Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

I don't normally use strong language when describing my reaction to artistic endeavors, but X-Men 3 was a disgusting pile of shit. The beginning, middle, and end of the movie were all concerned with nothing more than trash/cars swirling around in the air, manipulated by Mutant powers. All in all, an absolutely worthless movie unless the purpose for viewing it is to laugh your ass off (even then, if I wanted crass humor, there are better sources).

Those points are very true. Venom should not have been treated the way he was.

Hopefully the next Spider-Man movie won't give a shit about matching these films (via the same actors or story lines) and will simply jump right into the cool content and forget about dumbing things down. If I have to see another fucking comic book movie wasting hours on the hero's origin (or a villain's origin for that matter) I'm going to vomit. Those scenes are the main reason I'm beginning to think I might start avoiding comic book movies altogether.

Well, very high resolutions are useful in a home setting, but only if you're sitting two feet from the screen (as with a computer monitor) and you want the individual pixels to be very small.

Otherwise, with home theater, 1080p is more than sufficient (especially if you're upgrading from standard definition). With digital mastering, each frame of a movie would look basically smooth to you, even on an extremely large display. So, overall, I'm guessing 1080p will be the standard for quite some time to come.

In terms of that particular picture itself, it's 970x673 in reality, and each those displayed resolutions are merely shown to scale. Therefore the detail you see in that image is, in actuality, about half as good as 1920x1080.

Digital Cinema resolution is about what you'd want if you were building a display the size of an ordinary movie theater screen, but for most smaller home displays, 1920x1080 (the higher HDTV resolution) is more than enough. In fact, if your TV is small enough, you probably won't notice any increase in quality with 1920x1080p over 1280x720p (the lower HDTV resolution).

Or, better yet, a way to contain an ordinary fusion reaction and then tap its energy. That's where I'm putting my hopes for the future. The problem is how government grants are given to people with technological approaches that are preferred by the scientific establishment and that's not always the best way to fund new, better methods.

One issue in the United States concerns Social Security and I'm totally convinced that the system needs to be reformed to something privately controlled by individuals. Many other countries have had real success with similar reforms and yet many people resist those same reforms here citing certain financial problems that will occur in the short term. They don't care that people will get more for their money in the long term if the system were changed however.

In terms of this threads topic, I'm personally for government spending that reduces carbon emissions in ways that are purely positive. Such as encouraging more efficient technologies and nuclear power. However, some of the solutions, like ethanol fuel, actually don't help anybody (except maybe corn farmers) and that's even assuming that carbon emissions are a truly deadly threat (which is a hypothesis that I currently lean away from myself).

There is no way they're going to accomplish that without tapping into sci-fi and questionable metaphysics. They've depicted too many things that could not be reproduced with our everyday modern technology.

For one small instance, if the whispers in the jungle turns out to merely be "others" hiding in the trees (as one episode tried to suggest), that will be a lame explanation for the way those whispers were portrayed.

When we first saw Mikhail (eye patch guy) on the video monitors in the pearl station it was only for a brief glimpse and there was a lot of speculation that maybe he was Kelvin and Desmond didn't actually kill hm after all. That is probably what the blog you read was talking about.

Yeah, you're right again. I wonder how I got the weird idea that he had an eye patch. Probably because the blog connected the eye patch to him as you said and therefore I made that connection as well.

You're also probably right that he didn't come to the island at a post-Ben-massacre time with Mikhail. But, that doesn't mean Mikhail didn't! So, a part of my theory could still work!

Otherwise, Zion, I thought the Jacob part was perhaps the neatest portion of the episode (before Locke got shot). I'm guessing, at the moment, that Ben was lying when he said that Jacob doesn't like technology (also, they way he "talked" to Jacob showed that he didn't have much respect for him). Maybe whatever's up with Jacob doesn't mix well with electrical devices and that's what caused the strange disturbance?

Think Star Wars meets 2001: A Space Odyssey, with plenty of Star Trek to keep everything centered. Plenty of aliens, politics, warfare, and ancient mysteries/conflicts.

It's not edgy enough by today's standards, but if you liked Star Trek: TNG, and you liked Star Wars, then you should be able to get into this show a lot. Its story spans across four-five seasons (the first show to accomplish this feat) and its no small investment to get into, but I absolutely love the show. I'd just like to warn you that the main appeal for me is character drama (and how that relates to epic events), so if that's not your thing, then I'm not sure I'd be the one to say if it's for you.

Damn, I love it when episodes end at horrible points! This one was quite a ride getting there too. Season three is shaping up to be very good it seems. My hopes are increasing for the show as well.

I am really not seeing any similiarity between Hanso and Mikhail (Kelvin was Desmond's room mate at the hatch, not the eye patch guy). I am sure they are not the same actor, and I am pretty certain they don't intend them to be the same guy. Also I think Ben would know who Hanso is, and he seemed to regard Mikhail as a crazy ex-soviet communications officer who would shoot him if he didn't give warning before approaching his house. I imagine if we are ever going to learn anything of Hanso on the show, tonight may be the night for that.

Ahh, sorry about the name mixup. I read a blog by searching for "eye patch guy lost" in Google and read about that name for the eye patch guy. I forgot that there were two eye-patch fellows.

In fact, now that you mention it, I bet Hanso (if he's Mikhail) came to the island with Kelvin in an effort to save the island from Ben and his "hostile" followers. They made a deal for peace and cooperation with Ben (pretending to be surviving Darma workers) and were allowed to do their Darma duties unhindered as a result (like pushing the button). Of course, that all assumes Mikhail was being truthful when he mistook the plane-crash victims as the "hostiles" and wasn't merely pretending to mistake them at that time.

About identifying Hanso with Andrew Divoff's face, I pride myself on my skills when it comes to noticing small, visual similarities and I'm almost certain they're the same person. You can look at the nose and where they meet the eyebrows and many other small features and see them completely represented in the other photograph. Sure, the overall look is very different, but it's the details and the general shapes that match (as far as I can tell anyways).

As for the island, I've been guessing for quite a while now, based on the "fate" motif of the Island and Ben's early words that God couldn't see them, that the Island is actually an alternate version of the earth where this island actually does exist in the pacific due to a different evolution of the earth (and perhaps even a different evolution for the earth's inhabitants). It's the theory that I'm sticking to since it's the one I came up with on my own.

Not to be rude, but it is Blu-Ray not Blue-Ray.

Yes, and as you can see from my quote, I typed it out right the first time and the second was merely a lapse of attention. Also, you're not supposed to capitalize the R in "Blu-ray."

Wow, I had a feeling, the first time that eye-patch guy named Kelvin showed up, that he looked like the face of the guy on the "Hanso Foundation" website. I don't normally like looking up spoilers, but I thought looking at something like a website made for the show wouldn't hurt much:

http://www.thehansofoundation.org/

Now, I've compared that face to that picture of the actor that plays Kelvin (Andrew Divoff) and I'm almost totally convinced. They have the same face structure, same eye-wrinkles, same eyebrows, same asymmetrical qualities to the lips. That Kelvin character is going to be more important before the end if he's supposed to be Alfred Hanso. They might just be using the actor to play two different roles though, but we'll see. I'm guessing Alfred Hanso is in disguise.

Here's the best picture to compare with:

Here's another to see the general face structure and lips:

I'd say the episode that moved me the most (at least the first time I saw it) was the one where G'Kar was finally contemplating peace based on the attitudes of the dying Emperor. The ending of that episode was haunting and my opinion of G'Kar had completely turned around.

Otherwise, there are always those other big, epic episodes that always pop into my mind. That episode where G'Kar endures those lashes from that deadly whip was fantastic. Eh, too many episodes of this show were great for me to pick from them easily. I agree that Londo and G'Kar were the real stars of the series though.

I never saw Legend of the Rangers or that show that sort of followed B5 on cable. I had never even seen the fifth season until about two years ago (on DVD). I just loved the show from the first day the pilot episode aired on TV. So different from Star Trek. Then the actual show was even better than the pilot episode. I followed each new episode religiously for four years (till it moved to cable TV). Good stuff.

I think it was mostly intentional. But only somewhat for humor. The theme of the movie, if it had one, was clearly the idea of revenge and how it doesn't help us. Therefore, at that scene, I was guessing that Harry was eating his revenge pie (a dish best served cold).

I've been meaning to post on this all week, but I haven't had the time. That last episode was fantastic, but I'm guessing that today's episode might even be better. I don't watch or listen to previews so I don't have anything spoiled for me, but just based on how that last episode ended, they should have the quite the powder keg prepared.
