of time. Moreover, unlike the small tweaks between the 2004 and 2011 versions, the 2004 cut actually retconned aspects of the 1997 one, so it exists in this weird limbo of being obsolete in terms of continuity without any of the purist virtues of being original. I’d definitely like to watch it if it was included in a 40th anniversary set for nostalgia’s sake, but the truth is I don’t think I’ve felt strongly enough about it to watch the 97 all the way through since the 04 came out (I have watched selected scenes from your Respecialized and Team Blu’s upscale a few times, though).

Man. Every time I see a post like this is makes me facepalm about how stupid the whole Lucas revisionism thing was. Ugh.

Yeah what a massive fucking loser he sounds like.

Take comfort in knowing he’s probably very sad inside and feels very inadequate as a person and that you’ll probably outperform him in life.

I don’t take kindly to this post. It offends and saddens me greatly. Maybe you didn’t understand my response but that is not an excuse to label me in this fashion without having a clue as to what I said.

There is no need to be hurtful.

I was replying to and agreeing with MFM about darthrush’s post. Didn’t see you slip your reply in between.

I would only remove the general misanthropy from my response, but the sentiment is the same regarding the guy rush was referring to, although I’d say give him another chance after a while. People tend to grow out of those fazes.

Maybe. It just annoys me when people are shitty to other people for inane reasons.

I’m annoyed that I have to hold off on listening to my Christmas radio station until my self-imposed date of “After Thanksgiving.”

I love getting into the spirit, but I don’t wanna do it too early.

Too much Christmas music too soon at a young age has probably turned me off to Christmas music forever. Be careful, after Thanksgiving sounds about right.

Man, I dunno. Maybe we were just low-key enough that it never felt overdone, but I freaking love this time of year.

This. We set up our tree last night, if that gives up an idea.

That’s still a bit too early for me haha

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Man. I gotta give Dave huge props as usual.

When I heard they were coming to Rebels, I was super excited. I was really glad that they were mostly ignoring all the bullshit fanfiction crap Karen Traviss had written about them, but when I heard about the pacifist angle, I was disappointed but willing to hear them out.

The first few episodes with Satine and the pacifist Mandalorians did not fill me with hope, but by the end of series and the Mandalorian arc, I was totally blown away. Fantastic development for several big characters and Mandalore itself. Some of the best Star Wars ever written, I’d argue.

And now with Rebels, that’s all showing signs of continuing. I really dug the first episodes with Fenn Rau, and was glad to see him come back. He’s a cool guy, so it’ll be neat to see where they take him as the show progresses.

And Sabine I was also iffy on coming into the show, but after this episode she’s definitely a certified badass. It’s cool to see her coming into her own.

The thing about Star Wars is that I can sit down and watch it whenever. It never gets old to me. It’s like a comfort food or a bad day cure.

I can just sit down with it when I need cheering up and it does that. I can throw it on on a cloudy day off in bed and have a great day off. I can just toss it on any time and it’s never old and never too much.

Have I seen movies that have made me think more, or had amazing camera work, or incredible writing and deep characters and twisty plots, movies that are probably objectively better? Yes, of course, but with pretty much every movie I’m one and done. Not so with Star Wars.

That’s why it’s my favorite.
