I experienced a great honor today. As luck would have it Vic Mignogna and company decided to have the world premiere of their new web series Star Trek Continues at the Phoenix Comicon which just so happens to be my hometown.

I've seen a couple episodes of New Voyages and so I thought I knew what to expect in regards of the production value, acting and writing. Boy was I taken by surprise. I knew that since Doug Drexler was handling all of the space shots that they were going to look amazing but man...it was just so beautiful. Second, the cast they've assembled for this is perfect. Vic does a wonderful job as Kirk. Grant Imahara was a surprise and delight as Sulu. And Chris Doohan as Scotty just felt oh so right.

The sets were fantastic. They actually bought an entire building and rebuilt all of the original Enterprise sets as they were on the Paramount lot during the production of the original series. They also plan to expand as time goes on.

The script was superb. It dealt with the return of the Greek god Apollo. It was pitch perfect and felt like a real script from the era that had just never been produced.

Vic Mignogna and his team have somehow managed to recreate the magic of the original series in a way I didn't think was possible. Vic in addition to directing, starring and editing also wrote and performed additional music for the episode so that the original series score blended with the episode perfectly. Every facet of the production is filled with so much love and dedication that you can feel it.

The only sad thing about it was they weren't allowed their full two hours because they also wanted to do a signing afterward and there was one last panel scheduled after theirs so the Q&A was cut very short. I hope that didn't cast a pall over the experience for them. I blame Wil Wheaton. =P

They were all so wonderful though. They ended up staying almost two hours after it ended so that they could meet and sign posters for EVERYONE.

With all that said, I highly recommend you check it out for yourself. So without further ado here's Star Trek Continues episode 1 Pilgrim of Eternity.

The machine needs to be logged into the account to identify the game is being used by the authorised user.

So you can switch off the console but you can't play any of your games on it unless you are online and logged in.

If you get banned or the service is closed the machine becomes a brick.

“There are many devices in your life that require the Internet to function,” he said. “Xbox One is no different in that it requires, at some point in the beginning and at various times through its on state, to connect to our cloud and to our Internet. That is to deliver Xbox Live functionality, that is to deliver download content to you, that is to deliver some of the innovations around TV and entertainment that we showed today. But it doesn’t require it to be online all the time.”

Totilo then asked him how often it checks your connection, and the response was “Depends on the experience.”

“For single-player games that don’t require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today.”

Xbox One Offline Woes

The thing that stinks is that so far the evidence is pointing toward them charging you to play used games. One of the Microsoft officials stated that if you try to use your buddy's disc they'll charge you full price before you can do so. That also would erase the game from your buddy's account.

Pfft! Shameless knockoff, indeed!

Not to mention it was also the first to allow overlapping levels so that you could have multi-story buildings and even real bridges. Or that it actually had a story with fully voiced cutscenes.

I also recall reading a long time ago someone discussing the inner workings of the Jedi engine. About how the devs actually used window portals looking into other parts of the map to make various sections feel larger. Which was something completely unheard of at the time.

The Spock Uhura relationship has it's seed in The Man Trap. The scene where Uhura flirts with Spock was cut from syndication prints for decades. (Not to mention Nurse Chapel is the aptly named "not appearing in this movie" either.) In spite of Vulcan's tragic demise,  there have to be plenty of colonies elsewhere, just as human have spread out into the galaxy. And Spock may not have undergone Pon Farr yet...

Spock is for Nurse Chapel only! As for Vulcans, Spock explicitly states that he believes the surviving population after the destruction of his homeworld to be around 10,000. I would have figured there would have been a lot of colonies too but apparently not.

As for Pon Farr, apparently that's going to be covered in the follow up comic After Darkness. (No, really!)

Has anybody been able to explain why PT Chewie looks odd to all of us?

Yes it's another newly made costume. But I can never pinpoint what it is about the new costume that looks wrong.

It's the mouth. They've jammed it with all kinds of animatronics making it bulkier and....odd. Well that and the new crew at ILM can't help tweaking his features to look more animalistic. Look at those ape hands, I'll take the black gloves of the OT any day.

Aha! I thought this might become relevant someday. Check out this episode commentary with Dave Filoni for what could be some insight on the upcoming show.

It's not the new trilogy tie-in I'd hoped for but it's the next best thing. Really looking forward to what Dave and the crew put together. Though I do wonder what your guys reactions will be if he decides to bring Ahsoka back. =P

Isn't that supposed to Harry's daughter or something? They can ignore the comics on a whim anyway.

There is a line mentioning her father, so that is probably the case. However, this comic mini-series was actually co-written by Roberto Orci. That being the case, I'd say it's a safe bet if they ever do have Mudd in one of the films it'll be this one.

Is Bajor even known to the Federation in the 23rd century?

In this filmverse they probably are considering a podunk Earth bar had Cardassian Sunrise on the menu in the last film.

I'm sick of hearing people say "I don't Wanna watch a movie about old people!" and using pics of the actors at their worst as examples to back themselves up. Cause, well, I don't wanna watch a movie about little kids!

I'm sick of hearing people saying it's gonna be about a bunch of "little kids." The original cast is how old now? Why would their children still be actual children?

So I just stumbled upon an interview with Lindelof (BLECH) that is filled with interesting things:

If you were standing in space at a spot where a ship just zapped off from, is there something we can do, considering it is 6 months after the last movie, that can show us that there are new technologies at play?

There definitely are changes to the old school technology, but that make sense in a modern context. The first that comes to mind is the scene where Scotty and Keenser are at the bar and Kirk is in orbit around Kronos. Kirk picks up his communicator and basically calls him as if it were a cell phone. This, you know, wasn't exactly how it was done before, but, to be fair, when those original shows and films were made we didn't have our cell phones and the current ease of contact. That move makes sense to a modern audience.

LINDELOF: What happened in that case, actually, is Kirk is walking down the hallway and he says to Uhura “will you find Mr. Scott and patch him through to my communicator” and she says “right away, Captain.” So then you cut to the other scene. But when we were editing we realized that the way you want to introduce Scotty is to cut to San Francisco, find him in the bar, and then have Kirk call him. The audience has somewhat forgotten that he left the ship – by having Kirk announce “track him down” it takes away from the fun of the storytelling. So we lost that bit not fully aware that this was a significant change from canon. But that's the explanation for it.

Can you confirm that the creatures we see with Kirk during his off-hours on Earth are Caitians?

LINDELOF: You mean the women with the tails?

Yes, this is the species that Lt. M'Ress was, from The Animated Series.

LINDELOF: Yes, we can confirm this.

He's so full of bull.

This has more to do with the comic tie-in than the movie itself but....WHY WAS MUDD A BAJORAN LADY???? I mean, April mentions her father being just as bad as her so this is probably his kid but....that really felt rebooty and not alternate timeliney. Though that is a fun explanation for his earring. =P

So, the whole film and comics being tied together seems to be out the airlock. What with the number of the deaths in the comic and yet Kirk claiming he hasn't lost anyone during his time in command.

Secondly, and most weirdly was the Gorn. They were just introduced in the game as intergalactic baddies and yet here in the film Bones claims he once performed a caesarean section on one. 005, was that in the game? If not, what the heck?!?

The biggest issue I have is the game ending with the crew being sent to the planet to start the next movie. The ship has huge chunks missing, there are still loose Gorn onboard I'm sure, parts of the interior were on fire... I'm sure none of that will be mentioned in the movie. Also, the writer worked with Kurtzman and Orci so this is "canon" in the JJverse. The problem with that is that the "Countdown to Darkness" comics which are also "canon" end with the crew being sent to the planet to start the next movie. Both can't be "canon". They were doing so well keeping things straight, they had maybe 30 comics & one movie, all of it was working out pretty well. Then they sign off on contradictory lead ins to the second movie. Oh well. I'm pretty sure the comics are more "canon" in that they are about Kirk questioning the Prime Directive and don't end with the Enterprise in several pieces. But they could have had the game lead into the comic instead of creating this contradiction with the very few things they could contradict with.

From what I can tell the comic and game aren't necessarily contradictory. At the end of the comic Pike orders them to drop off April at the nearest starbase before continuing on their mission to Nibiru. So let's assume they do that then on their way to Nibiru they pick up a distress call and end up on that vulcan space station.

I haven't played the game but from the description I've read the game ends with a captain's log describing T'Mar as having recovered enough to resume duties on New Vulcan. So that would seem to suggest time has passed enough to deal with the damage to the ship and loose Gorn before they resume heading to Nibiru.

I still can't get over the fact that the Jedi uniforms in the prequels are what Obi-wan wears in A New Hope because its what Obi-wan wears, but no one noticed that everyone on Tattooine wears the same clothes and it wouldn't make sense for a Jedi in hiding to dress like a Jedi.

I don't know but seeing as though he was in hiding, I don't think mingling with the locals was on his agenda. Maybe when he ventured into Mos Eisley to get supplies he didnt wear his robe. Shrug.

Right, like that time he ventured into Mos Eisley to charter a ship to take him to Alderaan, and changed out of his Jedi robes first in order to be less conspicuous prior to engaging in intergalactic travel.

It's a ridiculous point anyway and I WAS being mildly sarcastic C3PS. I mean at that juncture how was we (the audience) supposed to know that what Obi-Wan was wearing was standard Jedi attire?

We wouldn't because he wasn't supposed to be. Quite a few background characters in Mos Eisley were all dressed identically to Obi-Wan.

Then again, maybe Mos Eisley was a really popular Jedi hideout. Maybe the used speeder dealer burned Obi-Wan because they have a history:
