Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion
Time
As to speeding it up, I don't think it would cause as much of a problem - except to really anal people with perfect pitch. (j/k!)

Ha! Perfect pitch is a blessing and a curse. To be honest, only about 1 in a few thousand people have this, and of these, they wouldn't know it unless they had musical training. So people like me are far and in between!

For everyone else, it's probably unnoticeable.

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion

I just tried doing that really quickly (with Sound Forge and an Audio HQ filter) and it actually isn't that bad at all. It was a little tinny, but I think that's because of the process I was using. It's actually not bad, though.

I think that they should use a better version of that process with PAL. I think it'd make more people happy because it's staying more true to the original pitches of music and voices.

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion
Time
I don't know about the anamorphic debate, but the reason I will always watch the trilogy in NTSC is not necessarily because I live in America. I have a PAL copy of the widescreen Star Wars as well. I cannot stand PAL because the sound is sped up along with the video. This is a problem if you were born with something called "perfect pitch" like I was. It means that you automically identify pitch names. So I am immensely distracted by the Star Wars theme playing in B Major rather than B flat Major. It's not so much the voices, but every time a musical cue comes in, I'm busy noticing that it's not in the original key. I can't help it, and it throws the whole thing off for me.

Not many people have my problem (so I don't know how many people know what I'm talking about), but I just wanted to state my personal situation. I would much rather have a motion-judder with the correct running time and the correct audio track

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion

It's enough to make you break down in tears. When did Lucas completely lose his mind? Maybe it happened slowly after he divorced his wife. He said something like, "The other version is on VHS and laserdisc, if anybody wants it." Is he nuts? Has he ever gone to this site? VHS and laserdisc are really crummy representations of cinema changing movies. I just can't believe it.

On a happier note, if someone were to purchase 16mm prints of the original trilogy, actually take it to a film lab and digitally restore it, and then release it to us in anamorphic widescreen on a DVD, that would be the neatest thing.

One of us ought to do that.

The 2 Ewok Films - '<strong>Caravan Of Courage</strong>' (aka 'The Ewok Adventure'), &amp; '<strong>Battle For Endor</strong>'
Time
This confusion (Ewok Adventure vs. Caravan of Courage) stems from the fact that there were two versions of this film. Almost identical, the only difference was the opening credits. The original TV version said "The Ewok Adventure" in the credits, and the European theatrical version said "Caravan of Courage." When the recent DVD was released, for some reason they decided to use the "Caravan of Courage" credits, in full screen ratio.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the case. The old "Ewok Adventure" credits can be found on old VHS tapes and LD's.

Empire Of Dreams 2

OK. Here are my favorite ideas so far:

1. Han Solo isn’t dead, but he’s dying as the movie progresses. The carbonization slowly broke his system down over time. In a softly lit scene in some dark room with Leia (on a bed maybe), Solo admits that he loves her. Han goes on to warn the princess not to get attached to him, for he’s as good as dead now. They kiss passionately, winding up the love story. Leia looks prettier than she did in the real movie (like in Empire). I don’t know what caused the difference in ROTJ. Hairstyles maybe? Anyway, later on, even in his really bad condition, he fights in the battle because the Rebels are outnumbered and he doesn’t want anything to happen to Leia. He throws himself in the line of fire to save Leia’s life (probably during the Battle of Endor) and is killed by the Empire. But everyone has a really high opinion of him at that point.
2. Jabba the Hutt is more threatening; more of a deadly menace than he was. He doesn’t kill Solo, but there should be some kind of equivalent to make people despise him.
3. Luke goes bananas while rescuing Han from Jabba the Hutt; he acts like a Sith, choking people and being violent. Later, before Yoda dies, he admonishes Luke and warns him, saying that he felt a tremor in the force when he killed so-and-so (like he did when Anakin sliced up the Tusken Raiders). He makes a point of emphasizing that Luke is the last hope-period. Leia is not his sister.
4. Boba Fett doesn’t die in the Sarlacc’s belly. It was a poorly done scene and it would make lots of fans happy.
5. The Ewoks are Wookies and they don’t act foolishly; they act like warriors.
6. Endor is definitely a lot better protected.
7. Luke turns to the dark side after nearly killing Vader. He stops after cutting Vader’s arm, and then he turns to the Emperor and pledges his alleigance to him. He then proceeds to do a bunch of really bad stuff. The Emperor is derogatory towards Vader (who needs him, especially since he’s wounded and the Emperor has Luke). Vader throws the Emperor out single-handedly and then Luke, in tears, turns back to the good side after realizing all the damage he has done. He feels responsible for the death of Vader (which he should). It’s kind of like in The Return of the King. After that huge journey to Mordor, he winds up succumbing to the power of the Ring and Sam winds up saving him. It’s the same in this except Luke’s savior is Darth Vader, once a being of pure evil. Think of the Dark Side like a hypnotic drug that Luke falls prey to. Then, Luke does something really good to redeem himself. Suggestions?
8. I like the idea of all the old friends returning to the places that they came from, but best of all is Luke returning to Tatooine to bury his father: wiser, sadder, and with a greater understanding of his weaknesses and of the galaxy in general. It really would make the circle complete and finish the saga brilliantly. Leia is not involved in this (he does this ritual alone) but viewers are free to imagine that Luke and Leia marry.

I don’t think Lando should die anymore because there are already several major deaths in this movie.

A lot of details would need to be worked out, but I think this is a great (albeit darker) start to a better conclusion to the saga. Comments or additions?

Yeah, the Luke/Leia brother and sister thing kind of ruined part of the original two movies, in a way. I just showed the original version of The Empire Strikes Back to some friends on a projector, and resounding "eewww"'s echoed through the room when Leia kissed Luke. It wasn't disgusting before, but now it is. But Lucas was forced to do it because Han survived through the movie and he didn't want one guy to be disappointed. See, if Han was dead, Luke could marry Leia and there wouldn't be a problem.

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion

I'm not terribly experienced with this, but I'd imagine that the success of anamorphic over letterbox (when using LD as a source) would depend heavily on filters, programs, techincal knowledge of what you're doing, etc. Because honestly, the difference isn't that big. I agree completely when it is said that anamorphic usually looks better on a widescreen TV because the computer has done the hard work (rather than the decoder). You can get some nasty stuff when you merely press the zoom button on a letterboxed DVD (with a widescreen monitor).

I'd probably go anamorphic, but I'd need to do a lot of reading to get up on all of this. All of you have done the hard work already!

The One Good Thing about the S.E.'s
Time
Well of course, Chaltab! We wouldn't use it to go back in time to witness wars, great discoveries, Biblical events, famous people, or to correct mistakes; we could use it to find out what color the explosion of the Blockade Runner in the third shot of Star Wars was in the original release! Why didn't people think of that?

Seriously, it may sound nitpicky, but I'm just unexplicably interested in this particular original shot for restoring the original SW, for one reason or another. I guess it's just irratated me ever since I noticed the big color difference.

And I'm glad you feel special, Darth Chaltab

You're right; killing him off at the beginning would kind of leave Leia hanging.

But what do you think of the other idea? I think Luke should have clearly turned to the dark side for a short period and didn't stop after wounding Vader. There's an undescribable tension and horror you get when the hero does something bad. I think it would've been a great plot twist for the culmination of the saga; the other way is too predictable.

The 2 Ewok Films - '<strong>Caravan Of Courage</strong>' (aka 'The Ewok Adventure'), &amp; '<strong>Battle For Endor</strong>'

I wanted to expand on my previous statement. Not only did George Lucas like the Ewok movies and released them multiple times, he actually wrote the story and produced them. So he was actually more involved with the Ewok movies than with The Empire Strikes Back!

I thought that that was kind of a funny thought.
