I've been checking out different Star Wars podcasts lately. ALL OF THEM were outraged that someone would disparage the Special Editions and the Prequels. Even more so that they would hire that someone to write a Star Wars film.

The only comments he made that I didn't care for were the ones toward Lucas. I may disagree with the plaided one but I still respect him.

That said, I think Whitta has the potential to write a great Star Wars script.

Another Director Passes on Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’

For Marvel movie fans looking years ahead, past next summer’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron and into Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where even more new heroes and properties will be introduced, today’s news saw another director join the studio. Essentially confirming that the long-rumored Doctor Strange movie will be hitting theaters in 2016-17, horror film writer and director Scott Derrickson (Sinister) has been confirmed to take charge of the Master of the Mystic Arts for Marvel.

It’s great to see Marvel Studios opening another facet of the comics universe and introducing magic through Stephen Vincent Strange (who was namedropped in Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but what about the solo character film that was supposed to begin shooting this week? Ant-Man is without a director ever since Edgar Wright, who made the project a reality for Marvel and worked on it for eight years, left at the last minute after the studio took the script away from him and co-writer Joe Cornish and turned it into something that didn’t mesh with his vision.

Whether or not the latest draft is good or bad for the standalone story or the bigger picture plans of the franchise, it’s something Edgar Wright wasn’t interested in making. Of the directors reportedly shortlisted to replace him, the job isn’t attractive enough either, evidently, because none of them are going to take it. What happens now?

Its start date has been moved to July, giving Marvel Studios and whoever helms the feature just enough time (hopefully) to get the film out next July without compromising the final product. Marvel looked towards directors with proven comedy backgrounds as potential replacements, with names Adam McKay (Anchorman 1 & 2, The Other Guys), Rawson Thurber (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, We’re the Millers) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) making the shortlist.

McKay was deep into talks to take the gig but has since passed. As for Fleischer, he might be helming Ghostbusters 3 and reportedly isn't interested in jumping into an immediate major shoot since he and his wife just had a child. That leaves Thurber who The Wrap reported was the new frontrunner, but This is Infamous was quick to report that he turned down the offer as well. AICN reports he wasn’t offered the gig though so it may have just been at the meeting stage.

I don't think George has input in much of anything anymore. He came up with the outline for VII-IX and then handed everything over to Kennedy.

Since then they've hired a lot of writers who've been busy writing various projects.

Filoni has confirmed that George hasn't been involved with Rebels at all.

I think his focus has been on that museum he's been trying to build for a while now.

Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ To Be Directed by ‘Sinister’ Helmer Scott Derrickson

Doctor Strange is not yet officially a part of Phase 3 of Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe, though studio head Kevin Feige has all but confirmed that the Sorcerer Supreme will, in fact, be joining the MCU between the release of the second and third Avengers installments. It’s been nearly three months since reports began circulating about the shortlist of directors being considered to helm the project – and today, we can offer an update on the situation.

According to Variety, Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) has entered proper talks to helm the Doctor Strange movie, after he was previously reported to be one of the filmmakers being eyed by Marvel Studios. The talks between the studio and Derrickson are reported to still be ongoing, though Variety‘s sources claim that “a deal should be struck shortly” – and THR‘s source are so confident about a deal being reached, that the site is already claiming that Derrickson “has signed on to direct the Marvel feature,” even in the absence of confirmation from Marvel.

Indeed, it seems safe to say that Derrickson will end up directing Doctor Strange, judging by this Tweet he just posted online:

@scottderrickson

My next movie will be STRANGE:

3:03 PM - 3 Jun 2014

The Doctor Strange comic books, for those unfamiliar, generally revolve around the arrogant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, who is robbed of his fine surgical capabilities, only to later gain newfound supernatural abilities, which allow him to protect Earth from a variety of danger magical threats. Many a fan of the Stephen Strange character has already voiced their support for Derrickson to call the shots on a live-action Doctor Strange film, given his experience (and critical acclaim) in the supernatural horror genre – a sandbox he played in yet again for his next movie, Deliver Us From Evil, which opens in theaters this summer.

Derrickson, among other things, has demonstrated a knack for grounding the horrifying and fantastical without removing that sense of wonder (dark and disturbing, it may sometimes be) – a skill that ought to serve him well, when it comes to adapting Doctor Strange so that it feels like his own creation and fits the Marvel Movie Universe. Indeed, Feige previously made it known that he thinks the movie “needs to be a Ditko/Kubrick/Miyazaki/The Matrix mind-trip,” so you need someone who can manage a firm grasp on that sort of “weird” dark superhero story.
