The Terminator (1984) - Original Theatrical Mono Preservation (Released)

Does this track sync with the USA remastered Blu-ray release?

Dude, just find the "re-graded re-scored" edit on the 'spleen. It's the new blu-ray with the proper color timing AND it gives you the choice between the original mono and the 5.1. No need to do the work yourself. I got that sucker about a month ago and I've already watched it like 5 times. It's glorious.

Help Wanted: 'An American Tail' (1986) Blu Ray (Original Theatrical Audio Restoration) (* unfinished project *)

Over on the blu-ray.com thread I think someone or someones pointed out that the adults dubbing WAS the original audio before the child actors were brought in. Guess they were placeholders until they hired some children to do the lines. Why they would bring them back though is anyone's guess.

ALIEN: Extended Cut (BD50) (* unfinished project *)

Next question is the infamous "cocoon" scene. I've seen fan edits that've put the scene in before AND after Ripley turns on the self destruct switches. Not sure who said this, but I agree with their analysis: "The scene has no clear starting point. Place the scene before hitting the switch and you lose the suspense of her running from the Alien and getting the final act in motion (scene drags on too long). Place it during the self destruct countdown, and you lose continuity with the countdown (again, scene drags on too long)."

Not an exact quote but you get what they mean. I think they also said that Ridley Scott never really established where this scene would fit into the narrative when he shot it. Probably the reason it got the axe. So the big question now is, where will the scene go in your edit?

Upscaling Robocop Criterion (Released)

Ugh, at this point for me it's not even about the "proper" color timing, it's about which is the most satisfying to look at. And by that I mean for the movies I grew up with it's whichever release looks and sounds the closest to how it looked and sounded when I was a kid. In this case, the the new 4k looks leaps and bounds better than the 2007 BD just from color timing alone.

Ah.  I'm with you for certain films, but I've always liked the look of Minority Report. Fits perfectly with that vision of the future. Bleak and washed out.

Certain films are fine. The Matrix, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Terminator 1 and 2, all perfectly fine. However, when every other director is doing it, it loses all it's meaning, and just comes off as extremely cheap. My main problem isn't with modern movies doing it, it's with the Hollywood re-visioning the old films and re-grading the blu-rays so that they look like modern movies.

I recently read an article that said that 70% of the silent movies are lost forever. I fear in another 30-50 years we'll be seeing another article saying that the original prints and negatives of old films are gone and we're stuck with every color movie from the 50s to the present all looking teal.

Waitaminute, the blu-ray of minority report removed the color push and goes for a more natural color palette? This shocks me because I am so used to the opposite with old movies on blu-ray at this point.

Yeah, for once, they did just the opposite, and made the color timing more natural for the blu-ray. That's a switch, huh? Personally, this is how I prefer it - I always prefer natural skin tones and colors. I hate when director's add all kinds of crazy color tints to films. So even though I'm not too interested in this particular project, I will say that as usual the colormatch work being done here is amazing! In this case I prefer the blu-ray colors though.

Why? Not trying to be mean, just curious. The bleach bypass and unnatural colors make the film look unique and noir like. They help establish the tone of the film (and the bluray colors are not even close to natural, just different.) Lots of films, even old ones, use color grading extensively.

I understand and completely agree. However, terms like "setting a tone" and more importantly, "Unique" are thrown out the window when EVERY....MOVIE....LOOKS....THE SAME.

One suggestion for the first TERMINATOR is to boost/enhance the bass elements.

Haha. I remember as a kid my friends and I would laugh at the part when the Terminator explodes cuz there was like no bass in the explosion sound. We'd turn up the bass on the receiver to the max and turn the treble down to minimumto try and help it....or turn the bass off completely and turn the treble up to the max just to hear what it sounds like lol.

No kidding. It's almost as if someone accidentally turned off the filters layer.

Can I find out who his someone is? I'd like to thank them personally, lol.

I'd also like to hire them to re-restore every blu-ray of every movie that's been re-color timed and give them back their original color.

Don't bother watching all 7 and a half minutes (unless you like this sort of commentary) but this guy points out the teal-orange contrast obsession, but only in reference to movie posters, not the entire films' color timing.

I don't know what it is about the blu-ray era that made previously respected directors go back and change their most popular works. There are way too many examples. Maybe they don't think people will buy the same movies again unless they look different? Different being new in the eyes of mainstream consumers?

I know some people are gonna think I'm overdoing it, but I'm gonna say it anyway. To me, directors going back and changing and "fixing" their movies when new technology is available is the equivalent of if all artists could come back to life and re-do their most famous works. Paintings, statues, books, music, and movies. Like if we brought them all back to life every 100 years or so and they went and altered their works.

And if that's too much of a stretch since said directors are still alive when they modify their films, then how about this: Directors altering their films with new technology is the equivalent of if the famous artists went back and re-did their work every 5-10 years while they were still alive.

To me, movies are art the same way the Mona Lisa is. They are our markers of the advancements of human history, as well as markers for what we thought of things as a species at that point in time. But letting future changes alter that, we alter history. And that's wrong.

To me, the racist story writing of the black centaur in Disney's fantasia being removed in order to not offend anyone is the equivalent of removing slavery from the history books.

However, because this is only movies we're talking about and not a period in time where people were treated lower than animals, I say if the directors wanna change their work that's fine. But for all that is good and holy, please give the consumer the OPTION to CHOOSE. Case in point: Would anyone REALLY hate the SW specials editions if their original counterparts were there alongside them?

Oh boy. I am beyond confused at this point. More than 1 person or persons working on T1 and T2 here on this site, someone already released another edit of T1 on tehparadox. Of which he has a few versions as well, and who knows what's going on at fanedit.org.

Ok look, all I want it the best blu-ray version of T1 available with the proper color timing and the original mono mix. What is, or will be the best edit to get these things? Thanks!!

Saw T2 in theaters a few years ago in downtown NYC (forget the name of the theater, but it's one of those theaters that plays old movies every now and then along with new movies and indie/art movies). The print was definitely film, as there was a lot of dirt, and of course the cigarette burns. The color of the film still had the blue color timing that we're all familiar with for this film.

Movies with wrong color grading *** UPDATED ***
Time

As one of the first movies I can remember seeing in theaters as a child, as well as being one of my favorite comic book movies ever, I can say that I watched this movie enough on vhs to know that you can juuuuuuuuust slightly make out Jack's face if you focus hard enough. Or at least you could on my old tube tv with whichever vhs release I had (It was the old one with the diet coke ad and the WB catalog ad with Bugs and Daffy before the start of the movie).

'The Wild Life' - has anyone done a preservation; HD? (Released)
Time

Just posted tonight!!! Another Eddie Van Halen track from The Wild Life. "All Fired Up" is played during the house party scene towards the end of the film. This is another demo that would eventually become "A.F.U Naturally Wired" on the OU812 album 4 years later.

Here's to hoping the demo for "Right Now" is next!!

'The Wild Life' - has anyone done a preservation; HD? (Released)
Time

I caught a great HD presentation of this movie on cable a few years ago at like 2 in the morning, but didn't record it. I do remember, however, taking notes of the songs differences.

Basically put, when you see bad vhs/laserdisc copies of the movie (usually on youtube or a torrent), most of the music is score music written and performed by Eddie Van Halen. I thought he did the original music and his music was later replaced because Eddie never signed off on it in regards to distribution releases. However, someone told me that the "alternate" music is the ORIGINAL music, and the Van Halen stuff was added later for vhs/laserdisc release. I can't confirm this though, only one person told me this. But FWIW, it does make sense that the Van Halen score was done 2nd, as it's mostly demo versions of songs they made later with Sammy Hagar.

As a huge Van Halen fan, I think you can all guess which score I prefer ;)

Oh and for those interested, most of those score pieces Eddie wrote are now available on youtube. The full pieces even show parts of the score that wasn't used in the film. I'd post the links the proper way, but the insert/edit link button isn't working for me for some reason.

The song when the guys are cruisin' the blvd.

The song when the cop investigates the explosion at the school (Demo version of "Good Enough")

The end credits music. Basically a b-side instrumental version of "Jump".

The piece that was used in Back to the Future:

And of course, the track that Eddie recently re-used (or "properly finished" if you prefer to use that terminology) for the new VH album:

They haven't released ALL the pieces used in the film yet. There's still the demo versions of "Mine, All Mine", "Right Now", and "Naturally Wired". Hopefully they'll release them to someday.
