The Prequel Era Has Ended, Long Live the Original Trilogy!
Time

I've been feeling this since I started looking at the Black Series figures in stores. I'm seeing fewer and fewer PT-related things these days, and more and more OT-related things. Retro packaging on toys in the stores, giant OT vehicles, no more PT characters on the cards...

With the Rebels announcements and concept art and what not, as well as the material seen since then, including the amazing video Tobar links above, which has some great moments (that Ralph McQuarrie book looks incredible), it really came home that we've all made it out of our "Dark Times". The PT Era really is over.

I'm not sure what 1977 felt like, but it really must have been something like this. It's like going back in time to when Star Wars was just Star Wars.

It's a beautiful time to be a Star Wars fan, and, with the OT-focused mentality we're seeing from Disney, hopefully it stays that way.

There isn't really that much that needs to be avoided in the prequels at all. We need to avoid avoiding them, which doesn't seem to be happening with the crew behind the movies so far, which is just a HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE.....

Several new Death Stars are built

....HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE HUGE injustice.

And thanks God for that. My hopes for the new films is that they ignore the prequels completely. Disney/ Lucasfilm seem to be starting down that route already. Cancelling the PT era show, moving away from heavy reliance on CG and digital filming, merchandise more concentrated on the OT era, etc etc. Lucas had a hard-on for the prequels and that all we got; prequels crap this and prequel crap that. The only saving grace was the Clone Wars cartoon series which, thankfully, was run by others and NOT George (even though you could see when he was heavily involved with certain stories)

The OT is almost universally loved by SW fans; the Prequels almost universally hated by SW fans. There is no injustice that they would move away from those films. None at all. To have the new films anything like the prequels or to be influenced by them would be suicide for the franchise. Disney/ Lucasfilm NEED to make a good film if they have any hope of recouping their investment. Another film like the prequels is going to lose even more fans. But even the hardened prequelites/ Lucaslovers/ are threatening to ignore the films just because they may change the EU or ignore the prequels or just for the fact that it isn't going to be a George Lucas film. And, to be honest, i say good riddance.

The prequels were nowhere near as successful as the OT was. Forget what the top whatever lists say, they don't take into consideration how much ticket costs have risen ( well one site does). How many people actually went to see those movies. AOTC is almost out of the top 100 with ROTS not too far behind it. TPM is the only one even close to the OT in the charts and that was probably down to the fact that it was an new Star Wars film after all those years without anything. Only a handful of die hard SW fans went to see AOTC & ROTS more than once.

The prequels are like that relative who the family hates. You know they are a part of the family but you know it's best to avoid them like the plague

Amen.

Jango's thoughts on greenscreen (fun video)
Time

I loved that little blooper reel. It's actually a good parody of the whole green screen problem and Lucas' directing.

I really enjoyed Bounty Hunter. It was nice to play a Star Wars game that wasn't about Jedi. It's right up there with games like Republic Commando for me: some of the only good things to come out of the Prequel Era.

I actually liked Jango as a character (mostly because of Bounty Hunter). I just wish they had gone with a different Boba Fett connection for the film instead of the inane "clone son" junk. Maybe making Boba the son of Jaster Mereel, Jango's mentor in the Open Seasons comic series, who Jango promised to raise as his own.

But I digress... it's interesting how so many parts of the Prequel films were expanded into better, more solid characters by EU canon, like The Clone Wars did with Anakin. It's such a shame that the whole PT era was bungled in such an all-encompassing way.

Holy shit, Mike. That is beautiful.

I pretty much shit myself when you switched over to Legacy from the BluRay. Like seeing that frame again for the first time.

And the detail! The tiny detail that someone building that set thought to put in there that had been subsequently erased by Lowry's "restoration" is finally back. That's what real restorations should be about.

The New Generation of Star Wars Fans
Time

I stumbled across this letter (just the first one and the response, the rest of the article is different) that really shows the polarizing difference between we, the "Old Guard" and the newer generation that either has never seen the OT, or grew up with the PT and saw the OT later.

The article writer's heart is in the right place, even though a lot of his "facts" aren't, but I'm curious as to what OT.com thinks about the new generation of Star Wars fans that, regardless of preserving film history and restoring the OT and whatnot, prefers the PT to the OT.

When does Maul use the force exactly? I think he could be even more intriguing if he never had a line, and wasn't a force-user.

Then again, what if he was the assassin in AOTC, and Dooku the mastermind behind the murder plot?

He uses it at least once, picking up a battle droid torso and flinging it at a door control to open the way to the reactor room.

Well, can't say she doesn't fit DisneyXD's target audience -- that dumb name has always implied silly shenanigans and hardcore-ness.

While I am a bit tired of the inane "spunky, feisty, sassy" female character type, I think she could definitely have merit, especially since Dave is definitely good at developing characters.

Finally some non-Force Sensitives!

Zeb looks sweet. He's definitely going to be the source of lots of laughs and badass moments. It's nice to see that he's not an outright copy of any previous characters that come to mind.

Sabine is cool, too, actually. Like Zeb, she's mostly her own thing. Pretty original character. Not your standard Boba Fett/Jango Fett clone (puns!) or post-Traviss Mary-Sue badass warrior god Mando, not super serious soldier type, not pacifist New Mandalorian or Death Watch sinister evil. Just a fun, normal character, which reminds us that there's diversity for these people still.

So far, these are the two characters I'm most interested in. I'm glad they've revealed them now, because with all the Jedi talk it's been kinda hurting my hopes for the show. Now I'm definitely back to feeling really good about it.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

TCW being purely a kid's show is up for debate. Characters often die, and not in pleasant ways. The first Jar Jar centric episode had the strong implication Anakin and Padme had a secret romantic interlude in a Naboo spacecraft, where Mr. Binks finds a Jedi robe. (And wonders aloud how it got there!) Ziro the Hutt and Sly Snootles were definitely in a physical relationship.

Man, there's a later Jar Jar episode with what I thought was a particularly brutal death later on in the series.

I think it looked pretty good. Really good to see OT stuff on the screen again. I cannot wait to see it replace all the PT junk we have in stores now.

At the same time, literally nothing happened in the trailer, so I can't make any judgements beyond how it "felt" to me, and it felt pretty close to the OT.

I was hoping it would be a little more distinct from the Clone Wars in terms of looks, and while characters are definitely a little "softer" I can't help but think that this is prototype rendering because I don't see why they would abandon the polish they had in the Clone Wars... if you watch that in 1080p the textures look almost hand-painted in that you can almost see brush strokes on them.

It could be that they're working with a budget similar to what they were working with for early seasons of The Clone Wars and will eventually move forward from the look they have now, but, again, it's a pretty proven format so I'm not sure why they'd slash the budget.

Either way, like I said, I can't make a super solid judgement on it at this time beyond that I trust in Dave and think he did an incredible job with The Clone Wars and that I'm excited to see the OT-era back on screen again.

Is the theater where you saw Star Wars still standing ?
Time

Being born in 1989, I didn't really get a chance to see the originals in theater. In fact, I didn't even remember seeing Star Wars until I was maybe four or five? Maybe six? Not a clue.

I'm not sure why I saw it. I just remember a trip to the video store and coming home with Star Wars. I have a notoriously shit long-term memory, but I still very clearly remember seeing Darth Vader for the first time.

I'm not sure the film stuck with me right then or not. I do remember seeing at least The Empire Strikes Back with my cousin during either a re-release of the originals, or the theatrical run of the SE when I was seven or eight. Very clear memories of being in a theater watching the scene where the wampa attacks Luke. No idea which theater it was. Pretty sure it was in Tucson, though.
