Info Wanted: Shelagh Fraser's voice in a lost SW mix (Aunt Beru)
Time

It is well known that the mono mix, stereo mix, and the 6-track mixes of the original Star Wars each contain different takes of Beru’s dialogue. (Listen to the SE mix for 6-track differences. There are some small differences from the 1993 THX and the 1986). Some people think that a different actress entirely dubbed for the mono mix, but after listening to it many times, it seems to me that it makes more sense that the same actress did it; they just read it in a completely different manner.

Here’s a completely different question, though; I have info stating that the original “unfinished” mix (of which there were only 9 copies) DID contain Fraser’s original voice performance, before she was dubbed, with a thick British accent. Do any of you know any more about this?

New rumor - Hayden to dub over James Earl Jones for future SW DVDS!
Time
Quote

For those of us who loved the OT and want to keep it sacred, but would also like to see a version of the Star Wars saga that is completely integrated with all six episodes, I think that a process like that would be ideal to keep you connected with the character of Anakin.

Perhaps when my edit of Ep. II (and someday Ep. III) comes out, you'll give that a try. Since Anakin is being redubbed, the new voice is closer to JEJ, and every attempt will be made to read the lines with the types of inflections that JEJ used.

Sorry, Hayden! When I'm finished, Hayden's whiny voice will not be heard in ANY movie in the saga.

Thanks.

-Rebel Scumb also inserted the music from RotJ when Luke first gets his lightsaber when the Jedi reveal themselves in the arena. I think that might really enhance the scene.

I know I'm going to replace that weird music originally present; it could very well be that cue.

-And thinking about the lightsaber duel, maybe you could work it where Dooku force pushes Anakin across the room at the beginning? Just a thought, because I like Anakin's reckless charging at Dooku and paying *some* price for it.

Good idea- but I'm not sure how to make it work with available footage.

And sorry I'm not able to help in any practical way, but I'll always be around as a creative consultant!

Great!

I've been thinking and experimenting with Yoda vs. Dooku, and I have found that it is possible that the confrontation might be powerful enough without any lightning or lightsabers- with the proper music. The current "music" is just a lot of punctuated blasts setting up for something that isn't going to happen. So I experimented and used the triumphant cue with Yoda's theme way back from TESB, when Yoda levitates Luke's ship from the X-Wing. And I was really surprised.

Once I had it synchronized well, it made the scene very powerful and dramatic, and it worked very well without the lightning. It's amazing how the music can change a small scene used to set up the next two into a very powerful climax, which it is. I'm also considering removing Yoda's earlier line, "Bring me a ship." That way, there is no anticipation for a big fight with Yoda, and when Yoda walks in to save the Jedi, it comes as a complete surprise, and a triumphant moment.

I'm very, very pleased with my current cut of that scene, now.

What is Rebel Scumb?

A forum member who created a "lost" edit of Episode II. A detailed list of the changes still remains, however.

Wait- I know what Lucas needs!
Time
I think there's some serious truth to this, though. He's changing his classic films from the 70's and early 80's because for some reason he's trying to convince himself that his divorced life is better than his old life used to be (subconsciously), and therefore the films he made back in the "flawed" part of his life all need to be changed. I know his wife helped edit the original SW; maybe he wants to have the "final say" or "finish it off" so as to make him forget.

In my opinion, that's why George Lucas edited the Star Wars Trilogy (and THX-1338), because it's so ingrained in his mind that since his life was flawed during that period, so was everything he did, including his films, and to be happy about his work, he had to revisit it during his "happier" period.

I don't believe a fetus is a baby

Cute. So when does it magically become a baby? At what point do you feel guilty of this bloodshed?

Quote

I don't believe it's a conscious human life

Explain the significance of this. It is human life. Deep down, you know it's human life. All these excuses to justify killing out of convenience.

Quote

I’ve said what I wanted to say here … y’all think abortion is murder. I don’t.

Let me spell it out for you.

1. Fetus is alive
2. If fetus has 47 chromosomes, fetus is human. This means human life. Not plant life, not reptile life...human life.
2. Fetus has done nothing wrong by existing; therefore fetus is innocent.
3. Abortion- aborts fetus. Ends fetus' life. Therefore kills fetus because it used to be alive.
4. Since fetus=innocent human life and abortion=end of innocent human life, abortion= murder.

So explain to us why abortion isn't murder? Give us some info. Is it because

1. The fetus isn't human; it's a purple monster
2. I don't like the sound of that word
3. It was the fetus' fault I had sex
4. My pet peacock told me so

Thanks, Rikter!

I'm really trying not to boast about this a lot (until I'm finished), but another plus with this project is that it will probably be the first one to be completed after seeing all 6 films in context (and therefore seeing what's important, what will come back later on). I can also possibly take advantage of the Revenge of the Sith soundtrack as well in this film, if warranted.

Girl Problem
Time
That's one good looking gal you have there!

I have two bits of advice:

1. SMILE
2. Make eye contact

Eye contact is everything! When you look into her eyes, you display confidence and also the fact that you are interested. Look away, or look at the floor, and you've made a big mistake.

SMILE! I think perhaps you're taking this too seriously and are acting stiff and nervous because of it. Smiling lets her know that you could be fun to be with, and not boring. Girls don't like boring guys. I know firsthand about that.

Walk with your back straight, slowly but calmly. Smile, look her in the eyes, demonstrate interest in her, and display the utmost confidence; otherwise, she'll think you're just a "kid" and move on to other things (which she might do anyway).

But have hope; you could make some serious headway in two months if you do it right. And from what you say it sounds like she does like you for one reason or another, so it'll be a little easier than starting off cold.

Good luck!

So, are all the Stormtroopers from IV-VI clones?..
Time
Forgive me if I'm overlooking something basic, but here's another PT plot hole that irritates me.

Why does Owen Lars act like he's never seen or heard of a droid named C-3PO in the original Star Wars, when in AOTC, C-3PO is actually working on his moisturizer farm? You can explain away 3PO's lack of memory by a memory wipe in Episode III, but what about Owen Lars? Does he have Alzeimhers maybe?

Nor would I. I'm a jazz fan as well; I might just pick that disc up and listen to all of the songs to see which one would fit best into the nightclub.

Even though it's a different recording, I don't neccessarily want to use the same popular song in more than one movie. At this point, though, I'm just listening to a lot of different stuff and considering some other SW stuff. But I do think I'm going to get a hold of that CD; I've heard of it before.

Anybody else who attempts an edit of Episode II after this will be hard-pressed to surpass yours I think, or at least come up with a cool title.

Thanks! Of course, they could just use mine as a template before improving it even more!

Now, I'm thinking that this is going to be the crawl:

Episode II
SHADOW OF THE DARK SIDE

Ten years after the election of Palpatine, unrest pervades the Galactic Senate. Several thousand systems intend to secede from the Republic.

These separatist traitors, under the leadership of the mysterious Count Dooku, have made it especially difficult for the limited number of Jedi Knights to maintain peace and order in the galaxy.

Pursued by ruthless assassins, Senator Amidala returns to Coruscant to vote on the critical issue of creating an ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC to support the overwhelmed Jedi....

And that page from Mr. Freeman has given me some ideas on a couple scenes, the 2nd scene from the beginning, in particular:

Rebel Scumb's version was:

Ki adi Mundi: He's a political idealist, not a murderer.
Mace: You know count dooku was once a jedi, he couldn't assassionate anyone, its not in his character.
Cut to close up of Mace: We're keepers of the peace, not soldiers.
Yoda looks at him then turns to the Palpy's desk as a hologram of a rodian appears.

My version plays out like this:

Ki adi Mundi: He’s a political idealist, not a murderer.
Mace: You know that Count Dooku was once a Jedi. He couldn’t assassinate anyone. It’s not in his character. Close-up. But if they do break away…

Palpatine: My negotiations will not fail.

Mace: If they do, you must realize we’re keepers of the peace, not soldiers. There aren’t enough Jedi to protect the republic.

Palpatine: Master Yoda, do you think it will really come to war?

Yoda: The dark side clouds everything. Impossible to see…the future is.

Also, the scene where Mace shows up at the arena. In Rebel Scumb's version...

Dooku: Master windu how pleasant of you to join us.
Mace: This party's over.
(but the other jedi do not appear)
Dooku: Brave, but foolish my old jedi friend, You're impossibly out numbered.
Mace: I don't think so!
Now the jedi army appears for a much better pay off, the music has also been redubbed, it is the triumphant music from when Luke first ignites his saber on the sail barge in RotJ.
Dooku: We'll see.

My version...

Dooku: Master Windu, how pleasant of you to join us. Pause. Cut away to Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme looking up hopefully. But you’re impossibly outnumbered.
Windu: I don’t think so.
Jedi ignite lightsabers. No reaction shot from Obi-Wan, Anakin, etc.
Dooku: We’ll see.

Also, I'm considering this exchange for my radically changed "forbidden kiss" scene:

Padme: We would swim to that island every day. I love the water.
Padme is chattering, Anakin’s bored to death. He wants to talk about other things.
Anakin: Padme…I love you. (in place of “I don’t like sand”)
Padme looks at Anakin.
Anakin: I’ve loved you ever since I first saw you, ten years ago. I was afraid to tell you before. But it’s true. (instead of “and smooth.”)

Padme: I can’t. Pause. It’s not possible…
Anakin: Why not?
Padme: That was forbidden for a Jedi.
Anakin: They wouldn’t have to know.
Padme: We’d be living a lie. I couldn’t do that. Could you, Anakin? Could you live like that?
Anakin: I’m sorry, Padme. You’re right. It would destroy us.

I am still very much rewriting this and trying to make it flow more smoothly, but that's a start. I have also deleted the scene with the floating pair (originally directly before the kiss scene), because I realized Padme is wearing different outfits in the two scenes. The scene was never that good to begin with, anyhow.

Thanks for all your support! I'm very excited that this could be becoming a collaborative project, with a few different people involved doing things I'm not capable of on my own.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
I’d love to talk about music. That’s one thing I’m quite good at. I’ve composed a couple Bach-style Inventions (in Baroque style), as well as some other stuff, and I’ve arranged some music as well. Piano’s my main instrument, but I also play violin, euphonium, tuba, organ, and accordion. And I even play the radio.

So the good news is: I’m going to record a couple all-new music cues which will wind up in my edit. The biggest is a tuba cue I have written, which takes the 7-note motif recurring throughout the film, and develops it a bit. So I’ve written it, I’m going to record it, and it will go in the arena scene, when Count Dooku is first seen in that scene. I think that marks the first time that this has been done in a fan edit.

The Death Star motif during the appropriate discussion in the war room is a go.

So is the Imperial March when Obi-Wan surveys the clones.

Lapti-Nek, though, I’m not going to use because:

1. I don’t like the song
2. I don’t want to repeat material from ROTJ, because I’m making my edit specifically to be compatible with the OT.

I also don’t want really bouncy, light music in the nightclub; I want it to be reminiscent of Episode IV, but in the opposite style. Kind of dark and moody, slow swing music. I’m considering using Les Brown’s recording of “Moonlight in Vermont” for this.

However, there’s some kind of tense music by John Williams for a short period before Obi-Wan severs Zam’s limb, and I want that to remain intact, so as not to lose this tension. So, much to my surprise, there’s a point in the nightclub when several of the patrons clap (for no reason). Perfect! I’ll end the song a couple seconds before; therefore, they’re clapping because the song has finished! Then, enter dramatic music (the band is taking a temporary break).

Another option (but probably not one I’ll follow up on) is to record a nightclub-style version of “Across the Stars” on accordion, and put that in, as if it’s a popular song at the time. There are many, many options.

Wow, that sounds really impressive. Do you know of any way to acquire this edit?

Traitor! My edit will be the only one anyone will ever need after it comes out!

No, seriously, if you were to obtain it, the quality wouldn't be so hot (coming from a VCD).

I also get a kick out the fact that this editor claims to have done all of that in 3 days. 3 days! So I don't know how choppy the editing is, considering the short time frame.

But it's great that I now have his game plan, so that I can take advantage of it along with MagnoliaFan's.

Info Wanted: Did i get the right original preservation DVD's? (from ebay)

any help would be appreciated.

Help: There are people here that would either give you excellent DVD's of the original trilogy for free, or else charge you very little for them. There are many different ones to choose from, all with different options, like: anamorphic widescreen, isolated score, recreation of original crawl, 1993 or 1986 version of sound mix, PCM or Dolby...there's lots to choose from.

But getting this stuff on Ebay is dangerous: you don't know what you're getting, and you're probably paying more than you have to.

Star Wars opening scrolls in 3d Studio Max
Time
Hi, guys. I was just wondering if anyone could provide help or point me into a direction where I can find a dummy-proof tutorial on how to create a Star Wars opening crawl (with correct formatting, font, color, etc.) for 3d Studio Max. I was very hopeful when I came across this: Opening Crawl, but the link to the tutorial is broken.

Just wondering if anyone can help me out or if anyone knows where I can find this info, to point me in the right direction. I'm working on a re-edit of Episode II and I need to redo the opening crawl, but I don't use this program very often and I haven't got Adobe AfterEffects.

Bought it on EBay

Probably not a good idea to begin with.

Bought it on EBay and it stated that it was the ORIGINAL theatrical release.........

There are many definitions of that. The TRUE theatrical version does not exist in widescreen, although it has been recreated by EditDroid. But just because it has the "Episode IV" title doesn't mean it's the SE. What you probably have is the 1993 remastering of the 1981 rerelease. And the only visual difference between this version and the original release is the opening crawl.

Thanks, Mr. Freeman! I had already done a lot of that, but that gave me lots of good ideas I had never thought of before. It is especially useful beginning the scene with the council as they are talking about Dooku; that way, Padme doesn't have to come up with a suspicious statement out of the blue, just to introduce the character. Very good stuff.

As for the crawl matching the line in the movie, I realize that that is somewhat odd. How about SHADOW OF THE DARK SIDE?

Jeten San Hett, perhaps if you can't find a server, you could split it up into several .rar files, and email each piece to me separately? But before that happens, I just want to finalize the title and the crawl.
