Seeing the Saga in order - a review by a first-time viewer....

Episode IV
Episode V
Episode VI - stop the movie right after Luke/Obiwan talk on Dagobah about his father.
Episode I
Episode II
Episode III
Episode VI - continue the movie with Luke entering the rebel base to talk about destroying DSII

The reason I would stop right after the ObiWan/Luke talk in ROTJ, is the saga isn't about Vader yet, nor Palpatine, nor the jedi when you watch the OT first. The OT is about Luke, Leia, and Han and eases into the new plot point in ROTJ of Emperor/Vader/Luke battle.

By showing the viewer up to Luke/ObiWan in ROTJ, you keep them in the context of caring about the good guys, and I believe by showing ROTJ in 1-6 order, they won't give a hoot about saving Han in ROTJ, cause they will be so predisposed to the PT storyline that is mostly about Jedi vs Sith, and I will go even farther with 1-6, they probably won't give a shit about Han/Leia romance in ESB either!

By showing the PT after the Obiwan/Luke talk in ROTJ, it is almost like Obiwan is narrating the PT to Luke, as he appears in the first shot in TPM and the last shot in ROTS. Then the remainder of ROTJ keeps in context with the PT story of Jedi vs Sith, or Luke/Vader/Emperor while the overall macro storyline of the rebels vs empire comes to a close as DSII, Vader, and Emperor are all dead at the end of the movie. The End.

That's a nice approach. If I were able to endorse a serious watching of the PT, I would go with that.

Did Anakin's fall start with Qui-Gon?

I too liked how Obiwan was the good guy of the prequel trilogy. (Unfortunately George didn't make him the main character as he should have.) Though I agree with Gaffer that he should have made more mistakes.

The reason it comes off so jarring is Lucas changed the context of the movie after shooting the original turn scene. If you listen to the ROTS commentary by Lucas, he is suprisingly candid about how he reconfigured the movie after the original shoot, and how his original vision got changed.

Yeah, I remember when Zombie first described the change. It helps everything make more sense in terms of how the movie was made. It just really leaves much to be desired. I preferred the new approach actually; it gave Anakin a personal reason for turning (one where he became likable for the first time), it simply just wasn’t good enough to explain what he then went on to do (at least not in a way where he remains likable at all).

In actuality though, the real fault in this situation was George’s sloppy thinking. He changed his mind while making the prequel trilogy and decided that someone as evil as Darth Vader should never be able to repent and be redeemed. So he invented some bullshit about the good Anakin Skywalker being killed by the evil Darth Vader (in his head or something) and then being resurrected by his two children in Return of the Jedi (somehow). He actually thought that was a brilliant idea I’m guessing.

I always thought "turning for Padme" was the last straw so to speak. He was going to go to the dark side regarless. He always was seeking greater power. He was always angry, jealous, and wanted control. There are hints of this all through the PT. Also, I think Palpatine was great at influencing people, messing with their heads. Be it from the force or not.

Yeah that’s certainly reasonable. You simply need to then conclude that he was a psychopath though.

Well, that just happens to be one of my pet peeves. I try to never assume negative things about people unless I see an absolutely clear reason.

I love animals a lot and happen to think that baby seals are very cute. (That's what made the wrongness of the earlier picture, combined with the pun, funny by the way.) In no way do I think that needlessly clubbing a small animal is good in and of itself. However, at the same time I realize that it is just an animal, one that would go around eating other animals no doubt, and its life is not on the same level of a man who would hunt it for a living. Certainly it is not at the same level of the man's wife and children to the degree where they should be raped and murdered horribly in front of him. At first I thought that was an attempt at humor on the part of LS, but upon a second analysis I found that she was pretty clear with what she said, so I expressed shock and asked if she meant to say something so extreme. Now I know that she's even more extreme than I thought. I'm not here to attack anyone. I simply wish to express my thoughts and have discussions.

Now this thread is officially boring.

Did Anakin's fall start with Qui-Gon?
Time
Well, it had to do with the final turn. One minute he was happy, nice, and loving, the next minute he was murdering innocent children over an inconsequential dream sequence. Therefore, if a person's fall to the dark side of the force must involve their power to choose their own fate, as the OT implied (and even the PT implied at many points), Anakin must have been psychotic to have made the final choices that he made. If the dark side of the force doesn't involve choices on the other hand, then it operates in contradictory and arbitrary manner. If anyone can be great one minute and pure evil the next simply because the force can illogically force someone to be so, then there is little or no human drama left in the Star Wars universe.

Did I say that anywhere? No. But, putting words into people’s mouths is another interesting form of behavior, so thank you for exhibiting it.

I don’t think so. Did I say that you had stuttered?

my priorities are interesting aren't they?
i don't see how someone who kills animals as a career has a life anymore worth while than an animal themselves.

Wow, interesting ethic. Now you are becoming even more interesting to me.

So, in your approach to the world, would a person who slaughters poultry for human consumption be as equally evil as a Nazi who had supported and committed genocide in WW2? I’m very curious.

but of course you didnt try and explain yourself did you?
i guess you figured it would have made you seem more cool to post a statement like you did and run off like a coward.

Hmm, well, just what you would like have explained about me? I’m willing to assist.

I’d think it would be obvious that a man, trying to make a living, and probably trying support a family, is of more value than a baby seal. Call me crazy, but I didn’t know I actually needed to say that. Do you feel better now that I have made this opinion of mine clear?

And as for running off as a "coward," perhaps I am one, but I am unaware of how my earlier post in this thread speaks to that. Perhaps you can explain that to me? You know, being the brave, wonderful individual that you are, I’m sure you’ll calmly explain to me all of your clearly rational thoughts.

As for trying to sound “cool,” I’m not sure what you mean by that. If you refer to the brief nature of my post, I did not want to detract from the lighthearted feeling of this thread by initiating a boring discussion within it. I simply thought that expressing my shock over your lack of ethical sense would have been sufficient. Though, I suppose when looking back, I should have anticipated your response.

Exactly. He's not as cool as Ben, but he definitely manifests the image of a noble knight better than all the rest.

that picture is so funny that i hope his parents get cancer, his wife raped and his children die of some painful flesh eating disease.
and i hope he gets to watch them all die in front of his very eyes.

Over a baby seal? You have very interesting priorities.

Some places actually do that? I'm going to have to start asking about that before I give out my cash. I'm not going to pay a nice tip if it goes to everybody.

Really, by this point, more changes can only be a good thing. If George can change the SE version of the movies enough, then more and more people will simply stop recognizing them as the real thing. Or, at the very least, more people will begin demanding access to the theatrical versions in higher quality.

How do you figure?

Well, if you need me to state it more clearly: As far as I can see, too many people seem to believe that they are watching the real Star Wars when they watch the SEs. If George makes more changes, he can only alienate more of the people in that crowd as they realize that they aren't watching what they became originally attached to. Therefore, they'd be more likely to demand what they remember.

If an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, dump more resources into education. If the common person had the level of education about some of these substances that I have, more people would eschew them as I do.

I'm of that minority viewpoint as well. I don’t believe that any of us should waste our lives away with mind-altering substances (life is too amazing for us to ignore it like that), but if a particular person does no harm to other people, and abuses his body on private property, and doesn’t expect me to fork over money to clean up their pathetic lives, then I say that they can do as they like.

Let's not forget a government-enforced patent on a programming language (which should be a very weak patent at best in my opinion). (Not that I have anything against patents, but I think they're far too prolific and powerful right now. In general, everyone is in danger of being sued by everyone else these days and competitive freedom is certainly dwindling as a result.)

Otherwise, Bill Gates is a smart guy and I don't criticize him for his success, but I'd rather not use their products if I were given the choice. Their one-size-fits-all approach and their arrogance in thinking they KNOW what everybody wants really turns me off.

Prequel Character Names
Time
Originally posted by: JediRandy
No, I'm claiming that the names aren't that different at all and it's your dislike of the PT that gives the names a bad connotation.

Then I would tend to agree with your assessment, but you should have said that first if you ask me. (Though there's no excuse for a character named "Grievous." Also, most of the worst OT names were not uttered on-screen.)

However, in defense of the people here, the absurdity of the names stood out more in the PT because it wasn't good enough to make you want to believe its characters were real. In the OT, we believed that Lando sounded like it could be a real name in the Star Wars universe because it was all being presented in a believable way at that time. The PT loses my desire to believe it at many points and I would guess that many of the others here have similar experiences.
