What's the Weather Like Where You Live?
Time

Here in Las Vegas, our weather has gone from supper hot to just hot. We seem to be over our 100+ degree days, and now the upper 90's is the norm. Our rainy season officially started a few weeks ago, but yesterday we had our first real downpour of the season. The air was thick with the smell of ozone and creosote.

Ugh I miss that smell. Nothing like it.

What Have You Been Eating?
Time

Not the most recent, but my ladyfriend and I cooked ourselves a fantastic Canadian Thanksgiving meal including a seven-pound turkey (way too big for two, next time maybe five or less) brined overnight using Alton Brown's recipe; mashed potatoes with chives, butter, pepper, and salt; cranberry sauce; stuffing; and rolls. Plus a pumpkin and apple pie for afterwards.

Delicious. Can't wait for American Thanksgiving. Every American or Canadian should have family in the other country so they can have two Thanksgivings.

Shameful video game confessions thread

Majora's Mask is a weird and very divisive game in the Zelda franchise; some people love it, some people hate it, but it's one of my favourites. It's creepy and melancholy and surreal. It's like David Lynch does Zelda, almost. The entire game can be taken in many different ways: as some sort of bad dream Link has after the events of Ocarina, as some sort of purgatory a dead Link encounters on his way to the afterlife, et cetera. The return of so many Ocarina characters in altered roles that sometimes parody the original role of the character in Ocarina makes the whole game feel uneasy and weird, especially if you've replayed Ocarina several times and know the characters well.

I don't really know how to describe it. Ocarina has the traditional heroic journey story and feel to it with a triumphant if bittersweet ending (as the Japanese love to do), but Majora's Mask is a totally different animal with a totally different feel. A lot of it has to do with the story, obviously (with Ocarina's being more traditional, and Majora's Mask being more concerned with death, depression, impending mortality, and the legacy one leaves behind), but I think one of the major factors is the music used.

Ocarina's score is largely sweeping and orchestral and exciting, adventurous, and triumphant. The music design in Majora's Mask on the other hand is disjointed and creepy, melancholy, tense... they compliment the story motifs well, and I really think that they are responsible for much of the feel of the game.

A lot of people draw comparisons between Majora's Mask and The Empire Strikes Back in terms of the story being darker than the one before, but I'm not sure that gives the correct sense of how Majora's Mask feels, because the themes it deals with make Empire look a bit like a nursery rhyme.

It's worth playing, though, even if it takes time to get used to. Definitely try to 100% Ocarina first to refresh your memory of the characters involved and their roles, so you can see how different and strange (almost mockeries?) they become in Majora's Mask. Then play Majora's Mask again after a bit to really let it sink in. I would definitely suggest that you try to 100% it, or at least complete the Bomber's Notebook sidequests. It's a heavy game.

Going WAY back, I like how Tobar points out the visuals of "Droids in Distress." Utterly beautiful stuff, which I gushed all about in my review of the episode:
http://echenry.com/review-star-wars-rebels-droids-in-distress/

Concerning what Filoni said in the interview, I really like that they're not TOO focused on crossing-over with the characters from the feature films. Seeing R2, C-3PO, and Bail was fun, and I'm sure we'll see more cameos here and there, but probably not something that will become a staple with the show. Focusing on new characters is a definite step forward for Star Wars.

I just like that now, we have some characters that can actually SURPRISE us. With the Clone Wars, I knew every single time how it would come out. Obi-Wan's little romance with Satine? It had to end. Anakin and Ahsoka? It had to end. Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padme, and all the other characters from the films could only develop as far as they came in RotS, and that wasn't very far at all. So overall, there weren't many compelling character moments in the show.

But with Rebels, every second is something totally new. I see new characters developing, and I get to learn more about them with each passing moment. It's fantastic.

Excellent points all around.

I do enjoy animals.

My parents bought my brother and I a golden retriever/lab mix when we moved out to the country as a family dog to watch over us as we ran around in the desert all day long. His name was General. He came from a military family who was being reassigned to Hawaii, and the dog would have been quarantined for so long that they didn't want to put him through it, so he became ours. He got his name because the guy's brother had a dog named Sarge and his dog had to outrank his brother's.

General was like a second brother to me. The three of us would go out chasing coyotes or just exploring. Sometimes we would lose sight of Gen, but he would always come bursting out of the bushes if we called him.

For a big dog, he never had too many of the problems big dogs get. He was arthritic near the end, but never had any bad hip dysplasia, even before the end he would always hoist his giant self off the floor to greet you at the door, jumping like the puppy he still was at heart. He always had a sensitive stomach, though, and required very fancy foods that were also expensive in order to keep him from puking or having horrible ear infections. We always joked that he ate better than we did.

I remember going down to visit my parents last year and seeing him. I'll always kick myself for not going out and sitting with him late at night and talking to him like I used to when I was feeling down, or taking him on a long walk, or letting him sleep in my room, because he died not long after. I will forever regret not being there with him when he needed me, but at the same time I guess I get to remember him as still peppy and happy. Still hurts to remember him, though. Every time I see a picture of him I feel it right in the heart.

Sorry to be a downer, but I do like to talk about how great he was. He was a shithead sometimes and once locked himself in the laundry room by accident and destroyed it trying to get out, but he was a good dog and I miss him all the time. It's perfectly normal.

Dammit! I knew it was either this way or the way I said. I took a gamble.

If that's the case, why does Obi-wan look so young?

Okay, I haven't actually seen the show, but after doing some quick reading, isn't his only appearance as a hologram recorded around or just after ROTS? So the message is something like 13 years old by the time it shows up on Rebels.

Yeah, the hologram featuring Obi-Wan is the one he records when he and Yoda break into the Jedi Temple to warn any survivors away.

Been playing the hell out of Battlefield 4 again for the past couple months. The new patches have done a LOT to clear up a great many of the issues that plagued the game at launch. It's nice to see DICE and EA committing themselves to making it right, even if it is late in the game, the Community Test Environment they released a few months ago is a fantastic resource that allows DICE to release frequent patches and repatches into a test environment to get feedback from players and make any necessary changes before they release the final patch into the actual game. All games need test centers.

Last song you listened to.

I've been hooked on Outrun electro in a huge way lately. Outrun is like the music from the future the 80's envisioned, to paraphrase Reddit's /r/outrun sub. It's heavy on synths and everything sounds like it came out of TRON or a video game. If you've seen Drive, you've heard Outrun.

Stuff like Kavinsky, Droid Bishop, Miami Nights 1984, Mega Drive, Power Glove, Dance With The Dead, Lazerhawk, and many others.

If you loved Drive's soundtrack or played Far Cry: Blood Dragon or even if you did neither, you should really check this stuff out.
