GL's alleged apology on Amazon

Agreed. All of the great work that other people poured into the original versions of the films have now been completely trampled in the mud by George Lucas' attitude. Their hard work and artistic brilliance was nothing more than a crappy intermediary step in his mind; forget about preserving history. Its sickening to think about. He's a rich, out of touch, and haughty man who thinks the world revolves around his petty and selfish vision.

Poor guy - his childhood dream never came true...

lol

I have a good friend that wants to show me Comic Book the movie. I'm mostly interested in seeing it because it stars actors who are cartoon-voice actors and it would be so neat to see them and not just hear them. I'll probably try and guess if whose voice I've heard where when watching it. (BTW, Mark Hamill as the Joker in Batman the animated series was brilliant work of his.)

Heh, I had the exact same thing happen to me a few weeks ago. Thought I'd at least enjoy the good scenes by jumping to them. There really weren't any.

Sure the space fight at the beginning was fun, but only the first time since video games can give me almsot the same gratuitously sensational visuals yet with more interaction. And yes, the fight scenes at the end are nice, but I was pissed by the time I got that far and couldn't enjoy them either.

Some whimisical story of how Anthony Daniels couldn't see where he was going in the suit and fell down a flight of stairs. You know, funny stuff like that. Instead, he either talks about digital effects (like I've said before) or just narrates the story, as if we can't figure it out by watching it! It's not as though the prequels at least are thirty year old movies where it's hard to discern what happened on a particular day of shooting. But I guess all those blue screen sets do tend to blend together to the point that you don't remember what took place when...

Considering the fact that I believe half the people here could have made better prequel movies than George Lucas, I believe you may be expecting too much of his great mind.

I agree.

Perhaps George is telling the truth when he thinks there is no market that would pay for the original trilogy. It's completely idiotic of him, but with his recent creative oddities that's not too hard to believe about him now is it? Stopping bootleggers has little to do with this I believe. If anything, the success of bootleggers merely increased Lucasfilm's interest.

Hmm, yes, the Jedi do seem to be nature oriented, but that understanding of nature is not limited to living objects. They also understand how the force relates to inanimate or technological objects. They don't have an aversion to machines (their light sabers for instance). Plus, Coruscant could be very old and have an ancient temple on it. And at the very least, people who are sensitive to the force can pop up on any world, and you'd need places for them, especially in the arguably most populated planet in the republic.

Really? But according to "Lynne Hale" for "publicity" at Lucasfilm:

"The 1993 Laserdisc masters represented the best source for providing the original versions as DVD bonus material. Although these are non-anamorphic versions, they do preserve the original widescreen composition of the movies."

If we take what she said to be strictly accurate, then they will be using "Laserdisc masters." Again, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but a Laserdisc master would technically be a parent Laserdisc whose data is copied onto all the other Laserdiscs sent out to for purchase. Otherwise "Lynne" would have said "Digital Tape Masters" used to make the Laserdisc masters.

Hmm, this is interesting. I wonder if Star Wars could ever become something like a true mythology, with multiple versions of the same basic tales being told by different people at different times. That would be neat.

Other changes. The Jedi are a looser organization (which a lot of OOT fans seem to agree on) and they do not answer to anyone, but respect the Republic since it has always been a champion of good, etc.

Hmm, they were called "Knights" and thus should have had some official recognition under the republic. Some kind of thing where they are expected to uphold the ideals of the republic at least (more than mere respect) and be subject to its laws. Otherwise, I agree that the organization should have been much looser and having a more Medieval feeling of Lords and enlightened Nobles. Perhaps the reliance upon pupils from nobility could figure into the story in terms of a Jedi order that is becoming stagnant and no longer able to aid the republic as well.

Anyway, the beloved Queen Amidala died, and in their grief, the Alderaans decided to clone the Queen so that they may always have her wise rule. Of course, this upset the Organa family who would’ve been the ones to rule if she were not the queen. In tribute to them, they were made the senatorial representatives of Alderaan. So, the Queen was cloned again and again, the Amidala of Episode I would be the sixth incarnation, and not quite ready to lead as she needs to mature. In her stead, a council has been appointed. However, the council is corrupt and weak, and against her wishes, they conceded to the Mandalores demands, allowing them to occupy the planet. (As a side note, the Galactic Republic has deemed that cloning is an abomination and abolished it, so they believe the Queens are just descendents).

I really like that idea. Could lead into an actually cool way to envision the clone wars.

(The Jedi don’t have a ‘temple’ on Coruscant. There are no midichlorians. The Force is as it was in the OOT. Yoda is not located on Coruscant, either.)

Hmm, but I do like the idea of temples and ancient religious relics surrounding the use of the force, so I don't mind a temple being on Coruscant. Otherwise, dump the midichloriforms, I agree there.

My biggest problem with your version is the Skywalker prophecy idea and the ancient evil in the bunker. Its far more dramatic to stick to normal people and keep Skywalker an average family name with no special amazing associated with it. Anakin Skywalker was an average guy but a skilled warrior with amazing piloting skills and thus Obiwan decided to train him for those core reasons. It is also a lot more dramatic to stick with people who have free will and can choose to be evil or good, instead of a one-dimensional force of evil that possesses anyone.

My ideas:

I did always get the impression from Obiwan's statement that Anakin, during the time of his training, actually had the name Darth Vader in some strange way. (Or I've also thought that, like in your version, there were two pupils and eventually their identities got mixed up in the flow of events; Anakin took the name of his fellow pupil for some dark reason.) There are lots of ways to account for that impression in Obiwan's statement, but the easiest would be to have Anakin be a highly experienced youth by the time he meets "Ben," but one who has also lived a very troubled past. He'll be one really cool guy but with some nasty mistakes in his past. I figure that in order to avoid certain authorities (maybe the "huts") Anakin Skywalker has assumed the name Darth Vader for himself.

(Oh, I figure Anakin has to call Obiwan "Ben" [somewhat to Obiwan's chagrin] and then that name has to catch on so that nobody uses the name Obiwan by the time Anakin gets Luke and Lea's mother pregnant!)

One idea that I have is that Vader/Anakin would be in the prequal trilogy as much as Vader was in the classic trilogy. In other words: I'd have him be in the background, but instead of a kickass bad guy who comes in to mop up the good guys, he'll be a kickass good guy who relentlessly hunts down the bad guys. This means that in the beginning of Episode I Anakin would already be Obiwan's apprentice and somewhat on his own. I'm not too fond of this idea however, since I would want the younger Obiwan to be the primary hero of the films, like Luke was the hero in the classic trilogy and therefore it might be hard for him to have a semi-successful apprentice at a young and inexperienced age. Thus I usually fall upon the idea that Vader is trained over the course of the movies and turns to the dark side at some point.

Less space on the DVD being devoted to good image quality.

Still, what's worrying me the most is the Laserdisc-master issue. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know DVDs are better than Laserdiscs, but DVDs do have some problems in comparison to it (such as a lack of true analogue motion blur). Therefore, we'll have the already-present Laserdisc deficiencies being further compounded by DVD deficiencies.

Edit: Oh, and by the way, Lego Star Wars is one awesome video game. Very fun. I'm looking forward to a new game based on the classic trilogy.

The chamber wouldn't just have to have been for meditation. It could also perform extra medical purposes for Vader that his suit is unable to provide. Also, I'm sure it would be nice to get that mask off from time to time and let your skin breath a little more normally.

Also, on the VHS copies I own, I'm sure that Darth Vader's skin is pale white with pink scarrs, just like in RotJ. Maybe there is a problem with the DVD release at that scene?

Whatever. *tosses out disk*"

I would be curious too, but George Lucas has made me hate the Special Editions by trying to erase the existence of the original trilogy. I would have loved the special editions had he not begun doing this. As it is now, I cannot even bring myself to watch the 2004 DVDs I purchased. They just sit on my shelf, ignored. And now I'll have to buy a second set because of that creep? I'm not going to do it. It's depressing.

So then he overcompensates and loses all sense of artistic subtlety.

I agree with the "new scan," zero restoration approach. DVD is a digital format and all about the resolution. Even with dirt and blurr, you can pick up a lot more detail if you start with a high resolution scan to begin with.

Heh, something just struck me as funny, here: Who is making the bigger stink in this situation? The supposedly "bitchy" and "whiny" fans who say they won't get this cheap release or George Lucas who said the same release would be a test to see how well the original trilogy can sell? It seems to me that George Lucas is being far more unreasonable and bitchy. Still, our complaining should be louder than his, so we can negate his argument in the realm of public opinion.

If this DVD doesn't sell well, I'm betting our anger concerning the inferior product will speak louder than George Lucas' doubt concerning a viable market for the original trilogy. Then, imagine if this release still sells like hotcakes compared to the 2004 release? It’s a win/win for us to whine and make as loud a stink as possible, and then maybe turn around and purchase this release without actually saying so.

I should definitely write a letter to Lucasfilm this week.
