Spike TV ROTJ Summary

Let me know how many movies, books, TV shows you have ever seen where everything is explained or recapped halfway through the story!

A good reason why making the original movie into "episode IV" was a very bad idea. A really dedicated and talented person could have made that work, but George clearly bit off more than he wanted to chew and I don't think his talents were broad enough even if he had been willing.

How so? Even if there were people going to see it that hadn't yet seen the originals, there's still things he couldn't really do. He couldn't put Yoda or Obi-Wan in any real danger. Anakin, at some point, had to become Darth Vader. About the only surprise I think he could have pulled would be to either have Padme survive or have her die at Vader's hand. Either one of those would have been preferable to the crapfest we got. But aside from that, I don't think he could've really done a whole lot.

1. Don't let us know that Anakin Skywalker is Darth Vader or that Darth Vader sired Luke/Leia.

2. Never even show Yoda.

3. Have the prequels deal with totally unrelated characters altogether (centering on a young Obiwan at the most).

4. Have Palpatine not be the Emperor in one way or another in order to trick OT fans.

Will your interest in the Star Wars universe be affected...
Time
I'd want the original Star Wars in HD on Blu-ray, and then Empire Strikes Back+Return of the Jedi, but other than that I've never had much interest beyond those movies. I don't ever see that changing.

The only thing that's changed for me, is how I no longer have nearly the same level of respect for George Lucas that I once had. The way he disrespects the incredibly special nature of the original films really bugs me. After that, the way he acts like he's such a genius, when he actually relied on many talented people for the original movies' success, is also pathetic.

No, the thread was begun with the premise that the behavior of this incident is exclusive to Muslims.

Well, that could be an interpretation of the initial post, but it actually doesn't go so far as to say that and I had a different way of understanding it. As I tried to point out in my last post, there is a sense in which the singled-out behavior is "exclusive" to Muslims. It is not exclusive to Muslims in the sense of the event in its most basic form. It is exclusive, however, in the sense of a number of other dimensions. I would argue that these dimensions can lead us to conclude that the general body of Islam (at least in certain parts of the world) has a bigger problem with these sorts of events than other religions and ideologies.

Lets be thankful they drive hybrids and then fly personal jets, instead of driving Hummers and then fly personal jets.

Well, aside from the fact that I'd rather be thankful for things that actually matter, the difference between going on a shortly-timed trip in a Hummer and a Jet is so huge that you really shouldn't waste your time worrying about the Hummer right now.

comparing Islam to Christianity is ignorant. What is the percentage of extremist American Christians? The ones that attend gay marriage protests, burn Harry Potter books and want to kill doctors? Maybe 1%? That means there is roughly 1.6 million of these people in the USA. Saying "the difference between Muslims and Christians" is just stupid.

So, both sides of a particular religious difference can be found to have crazily violent people within their ranks and, as a result, we are therefore unable to make any reasoned judgments regarding which side might be more likely to produce crazily violent people in a logically generalized sense?

Both a barbaric society and a civilized society will produce murderers within their ranks to some extent. However, it is foolish to pretend that we cannot make a general distinction about which is more likely to do that. Even more important, it is extremely foolish to overlook teachings, perspectives, and ethics that influence mankind toward destructive behaviors. To casually throw out all analysis of human value systems for the sake of being "fair" is ridiculous to me.

I generally know who I see creating relatively-unprovoked, large-scale conflicts around the world. I generally know who I see murdering Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, and other types of people around the world while only offering the most laughable and shameful excuses in justification. Other, generalized groups of people have similar problems but do not have them of the same size, do not tolerate them as much, and do not have as many beliefs that breed them. This was the only point I saw Arnie.d making and I think it is incredibly unfair to call him ignorant for that.

Oh, and 1% is way, way too high.

Mother arrested for leaving children "unattended"

Look kids get kidnapped and/or die everyday. I don't care how far she away she was, several things could have happened to that baby including kidnapping, another car smashing into the van, the baby could have choked on something and died, or even just slip out of the seat and break it's neck. You cannot leave a child unattended at all, even to walk 15 ft, it is just not safe.

Those fears are possible, but in everyday life those fears are very irrational. I'd propose that most children are regularly in more danger while riding down the road with their parents in the car with them.

I don't necessarily see anything wrong with this law, if a child truly is in danger then an officer should have a degree of authority to take action. Officers aren't perfect and we shouldn't pretend that they never make mistakes. A huge problem with the law enforcement and justice systems throughout the world and throughout history is the lack of honesty when it comes to competency. If police or prosecutors would simply admit when they've made mistakes or generally gone too far, that would be a huge step in the right direction. Unfortunately we'd also need a public that is more forgiving and less politicians willing to use the mistakes of others to pretend that they are more competent. Some mistakes are understandable and in this case I think the officer made one.

After thinking about Insurrection some more, I guess the movie wasn't very good in terms of making me care a lot about what was going on. That's actually an integral part of a movie, but since I liked the characters already (being a fan of TNG) I sort of already cared about what was going on through the decent performances from those familiar/likable actors/actresses. That combined with the fact that I was nicely interested in the conceptual nature of the plot (the #1 best feature of a successful Star Trek story) I guess I was able to overlook that flaw.

Sounds like a bit of reason and common sense would have helped in the confrontation. Neither the woman nor the officer were behaving like they should have. I'm most disappointed with the police officer, however, since he should know better. The authority of a parent with a child is sacred to me and women can get emotional where their children are concerned. I hope that both of them have learned a lesson here.

Nemesis isn't that bad. It's got some kind of... well, stupid is the only word for it... plot elements, but it's sort of like a Next Generation Wrath of Khan with better special effects.

I'd go way beyond word "stupid" for that brainless movie's plot elements. Whoever wrote the story apparently thought Star Trek was a futuristic action series where spacemen fought goth vampires while flying around in little space pods that can maneuver through a ship's tiny walkways. The absolutely ridiculous story about the Picard clone was idiotic enough, but then the movie just got worse and worse from there.

Wrath of Khan dealt with science, ethics, and politics in neat ways. It also dealt with love, loss and revenge in ways that gave us a ton of great drama. And then the emotional death of Spock?! That was so great that they shouldn't have even brought him back. There was absolutely nothing in Nemesis that allows me to compare it to Khan, so I would like to know your reasoning behind that.

I've not seen Insurrection, but I can't imagine it being better than First Contact or Kahn, especially when I've heard almost nothing positive about it.

Those people complained about the movie for every reason I loved it. They hated its leisurely pace (which I found relaxing and contemplative), they hated how little action there was in it (which I think enhanced the other aspects of the story), and they hated how small-scale and non-epic the main threat was (which I loved). For once the crew of the Enterprise wasn't out to save the entire, damn universe for the umpteenth millionth time and I was glad about that. The story revolved around teamwork, scientific exploration, and doing what was right. The characters were normal people again and weren't expected to be intense action heroes at every turn. The slow, deliberate nature of the main struggle was also very interesting to me in the sense that the bad guys weren't ultimate bad guys out to annihilate everything for once, but actually had goals that were more subtle.

I liked Insurrection quite a bit more than First Contact. The latter was definitely one of the better Star Trek films, but all in all it was too superficial and unthinking for my tastes. It was more about having the crew experience a fun adventure in the past and have them fighting intense battles with Borg. There was nothing really meaningful in the film in terms of thought or drama (beyond the "line must be drawn here" bit), unlike in Khan (which provided both) and Insurrection (which was at least competent with its concepts).

In fact, Insurrection was so terrible that I never bothered seeing Nemesis.

Interesting. To me, Insurrection is the best (or at least second best to Khan) Star Trek movie ever made. The reason for that is because Insurrection actually captured everything that I find best about Star Trek. Perhaps that doesn't make the movie enjoyable from certain movie-going perspectives, but I would argue that it was very good in its own way.

Nemesis, on the other hand, is easily the worst Star Trek movie ever made in my mind. The reason is because it crapped a large turd over everything I find best about Star Trek. :(

LOST

You know, when a season is 23 episodes long, a crappy episode every now and then is to be expected. But when you only have 13 episodes in a season, you don't want to screw around with a bunch of crappy episodes, and that is exactly what we are doing this season with Lost. I am still trying to decide which episode was worse, this one or last weeks. Last week a lot of nonsensical nonsense took place, this week absolutely nothing took place. So the question is, which is more preferable, a retarded nonsense episode last weeks, or an pointless episode where nothing happens, like this weeks? Either way, they are just pointless filler, and you know something is wrong with a show when over half the episodes are pointless filler episodes.

Compared to the beginning of season 3 all of these episodes have been pretty good. This last episode was even better than many of the ones we got in season 2 if you ask me.

It was clear in season 2 that the show was going to focus on the characters in a more in-depth fashion. I was extremely frustrated with that at first, since I liked how stuff actually happened in the first season (I liked the plot more than the characters), but I care about the characters enough to where I'm okay with it all now.

Working on it :)

The fundamental color scheme for "OT Old Skool" is already great if you ask me. However, it could stand to be modified to allow us to better distinguish post boxes from the background color and to better distinguish each post from the posts immediately before and after.

Also, is the text on the reply screen set to a static size? I have a high resolution on my monitor and I'm straining to read what I'm typing here. I suppose, in the meantime, I can increase my browser's displayed text size if I need to type up anything large, so no rush. ;)
