it’s even more surprising that it was shown with the original English language track and Portuguese subtitles. I was expecting dubbing, which is commonplace in many European countries.

The reason for Portugal to have subtitles instead of dubbing is a decree during the era of Salazar’s dictatorship, when all dubbing of foreign movies was prohibited. This was done as a protectionist measure in order to support home film industry. 😃

No, no such thing is planned.
However, you can just take MKVtoolnix, load the MKV file into MKVtoolnix GUI and specify the following:

Tab: Output
Split mode: After specific timecodes
Timecodes: 01:35:22.645

This will split the MKV into two at the exact location of the Part 1/2 split.

I am actually further in this project. The end credits for Part 2 could be re-created using a combination of the part of the credits from the UK TV recording and a part of the credits from Part 1. So I need just to put this all together.

According to info from Kino:

The 4K master will be the same master, we’re looking into the yellowishness of the master and see if we can make some improvements. We’ll make further announcements later.
MGM found the M.O.S. deleted scene and offered it to us as an extra, that’s all I know.

No. That’s basically a wrong assumption of how these films were made.

They were filmed without sound recording on set, as the films were later entirely dubbed in each of the languages they were released in. For the longer Italian version, the Italian dub was recorded in Italy. For the (shorter) US version, the English dub was recorded in the USA. During filming, every actor spoke his native language.

There never was an English mix for the scenes from the Italian cut in the first place. The actors had their notes on what they spoke when they played their scenes (and as Clint Eastwood pointed out in an interview, he always kept his notes as he feared the Italians might lose them - and they surely did).

They already had the original sound mix on the extended scenes on a silent update of the current 4K Blu. They do have the original Italian mono elements. There’s no way around newly dubbed extended scenes, however.

I certainly hope the color will be more in the direction of the Italian release rather than the 4K MGM one.

To find the right fonts for the french ending of the empire strikes back was a pain because it’s rounded and I had to do the letter r and i myself because no fonts were matching exactly for them, same for the é because it was different from Satr wars and return of the Jedi, even if the worst where the é,è and à for Star wars crawling text because each accents where in different place each time it appears.

The end credits font for TESB is definitely wrong.

I see some artifacts at the logo on sideways pans (because the LD footage is strangely warped at the edges), but I quite like how you matched the colors.

Now here is the first draft of the beginning of Part 2.

Some quick notes:

• There is a transition between HD and SD footage during the intro credits. Unfortunately the HD and the LD sources have different framing, so the transition is not as seamless as I would like it.
• The last shot of Bill coming up is available in HD (without the director’s credit). I thought about using HD footage here and recreate the director’s title in HD; however, it would differ in quality with the preceding credits.

Thanks to SharkRidge, I got his script to work which looks much better than what I had here. It actually results in a softer picture, but has less disturbing artifacts. So now, I am redoing all the footage I already rendered. 😃

Thank you. I like how DrDre’s tool works, although it is harder now. On end of Part 1, there was BluRay reference footage. On Part 2, there is only the TV broadcast which has good colors. However, as these are two SD sources, they are more difficult to match pixel-wise to achieve correct color analysis. It’s a lot of trial and error for every shot now.

The first non-anamorphic DVD had the uncensored commentary. The subsequent releases were edited.
