The appeal of Call of Duty to begin with was that it was a war shooter, not a flying space robot game. I’m not angry at them; I just have no desire to play it anymore.

Ditto. They haven’t put a game I’ve had an interest in since MW (though I did go back and play MW2 and 3 and enjoyed them later). Once they went to exoskeletons and future stuff, I stopped caring entirely. I’ll play Halo or Star Wars something or other if I want space guns.

I was pretty happy to see that Battlefield was WWI over 2143.

This year’s Eurovision continues to both delight and horrify in equal measure. Apparently it’s going out to China, and also to the USA for the first time!

Any American OT’ers spending their afternoon watching this televisual treat?

Probably not. We’ve been so saturated by shows like American Idol and The Voice and whatnot for so long that it would take a might blow to crack into that audience. Most people here probably don’t understand the kitsch and charm of Eurovision, and probably would just assume it’s a “Europoor” cheap knock-off of American Idol and it’s ilk.

I might like it then, as I never liked Idol. I only ever watched it early in each season when all the hilariously awful singers would audition. Even then I would only watch one or two episodes at most, then not at all for a year.

The awful part is the best part of Eurovision!

What didn't you like about TFA? SPOILERS
Time

Well we have to remember that TFA was the first film this series, so I’m sure we’ll learn more about the First Order and why it seems to be the main counterpoint to the New Republic. I assume that since they seem to be a very legitimate force that they have a great deal of resources and have established themselves as superior to the other remnants, and thus likely have planets in their command. They wouldn’t call themselves the Galactic Empire again, because they aren’t. The Empire was Palpatine’s thing, and he failed. Plus they don’t really seem to have an Empire yet. The Republic is definitely in charge right now, but I seem to remember Hux saying something about the illegitimacy of the Republic’s rule. Also, their logo is significantly different from the Empire’s.

To conjecture a little bit more, I assume the name “First Order” was likely a moniker chosen during what was likely a civil war between different factions of the Imperial Remnant. It’s possible that the First Order came out on top due to having the Force-sensitive Kylo Ren and (probably) Snoke, as well as Sith relics (like Vader’s mask) that connected them to the Galactic Empire, which would legitimize them. Again, it’s conjecture, but I assumed that by kidnapping it was meant that it was a form of conscription, wherein potential troopers were taken from their parents at birth (like Jedi) from member worlds, less that they snuck into Republic homes and snatched kids in the middle of the night.

As far as the Rebellion/Resistance goes, I assume that the Rebellion split after Palpatine was assassinated, with part of it becoming the New Republic in order to consolidate the gains made after Endor, while Leia’s faction just rolled over into the Resistance to keep up the fight against what was left of the Empire. They’re pretty much the same people doing the same thing.

Had they been a bit more punctual in coming over, they might have gotten a foothold, but as it is I think the market is too saturated.

I could be wrong though.

Am I a Bully?
Time

Trident said:

If Frink’s a bully, he’s a very particular kind. A kind that’s pretty rare actually.

I mean he’s maybe like a bit of a crusading bully. The kind who sees something that looks wrong and so takes it upon himself to fix it by driving the person away who’s committed the wrong. Sort of like a sheepdog chasing away the wolves. Now I don’t know if he really wants to be mean about it. Or if maybe he’s just not that sensitive. Or if maybe he figures there’s no soft way to do it. Or if he really doesn’t think some kinds of people feel pain. Or if maybe he just has a narrow sense of humor that really thinks it’s ok to stamp on a guy’s hand and they’ll both laugh together–and let’s face it, some do laugh. I know probably wouldn’t get too sore about it.

So sort of. Yeah. I guess I would have to call him a bully. But he’s the kind of bully I wouldn’t have a problem talking with. He’s not the kind I’d worry would really do me any harm or get sadistic happiness out of doing that. He’s just the type who’s maybe idealistic enough to not realize that there are real people behind the avatars he sometimes mocks. Or maybe I’m the idealistic one thinking everyone has feelings when maybe they don’t. I don’t know.

But sometimes I think maybe it’s like having a tame troll who’s sort of on our side most of the time?

One that does seem to get a kick out of making some people feel stupid and/or not liked, but only if they do something to ‘deserve it’ first? Now this is tough for me to say because he’s never picked on me personally. So I sort of feel like I’m kicking him when he hasn’t done the same to me. So that’s not really fair. But at the same time I also strangely think Frink’s fair at taking criticism. So that’s why I sort of think he’ll understand what I’m saying. Like I say, if he’s a bully, he’s a very particular kind.

Peace.

Apt.

Thanks,

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Saw it a second time and gotta say I enjoyed it even more. It still felt focused and tight while handling so many characters.

Yeah, let’s take a moment and talk about how they managed to at least do a little development on all the old characters while introducing a few new ones and hashing them out all in the span of about two hours without being boring. A lot of movies have struggled with fewer characters, let alone at least a dozen.

Rewatched Iron Man yesterday. Gwyneth Paltrow can’t act. At all.

Yeah, Iron Man is a bit rough around the edges in some places. I thought she was okay as Pepper, but after they completely ruined her character (and threatened to ruin RDJ’s character) in Iron Man 2 and 3, I’m honestly kinda glad she hasn’t been back.

How many times are we going to have to rehash why the Resistance exists?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proxy_wars

Yeah, I have no clue why people have so much trouble with the Resistance. It was obvious to me just from reading the crawl and watching various scenes in the movie that the whole idea is that there’s what amounts to a cold war going on between the New Republic and various fractured Imperial Remnants (because there’s no way a Galactic Empire on a thousand worlds just ends after one battle on a forest moon), most notably the First Order, and since the New Republic can’t/doesn’t want to openly wage war against the First Order, the Resistance popped up with under-the-table Republic support. It’s that simple and was adequately explained in the film, as adequately as the Imperial Senate and the Empire’s role in the galaxy in the original Star Wars.

People complained about all the exposition and political drama in the PT and after leaving TFA I feel like a lot of those same people were saying “I wish there was more exposition and political drama!”

Wasn’t there a cut scene shot with Leia communicating with the leader of the Republic?

Yeah, I mentioned that bit. I feel like that would have made the scene a lot better. Just… “Why should we care?”

SilverWook said:
We didn’t see anyone on Alderaan when it was destroyed at all. Obi Wan’s reaction and description of what he sensed does sell how awful an event it was. Star Wars has never been about getting too graphic with violence.

But we still care about it in as much as it’s the goal for our heroes for the first half of the movie.

Funny that George never had the notion to shoot Jimmy Smits in old age makeup for the SE.

Shh, someone will hear.
