Can you believe it? For the first time since the advent of the DVD format George has given us an actual high quality THEATRICAL CUT of one of the Star Wars movies. ;)

OMG! That's wonderful news! At least we managed to get 1 theatrical version of the films (it is the theatrical version right? No changes made?).

Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.
Time

I like George. He's one of my idols. I don't like the changes he made for the Blu-Ray (and all the time I thought he was done with making changes). But luckily, even though there is a digital sunset in the beginning of American Graffiti (which has been seen since the CE DVD) he hasn't made any changes to that since and remains that way for the SE DVD and Blu-Ray. I also enjoy his unique vision of fantasy and adventure that made Star Wars and Indiana Jones such magnificent films. And I do love the Star Wars saga (though II was so-so). If it wasn't for George, there be no Star Wars, no phenomenon. I know sometimes his Star Wars franchise sells out a little, but I look at the positives on some of the other stuff; the cartoons, the Ewok adventures, video games, and Lego (the latter which got me to become a Star Wars fans in the first place). I respect George as a writer, director, and a genius.

I heard the 2006 set with the GOUT is now gone...
Time

I've come up a few theories:

-The GOUT DVDs could return later in 2012 (maybe with new covers) cause like Asaki said, so the DVDs won't outsell the Blu-Rays

-Possibly when the Blu-Rays of IV-VI are released individually, they'll contain the GOUT disc as some sort of DVD copy but with the added benfit of it being the theatrical version (cause I don't see the 2004 version being the DVD copy)

-Maybe since with the uproar of the changes to the Blu-Ray, Lucasfilm is maybe secretly considering remastering the OOT for Blu-Ray and DVD (I know it sounds stupid, but it's just a theory)

Is GOUT resented?
Time

No, I DO understand what anamorphic means and understand what you said. I'm just saying I like to watch the films on DVD with the black bars. I'll put this in simplier terms; when I have a DVD with anamorphic enhancement I choose not to watch it anamorphically enhanced, mostly because i have a SD TV in my room. Still, my mom was watching A Summer Place last night on DVD on our HD TV and we didn't watch it anamorphically enhanced. We saw the film with the 1.78:1 widescreen black bars. My point, you either like anamorphic enhancement or you don't.

Well, if you want my opinion, I'm glad we got the GOUT on official DVD. To me, having something original or unaltered is precious in the digital format. I mean, if we never got the unaltered trilogy on official DVD, then what? The OT would be stuck on DVD with the 2004 SE while every other movie gets released on DVD as they were originally seen (Exceptions include unrated cuts, director's cuts, and extended editions though some people would like to own the original/theatrical version of any of those films with those said cuts). I know the 2006 transfers weren't the best but as someone who has the Dr. Gonzo fan set (no offense to him), the official release transfers look better in comparison (there's at least a little bit of more grain and detail) and George even went the extra mile to recreate the original 1977 opening crawl (complete with the lower case "r" in "rebel".). As for anamorphic, I don't care for that (incidentally, I cared when it came to Brazil from Criterion but that's because it had a new transfer which also incidentally was released the same year as the GOUT!). I still watch my films on DVD with the black bars (1.66:1-2.40:1) becuase I like to see the bars (especially the cinemascope ones). And if it wasn't for the release, we wouldn't have a new source for preserving our own preservations of the OOT. So be proud, be happy. I am. And although I'm not happy with the changes Lucas made to the Blu-Ray, I'm still happy to be a Star Wars fan.

Some screencaps between the 2004 DVDs and the Blu-Rays:

I must say (though you'll disagree with me) changes aside, the Blu-Ray captures look remarkable! You can a bit more detail and grain. Say what you will about the transfers, but I think they're the best in DVD/Blu-Ray restoration.

Right now, I'm having mixed feeling about the "Nooooo". On one hand it does add a feeling for Darth, who can no longer have the Emperor control him like a puppet, knowing his love for his son is more powerful. On the other hand, it is an insult to us fans who hoped the original scene would be left alone. The original will never be topped by another. I'm fine with the 2004 editions, but I hope thses changes to the Blu-Ray are the last time. Plus, one can hope this incident will convince George to full restore the original theatrical versions of the saga for Blu-Ray with NO changes. Incidentally, if and when I get a Blu-Ray player, I'm buying this set becuase to me, it's would an honor to have Star Wars in my collection. This has been My 2 Cents.

I guess George couldn't even stay away from making changes for the Blu-Ray. I'd thought the 2004 versions were going to be the last of the changes. But I was wrong. The "No" in this version is cliche at best. I mean, why? Why did George think this was necessary? To add some dramatic tension? George needs to take a page from Speilberg and just leave his films as they are (even if he changed them once or twice).

I found this, which could be a good thing:

http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/thread/303111/star-wars-on-blu-ray-fall-2011/1020#post_3839349

"In additional SW on BD news, our friend Kenny K. got the following information from a Lucasfilm e-mail:

"Industrial Light and Magic did go in and make many technical improvements, most notably color matching on select lightsabers shots."

So you see, what did I tell you? They lightsabers will be fixed for the Blu-Ray.
