The whole back story is dumb. If Obi-Wan had any serious plans with Luke, he would have raised him himself and, more importantly, started his training at the very early age.

I have two explanations for this thing. One is simply being a plot hole. The other is that Obi-Wan and Yoda knew that Luke could never defeat the Emperor and therefore they planned to use Luke just to trigger Anakin's return who would then destroy the Emperor (which is what eventually happened in ROTJ).

It kinda makes sense. Maybe he wanted to avoid him becoming arrogant because his powers manifest to early. If he was just a regular dude who discovered the Force all of the sudden he would have more appreciation for it.

Instead of growing up an knowing that he was special from the beginning.

I am sorry but that doesn't make sense. I don't see why would leaving something to chance be better than controlling it. Jedi trained from the early age for thousands of years and yet they manged to be more than decent people (at least that's what they show us). In fact, by just letting him deal with it by himself would increase the chance of him becoming arrogant and misuse his powers. Far more than by carefully raising him in a good spirit (to be selfless, humble etc.) and to teach him to use his powers for good purposes.

On the other hand, practically speaking, Ben and Yoda pretty much saw him as a tool to defeat the Emperor. I just don't see the reason why they chose to throw him in with a few months of training instead of an entire life of training.

I think it makes perfect sense, especially if you want to frame it with the PT because the Jedi in the PT are all arrogant assholes who basically set themselves up to fall. Anakin was about as arrogant as they come because we see him go from cute, innocent, kind-hearted farmboy to raging jerkface through the PT in large part because he's always talked about as special.

Now, if you want to ignore the PT, it makes less sense, of course, outside of Obi-Wan wanting to train Luke earlier, and Owen disallowing contact out of fear for Luke's safety while Obi-Wan waited for the Force (or whatever) to bring them together at the right time.

TFU was fun as long as you take it out of its literal context.

To me, TFU would be the story the old, grizzled veteran Rebels tell the new kids over a hushed campfire to keep their morale up. It's more the story of the spirit of the Rebellion than an actual person to me: maybe there's some truth to it, but maybe it's also been embellished over the years and now you have someone who rips Star Destroyers out of the sky like paper planes and goes toe-to-toe with Vader and the Emperor and almost comes out on top.

To me, the idea that the Rebels have myths and propaganda and campfire stories is pretty attractive, and for me, that explanation is enough to allow me to enjoy TFU, as honestly over-the-top and stupid as the story itself is. It really is a story about how a person with a strong enough will can overcome someone's immense hubris, as Bingo said. It's a morality play: Vader and Palpatine think they can control the will of the people, keep them down, keep them doing their bidding through commands or manipulation, but they show them how it really is: if they stand tall and believe in their cause, they can threaten the entire Empire.

So, to me, TFU is the best Rebel propaganda piece ever penned. And, come on, the Ultimate Sith Edition was amazing, too. Just totally murdering ever Rebel ever just felt right. The game was fun, had neat controls and mechanics and made you feel really cool and powerful. It felt like a Star Wars game, too, and brought back a lot of good Jedi Knight memories in terms of combat. It fell pray to the annoying combo system that all those hack-and-slash RPGs have, but didn't make it fun like the LOTR games, and it had far too many quicktime events, but it was still a sight more fun than a lot of Lucasarts fare at the time.

TFU was what gave me a lot of hope for 1313. TFU was a step in the right direction in terms of quality, sure it wasn't enough of a step, but it was a step at least, and I felt like 1313 was going to continue that move towards good Star Wars games.

Couldn't see them, had to stop the whole page to stop freezing. Could you change them to links, thanks.

I was afraid of that. I linked all but the first three. Let me know if it fixes the problem!

Yeah, sorry if it makes people chug. I would definitely hide them inside a spoiler or cut tag if I could. =/

They're worth seeing, though.

There are a couple more concepts in here (mostly the same stuff, though) with a bit of context as well.

I like the troop transport design for Rebels. Looks like it has doors leading inside so the poor stormies aren't more sitting ducks than they usually are. I'm so looking forward to seeing some proper Rise-of-the-Empire, iron-fist, crush-the-enemy stuff in this show.

Doubt this show already? Tsk tsk.

I was searching for some old Joe Johnston concepts yesterday when I was futzing around and stumbled across these. Take a look at some of this amazing concept art from Rebels shown at NYCC and their inspirations:

First, something familiar... (sorry if I break your PC) (right-click and "View Images" for larger versions, or check out the sources at the bottom of the post!)

It's spot-on.

I cannot wait to see this on my TV screen.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0325.jpg

I can imagine these being little Imperial scout ships or something with a small compliment of TIEs for defense... or a way to ferry small TIE squadrons to battle (since TIEs don't have hyperdrives themselves). It's based on the ship in the last link. I loved the design of this ship and I was sorry we never got to see more of it.

I love that they're looking at the Incredible Cross Sections books. I pored over these every chance I had as a kid. I knew the anatomy of these ships inside and out.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0313.jpg

I love this attention to detail...

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0319.jpg

They nailed the design.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0312.jpg

It's a bit stubbier than the normal TIEs... what does that remind me of...

This is a good one. Based off the old Kenner toy that made a few comic appearances.

Joe Johnston concept for ROTJ. Replicated it almost exactly.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ta_hZkNB0AQ/TWdf1ljClkI/AAAAAAAABpw/737oJmMC0xM/s1600/022511.png

I love this design. I remember it from the old comics (as above) and I remember it was the prototype AT-ST from Galactic Battlegrounds. It's such an amazing design to me. It just "fits".

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0296.jpg

And here it is from 1979.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0299.jpg

The interior feels OT without being a rip off of the ROTJ version and without being too PT.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0294.jpg

I love these precursor AT-AT pilot-looking guys. I love the helmets.

Definitely based off these guys.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0292.jpg

Ah, here's another classic look...

http://i.imgur.com/3eAws7t.jpg

A bit better contrast.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0290.jpg

This is great. It's the E-11 look with those early rounded barrel flares from the concepts and posters.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0285.jpg

Yet another classic. I think they nailed this design. Familiar, yet not exactly the same.

http://techexile.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/SAM_0283.jpg

Check out the designs here, especially the tops of the buildings. It feels like more OT concept art to me.

http://i.imgur.com/ydV9V26.jpg

The main ship. I like it. Falcon without being Falcon.

http://i.imgur.com/tJKNdK4.jpg

Also a bit The Old Republic...

http://24.media.tumblr.com/b45c416a0aea4c5d4a20a94aad2aec96/tumblr_mqpyjppYU81qdbhwwo4_500.jpg

The design of the show is amazing. It's gorgeous. It's retro and nostalgic with so many designs based off of old concept art, and designs that I personally loved from my Art of Star Wars books, and best yet, it so perfectly screams OT. If this stuff doesn't get you jazzed for the show, then I dunno what will.

It would be cool to see a villain who was neither Sith nor Jedi, but who used the Force in its entirety. No focus on anger or fear, nor a demand that these emotions be removed. More a Sequel Trilogy idea, where Luke would have to face an opponent who defied simple classification.

Jolee Bindo? It's a video game, I know, but KOTOR was pretty amazing.

I dunno. I like the Inquisitor. He looks cool to me. I was a bit annoyed about the double bladed saber when I saw it, but meh. I like that his facial markings are the same as the Son's from the crazy Forcegods episode of The Clone Wars.

This is Dave Filoni we're talking about here. The man brought Darth Maul back and made it a damn fine story. The guy made stomachable Jar-Jar episodes. He made the Mandalorians into pacifists and it turned out awesome.

As far as I'm concerned, Filoni is Lucas 2.0. He was the keeper of the flame during The Clone Wars, and I have nothing but 100% faith and respect in the man to make Star Wars right.

When Disney gives someone $4 billion for their product, they take over deciding how that product is handled.  All this blather about Lucas being very involved, consulting, talking to the director and writer, etc, etc is just damage control for the TFNers, who have already decided their world has come to an end.

The ironic thing is that the TFN'ers DON"T want Lucas involved, because that will contradict everything they have fought for in the past 10 years regarding the 'The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker' bullshit.

First, they don't want Lucas involved so if anyone complains about the ST they can point it all at JJ Abrams.  But now that Lucas is (involved in some capacity), it will give ammo to the people who bashed Lucas during the PT days.

Second, they don't want Lucas involved so they can call the ST an 'add on' story so Episode 1-6 can stay as the real story.  For years and years those morons called out any of us who questioned that Lucas never intended the story to be 'The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker' in 1977.  Now with Lucas involved with the ST, it throws the whole 1-6 story out the door, as the story is now 1-9.

I can't tell you how many TFN'ers have posted that they just wont recognize the ST, as they still believe that Lucas isn't involved in it at all.  They said the ST is like the EU, it exists, but it won't get into the way of their pretty little 'Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker' story.

It's comical to listen to them rationalize it now, as I keep shoving it in their face that the Saga is now 1-9, and they go crazy!  Or better yet I say the saga is Episodes 4,5,6,7,8,9 and the PT doesn't exist!  LOL!

JABBA

I have seen you like to kiss. I like the way you kiss.

(he grins)

And I like to kiss, also!

Leia looks at Threepio, questioningly.

THREEPIO

You're not going to like it, Your Highness.

LEIA

Death?

THREEPIO

Worse.

Jabba speaks to the Guards holding Leia and they bring her toward him. Inexorably, her tiny face crosses the distance to his immense blob of a head. Jabba puckers up. Leia looks sick.

Am I the only one who feels like that sounds like a bit of PT dialogue between Anakin and Padme? "I don't like sand, but I like to kiss!"

On the finale of RoTJ, they should have had the Rebels capture the Death Star and crash it into Had Abbadon. Maybe have Luke vs. Vader vs. Palpatine on the Death Star as it is now, only have the battle take place in the control room of the station in front of the crew, and upon Luke and Vader emerging victorious, one of them commands the crew of the station, stunned and having no reason to attack Luke with the death of their master, to set it on a collision course with the throne world of the Empire and abandon the station. You could have them give a speech about how the heart of evil must be destroyed and blah blah blah.

Then you get your single massive explosion, and you could play up either Vader's redemption (if you make him give the command to crash the Death Star and destroy everything he fought for and helped to build as a Sith), or Luke becoming the new "benevolent Emperor" giving his first and last order as Emperor to destroy the station and the heart of evil (if he gives the order, it makes it a metaphor for him having absolute power [The Dark Side] within his grasp and casting it aside for peace and justice [The Light Side]).

Obviously that's a pretty rough idea, but you get the picture.

On the subject of levels in Star Wars games so difficult you have a nervous breakdown, playing as the Imperials on the Kashyyyk - Islands map in Battlefront (for PS2, if it matters) is damn near impossible to win. The Rebels have a huge advantage, I'm guessing because of the Wookiee reinforcements. I've played it countless times in Instant Action and the best scenario is that I play as a pilot, take one of the Rebel's command posts, then jump back into the TIE, clear a path to the Rebel's main command post's entrance before landing (it's inside a Wookiee house) manage to take said command post (which takes much longer than the other posts) and distract/kill enough Rebel units who try to get inside and kill me. Then, by the time I'm inevitably killed, the Imperials hopefully still have a base with vehicles so I can fly around, pick off some Rebels from the air and keep making sure I've got a base so the Rebels can't win.

In any scenario, there's at least 40 Imperials left by the time all my dudes are killed. If there are any more it's usually impossible for me to win, since they can get enough units to all of the bases to kill me or just spawn right in as I'm in the middle of trying to take their base. I've ended the match with 50-60 kills and no deaths and still lost. I think I might've beat it one time the old-fashioned way by just having an insanely good ground game as a soldier, but air superiority seems the only real way to go.

Reading that and playing the BF4 beta all week make me so excited for Battlefront III.
