Great- thanks. So most questions are answered:

So all of the theatrical versions of all films in the saga sported subtitles in ITC Franklin Gothic Demi Bold.

Actually, I believe that on disc 2 of AOTC (when the deleted scenes are being discussed), there are clips of the original version of AOTC- with the original subtitles. I'll have to check.

What font was used for the subtitles in later VHS and laserdisc releases of the SW trilogy?

AlternateGotNo3D and Impact come pretty close, but no exact match.

So I only have a few remaining questions:

1. What fonts were used for the ending credits of the SW movies? Were the classic trilogy end credit fonts different from the prequels?

2. What font was used for the original version of "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away" (not prequels, because it was done incorrectly)

3. Do all subtitles in the saga fade in and fade out as they do in the prequels? How long is the fade-in and fade-out?

Thanks for your help!

Hold on- if you really want to nitpick, if they released an "SE" of SW (original version with the '85 mix, say) and the original versions of Empire and Jedi, then they could still release it without fear that they were breaking their word. It could be the last time the original TRILOGY was released on video, but not necessarily the sequels. Not to mention they lied to begin with because SW was revised in that set.

Help Wanted: a bitmap of the original green 'Lucasfilm Limited' logo?

You guys are great-thanks!

So the consensus is that the font does not actually exist, but that Franklin Gothic Demi Bold is a very close match and is a good starting point. When you say Franklin Gothic Demi Bold, do you mean Franklin Gothic Demi (on the bold setting), or is it a completely different font? Either way, can it be download from the net, do you think? (or must it be purchased?)

Here's my first stab at cleaning up the logo a bit:

http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/8773/lucasfilmlimitedfixeda8cb.png

Actually- I just had another thought: I believe that the original version of THX-1138 has the original green logo as well. Does anyone with the "Special Edition" DVD know if that was still retained? Perhaps that transfer would have the highest quality of all.

Help Wanted: a bitmap of the original green 'Lucasfilm Limited' logo?
Time

Hello! I was wondering if any of you know where to find a large bitmap of the original green Lucasfilm Limited logo at the start of all three films in the trilogy. Or, perhaps it could be grabbed from the beginning of “Caravan of Courage”. I ask because in my prequel edits, I intend to use the original logo. I would rather not just rip it from the OT because it is somewhat blurry and shakes around a bit. This way, I could have the logo in high-res and stable as well, for DVD quality.

Does anyone know of such an image?

Hi! I was wondering if a more knowledgeable person could shed some light on the following:

1. What font was used for the subtitles in the theatrical prints of Episode I?
2. What font was used for the subtitles in the theatrical prints of Episode II?
3. What font was used for the subtitles in the original version of SW?
4. What font was used for the subtitles in the original version of ROTJ?
5. What font was used for the subtitles in later VHS and laserdisc releases of the SW trilogy?
6. What font was used for the DVD subtitles for any of the movies?
7. What fonts were used for the ending credits of the SW movies? Were the classic trilogy end credit fonts different from the prequels?
8. What font was used for the original green Lucasfilm logo at the beginning of each film in the trilogy?

Thanks ahead of time for enlightening me on this.

Also, Twister- sorry I forgot to respond before. I’m using Vegas to color-correct the Anakin/Padme balcony scene. I’m adjusting brightness, contrast, and red/green/blue levels (taking midtones, highlights, and shadows into account). Also, the saturation is adjusted. This is rather painstaking because it is done on a shot by shot basis (because one setting doesn’t fit all the shots with such a radical change). I’ll need to spend a lot of time making certain that the shots are consistent and match each other in the final scene. Also (as Chaltab suggested), I need to watch out for the sky, which was too light in the rough cut.

Did some more recording today. Also, the new Jedi Analysis Robot dialogue is as follows:

The item you have placed in the sensor tray is a toxic saberdart.
As you can see on your screen, these projectiles are used by the cloners in the Kamino system. They are rarely found within the Republic (in place of, “Stand away from the sensor tray, please.”)

Any suggestions or improvements on dialogue are welcome.

I have completed dubbing sessions for both the brief Anakin/Palpatine scene and also the Coruscant speeder chase today.

No dialogue changes in those two scenes (besides cut lines)

As if his sense of her presence pushed away the painful vision -- a sorely needed opportunity to show romantic sparks between these two.

Ah...I see. In that case, the original line definitely stays.

Well, what I did was: first, I recorded a lot of takes of the orginal line. Then, the other line occured to me and I lip synched that a dozen times as well. So the original lines were all recorded as well. I record originals, I record changes, and then I record alternates that seem appropriate at the time. Later, I can select original lines or alternate lines and have a variety of takes to choose from.

Come to think of it, that line may not be appropriate there. I was just thinking of the Vader unmasking scene in ROTJ for some reason, and I for some reason thought of an extremely rude exchange:

Anakin: Don’t go.
Padme: I don’t want to disturb you.
Anakin: You already have.

(Another one of Vader's lines from that scene). Then, I thought of the other line, and it may have seemed brilliant at the time because I was comparing it with the one above. You know what- I'll use the original line.

"Don't fix it if it ain't broke." I sometimes find myself (like Lucas) forgetting that. Actually, I'm just starting to appreciate how much restraint it takes to not go bananas during the editing process. Although I've written and edited more than one amateur film, doing this with Star Wars is giving me a different perspective on the whole thing.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Hello again- I have done the 1st dialogue recording session for this project and have completed the dubbing for the Anakin/Watto scene and the Padme/Anakin scene (when Anakin decides to leave Naboo to save his mother).

A couple minor changes in the latter that occurred to me as I recorded:

Original:
Anakin: Don’t go.
Padme: I don’t want to disturb you.
Anakin: Your presence is soothing.

Anakin: Don’t leave.
Padme: I don’t want to disturb you.
Anakin: Nothing can stop that now.

CUT is: Anakin: I saw her as clearly as I see you now.

Original: I have to help her.
Dubbed: I have to save her (camera is off Anakin’s lips anyhow).

But progress is being made.

Pan & Scan O-OT Project (Released)
Time
ocpmovie: You're the only other person I've ever heard talk about this- utilizing pan-scan LD's and superimposing them over the widescreen image to give it more detail. I love the idea and have had it for a long time.

The only problem I was having (which has been mentioned) is the issue of having one half of the screen at a greater detail and resolution than the other. I would hope you wouldn't be able to detect a "box" around the pan-scan addition (different amounts of grain, different print, etc.). There's the risk it might not work out.

But I've had that idea for a long, long time. Good luck!

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Sorry for the delay; I was away for a few days.

-Klokwerk, it looks great. I’m still kind of flabbergasted that I have one of the best (if not the best) covers created for a fan edit, even better than the MagnoliaFan covers, and I haven’t even released it yet. I’m flattered!

-How is the edit coming? Very well, I am pleased to say. At this point, however, I am working solely on the sound mix (mainly removing Anakin and Lama-Su’s dialogue, but also sprucing up a bit when needed and adding a couple of other subtle sound effects). After that is done, I’ll synch it to the film and actually begin to work on the video cutting and contrast/color correction work, cropping, subtitles, and re-sequencing. As I have already planned each aspect of this in detail, it’s simply a matter of executing it at this point.

Future plans after Ep. II- I will do edits of both Ep. I and Ep. III. In my opinion, the best titles are “Balance of the Force” and “Revenge of the Sith.” My work with III will involve a major reworking of the action sequences at the beginning (cutting the juvenile silliness) and will involve dubbing Anakin once again as well as General Grievous. Also cut will be some of Palpatine’s antics (in the duel with Windu), Anakin’s “What have I done?”, the hair-combing scene, etc. Also changed (as has been with several other edits) will be Palpatine’s line about the midichlorians being able to create life.

Episode I, on the other hand, is an interesting story. I like Balance of the Force very much. Many of the things Kevin did with it are brilliant (particularly the podrace and the subtitled alien dialogue). Therefore, my edit of Episode I will be largely based on his- with a few key differences. First, I will not use his disc as a template, as the quality is not very good and I do not own a copy (only the XVID). I will therefore recreate his edit first, ripping directly from the official DVD, re-dubbing music that was present in his edit that I liked, and so on. Then, I will use the sound mix from an official German language DVD of Episode I and will mix these German lines in for the Gungans and the Nemoidians. Therefore there is no backwards dialogue and the language is not as instantly recognizable as French or Spanish, especially if muffled or distorted a bit. The subtitles will also be redone using a combination of the originals, Hal 9000’s, and ADigitalMan’s sets (and a couple ideas of my own). The ending sequence music will be replaced with part of the first movement of the Karelia suite by Sibelius- I have already completed the track and mixed it with the end credits music, and it is seamless. Even better transition than the original, in fact, because it actually builds up to the correct key in my version. There will other minor changes throughout.

I’d also like to get hold of the ADigitalMan edits at some point for some more ideas on these.

George Lucas says that the original versions of SW will probably be released on DVD
Time
Obi-Wan Spicoli brought this up in another thread, but it's buried and did not get any attention. There's a recent interview with George Lucas. In it is the following exchange:

Daily Bruin: You've said the last time you would issue the original versions was on VHS several years ago. But with VHS potentially becoming obsolete one day, will you release them on DVD?

George Lucas: I don't know. I mean, when VHS becomes obsolete it will probably get released on DVD, I imagine. But I'm not going to spend the effort to restore them (to) what I consider to be the real film.

The article can be found here: Star Wars article

Lucas also admits to having tried on Anthony Daniel's C-3PO suit.

But what he's saying now is that he "imagines" that the original cuts will "probably" get released to DVD, just not restored. An interesting change in opinion.

Thoughts?
