What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)

Unfortunately this always feels like these guys need to justify the existence and importance of their gig. Not that they don't care or aren't talented, but man. Last year when they did the press for the bluray, at home theater forum, Matthew Wood went on about how harsh and hissy the 77 movie sounded, it was almost verbatim the way they talked about SUPERMAN years earlier, basically if a modern audience heard the old mix your ears would melt, and TERMINATOR is about to come out with the same issue.
Let's run with the premise though. A mono soundmix was included with the special edition Jaws DVD. There is a slightly harsh quality to the soundmix and I swear to hear some Rice Krispies in the opening credits. But there's an authenticity to it that I don't think is replicated in the ultra deluxe badass remix. It's a good mix, don't get me wrong, but the mono version captures my attention everytime. I realize people have to work for a living but -- apart from conflicting with other SE changes -- what do these sound designers think is so horrible about including the original soundtrack? Surely if you're creating a superior product, you needn't fear the comparison, right Mr. Wood?

The difference is that in the magnetic soundtrack era, every mix was a performance.  People like Ben Burtt and other techs would sit at the mixing board and rehearse a scene over and over until they got everything right, and then they would do a take.  This would be done for sound effects repeatedly, and also music and dialogue.  There there would be more rehearsals when they mixed everything together, then they would do a take and correct anything that didn't seem to work, then do another take, etc.

That's not the case anymore when they do modern surround remixes.  That authenticity you refer to may be just the excitement and energy created by having a track recorded live.  That is my theory, anyway!

Hi guys. I wished that I had known to do multiple takes when i was recording in the summer because it took 2 straight weeks to record every single piece of dialogue with only 1 take. Unfortunately, I will be returning to school next week and will not have much free time to spend on recording. With all the stresses of school and work, I really could not commit as much time as I could in the summer. I really wanted to see progress as soon as possible, but I sadly don't have the time. It may take months to record new takes ...

Hey Henry,

That is my fault entirely for not specifying that.  I have also lost my old george lucas email so I apologize for any messages you may have sent me.  Good luck with school- do you think you might have time to come back to this next summer?

Thanks for the encouragement.  I think it is bound to be done eventually.

For this new dubbed version, I actually thought about maybe buying a 35mm print of AOTC and then hacking that up with a flat-bed and convert all the ADR to tape and actually make a legitimate new print with a new soundtrack done in the magnetic realm. Then I realized that would be far too costly for what it is (a re-edit of somebody else's movie that is already in the legal grey area, particularly now that Disney owns Star Wars).  Would Cinelab or the other one in Georgia even MAKE a print of something made out of copyrighted material?  I don't know..

Hey Ben,

There just isn't enough to work with yet (and again that is my fault for not following up last year).  Sometimes the lines synched but sometimes they didn't.  When there is only one take for each line, it is hard to change the reading or speed on a line.  Usually several different takes of each line is best so that you can mix and match using different takes and get the best end result not only with synch, but for performance.

Hello to everyone, I am sorry for disappearing again.  I am out of school now and I am currently trying to find investors for a real 35mm movie, rather than just re-editing.

The long and the short with the recent dubs is that the voice is perfect, but I need more takes to work with.  There was only one take of each line which made sound synch nigh impossible, not to mention performance.  I will need at least 5 takes of each line.

I need to get in touch with Henry again because I've lost the email I was previously communicating with- I apologize for being so badly in touch.

If I ultimately can't finish this for good, I will probably upload the whole thing to vimeo in DVD quality and PM people the password, and maybe someone else can take the reigns or find inspiration for their own edits.

But this has gone on so long that I would really like to finish it.  So I need to get more dialogue recorded, and then I can continue....

When/Why did you become an OT purist?
Time

I became a purist very early on, around 2001.  I grew up watching and re-watching the THX original versions in full-screen, and I was concerned because I had read that George Lucas would never release the original versions again and I wanted to get a widescreen version on laserdisc before they became impossible to find.  I thought that widescreen VHS would be OK too, as long as I could digitize them.

I found a VHS copy of the widescreen Faces set from a store that posted their catalog and new acquisitions online (I don't remember what the name was).  It was about $33 for the entire set in new condition (some shrink wrap was missing but that was it).

But I wanted more- I knew the laserdisc versions would be better quality.  I was on prillaman's site a lot, reading about the DVD bootlegs and etc.  They all looked good for different reasons (TR47 had the uncompressed soundtrack, Dr. Gonzo was anamorphic, another version had isolated score).

In 2005 I found this site.

I actually don't think I've ever seen the Special Edition trilogy all the way through, back to back (97, 04, or the new blu-rays).  It was obviously inferior and it ruined the pacing.

^What Captainsolo said! I feel as if the Moore Bond movies struggled to remain relevant by picking up on recent trends in pop culture and trying to utilize them; while Moonraker is the most blatant example, you can see it a little in each. While Moore as Bond has a bit of a bumbling aspect to him (the first time I saw L&LD I asked myself why Bond kept ... losing,) his portrayal is certainly fun. He has a suaveness that I'm not even sure Connery ever pulled off. It always made sense why he got the girl. I love him for different reasons than other actors; in fact, the problem I have with picking a favorite is that in my opinion there never WAS a bad Bond actor. Just bad movies that went along with him.

I actually really love Moonraker and I thought Roger Moore was a worthy follow-up to Sean Connery.  The strong 70s feel of the Moore movies adds to the enjoyment for me because I love that period of filmmaking.

Listen to that melancholy, admittedly dated opening song.  Beautiful...

Skyfall (2012)

My initial reaction:

Holy shit.  That was not an action movie.  That was a movie warning its audience that they were going to go to hell.

*SPOILERS*

Everything about it pointed that way.  Every time Bond was about to have a sex scene with a girl, the scene before said: "Think on your sins."

They said "Sometimes the best way is the old fashioned way."

"What's your hobby?"  "Resurrection," says Bond.

"Like most great ladies, she has her secrets."

Bond gets wounded in the chest, slits it with a knife and blood comes out.

"I look at the world...and it frightens me."

And finally, the whole scene at the end with the flames and the orange backdrop and etc.- that was HELL.  Bond ran and ran, but he couldn't escape.

Then they said something like "It's never too late to turn back."

And then the villain (who was a demon), said "You're hurt!  Let's end it together" and aims the gun at both of their heads.  But it doesn't work- Bond comes in to save the day.  The villain screams and collapses on the floor and Bond holds the wounded person- in a CHURCH.

Edit: They put crosses in the opening credits.

*END SPOILERS*

Seriously, I am amazed this movie got made.

I thought it was excellent, by the way.  Just not what I was expecting at all.  I have not seen other peoples' reactions but I will be curious if they picked up on this as well.  The people who wrote/directed this were very, very clever.

Totally unlike any other Bond film.

I'm so glad to hear from you Trooperman! I can understand these past few months being busy times with work and family problems myself; all I was looking for was reassurance that the project hadn't died. There is no need to rush, as always the more work put in puts out a better product.

I am just thrilled that we were able to locate you and bring you to OT.com; your voice work is going to make massive improvements possible in both Episode 2 and 3 for lots of future versions.

Honestly, the lack of an good, new Anakin actor has plagued this project since 2005.  Now that you're here, when I am actually able to sit down and start finishing this again, I see it going much faster and the result being much more credible that it had ever been before with my voice.

Good to see ya back, T-man. Looking forward to more SW, just hope it doesn't cause our little group to dig deeper underground.

Good to see you too:)  And Erik, and MTHaslett, and everybody.  I can't believe you guys are still around considering how slowly this has been going.

As for Episode VII, if Hamill, Ford, and Fischer are returning, they're all in need of some serious facelifts (or at least diets).

Haha, I agree. I think Mark Hamill needs a beard, Carrie Fisher needs to go on a huge diet, and Harrison Ford needs to remove his left earring;)  But with George Lucas doing the story but not the screenplay or directing, I hope that they'll turn out well.  I'll be there at midnight in May of 2015, that's for sure.

I am still here.  *hangs head in shame at lack of progress*

I have not checked my SW email in a few months; I am sorry for not responding, but glad to see Henry is still around and not too peeved with me. He has done an AWESOME job on this and I hope once we finish these tracks, it will become the new go-to for future fan editors.

There is no contract, haha; the idea was always that anyone could freely take material from anything I have done, just like I have taken ideas from other people.

I have been very busy with a combination of a difficult family issue and my final semester of school (plan to graduate in Dec. of this year if all goes well).

I still have all of the project files on a couple of hard drives though.  Even if I am not able to finish this to technical standard, I can still send the drives to someone who can.

I am still floored by this Episode 7, 8, and 9 news.  If they look like they will be good, that only makes it more imperative that we fix up the prequels as best we can (esp. since Disney may start cracking down on this sort of thing).
