What are your 10 best/worst character names from the SW movies?
Time
Top 10 Character Names
Han Solo - Describes his character exactly...
Luke Skywalker - Ditto
R2D2 - Rolls off the tongue nicely
Chewbacca - Anything that can be shortened into a nickname is cool.
Ugnaught - What a cool word. Also, what we called ugly chicks in grade school.
Rats Tyrell - I just love the little guy.
Darth Vader - Again, something original the likes of which had never been heard. Now, it's such a part of pop culture it's scary.
Sebulba - Just a cool word.
Greedo - Simple, and to the point.

Bottom 10

Darth Maul - Ooh...duh.
Porkins - Fat people are still people. There's just more of them to love.
Chief Chirpa - Just Sounds dumb.
Pondo Baba - I liked him better when he was just Walrusman.
Mamow Nad...er whatever - I liked him better when he was just Hammerhead.
Amidala Padme Nabarrie Skywalker - WTF?
Emperor Palpatine - Just because I've had to listen to people mispronounce it for 30 frigging years.
Bomarr Monk - I liked it better when it was just "What the hell is that spider thing called?"
Captain Tarpals - Because I don't like Gungans...Heesa in big doo doo dis time.
Mon Mothma - Chewed a hole in my Jedi costume.

Thanks - that was fun.

NES games that you haven't beat
Time
Battletoads. Or, as I like to call it, the reason why I swear too much.

Kung-Fu. That game was amazing, but when more than 2 guys were on screen throwing knives at me, I could never get the timing right and I choked.

As far as Duck Hunt, my old man got up to about Level 40 once, and that's as high as I ever saw.

Jay, have you played Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox? That is one serious game - and it has that 'old school' vibe to it. The levels are well designed, the bosses are beyond tough, but if you stick it out it rewards you with amazing depth and fluid controls. Reminds me a lot of the NES days.

There was also a lot of bad games based on movies & comics then too...

Has anyone now second guessed the prequels
Time
And yet, I'm glad that I live in a world where Lucas was allowed to make exactly the kind of films that he wanted. There's only a select few directors who have actual control over their final product in the Hollywood studio system. For better or worse, Lucas, operating outside of that system, can put on the screen exactly what he wants.

Some might argue that it's those checks and balances that can make a film better...

FYI Battlefront II
Time
Well, I played it. It's pretty much more of the same, if you're used to Battlefront. Controls feel the same, although the vehicle control is way tighter.

The map I played (Utapau) was large, and I didn't run into any situation where you get the 'Traitors will be shot' message for leaving the battlefield.

The new Clonetrooper classes are cool, but the heavy trooper's chain gun takes a second to load, then when it fires you can't control the aim. Basically it locks in on a target, including if you accidentally charge up on an ally.

I unlocked Obi-Wan for a few minutes, and he was cool. Lightsaber moves are limited, there was no advanced control like the 'Sith' game. Pretty much block and slash. Jumping feels a little bit off, but the new roll feature is cool.

The battle really drew me in, and it was pretty chaotic. It should be awesome if they manage to pull off 64 players online.

There is also a teaser vehicle level - the Battle of Coruscant. It was...breathtaking. To be in a Republic fighter and zooming down around the Droid control ships is exhilerating. It's not as easy to crash as the previous game, the control scheme feels more like the Rogue Squadron series.

This game will be a must buy for Star Wars fans, but it doesn't come close (at least in demo form) to Battlefield II. If they tidy a few things up for the November release we should be in for a treat.

However, and this is a big one. Why Lucasarts didn't release this as a 360 launch title is beyond me. You could have squeezed way more into the game and the improved graphics would have been welcome. This just seems now like an extension of the original - almost an expansion pack.

It seems as though it might have been rushed to coincide with the release of 'Sith' on DVD, much as the first Battlefront was to the OT DVD's last year...

See you online...

*** The Official DigitalFreakNYC Release Thread*** (SW, Indy + Others!)
Time
Just to chime in here - 'Raiders' was a little altered on DVD, beyond the obvious plexiglass reflection digital touch-up.

Additionally, matte lines were removed in the heavy SFX scenes, and the guide track that the boulder rolled down on was digitally removed as it was visible in the original.

The sound mix was the biggest change, and while not a hack job like 'Star Wars' was, it still is different from the theatrical release. I prefer the DVD mix as the bass has been amped up considerably. The boulder sounds huge now. I am also a purist, so I still have the 'Raiders' laserdisc with the original sound mix.

FYI Battlefront II
Time
Just bought it, didn't try it yet, but here's some cool info.

Once you get a certain amount of kills, you have the option to play as a Jedi/Sith for about a minute or so. There are new character classes such as medics and covert ops.

It looks like this is the one guys. The ability to get in and out of spacecraft? Awesome stuff.

It will be available for PC, Xbox, POS2, and PSP. Not sure if an XB360 version is in the works.

I didn't know that Battlefront I is the best selling Star Wars game of all time, until I read it today...

Maybe I'll post my impressions here later once I've played the demo.

What is your favorite film of the six?
Time
Here's why Star Wars '77 is the perfect movie.

The pacing is text-book. It never gets the credit is deserves for its' screenplay. You could set a watch to that thing. It follows the classical story-telling arc perfectly. Everything works with it. You don't even need 'Empire' or 'Jedi' to make it more perfect.

Any screenwriter worth their salt will tell you that you basically have ten pages to hook the reader, and ultimately the viewer. Star Wars '77 does it in the first two pages.

There's never a dull moment in it. Now, the '97 SE/04 DVD completely destroyed the pacing - the Jabba scene throws it off, as does the Bigg's scene.

You know, why the hell can't Lucas release a version of the film where you can have the option to watch it with or without the additions? I'm happy to have the fan preservation sets, so it wouldn't even bug me if the 'official '77 Star Wars' had the CGI effects - so long as the edit was the same as the original.

Maybe with HD-DVD or Blue-Ray (whichever wins out) we'll finally get that option. If Star Wars taught me anything it's that optimism wins out...

Episode I - Manga Comic.
Time
The Star Wars Manga were imported and reprinted by Dark Horse comics a few years ago. I sold my set on Ebay a while back.

I had the complete OT (4 issues for each film) and TPM (2 issues.) TPM was neat because the covers, when put together, would give you the exact location of the Well of The...er, I mean they formed a really cool picture.

'Star Wars' was cartoony, as was ESB. 'Jedi' was awesome, mostly because it was hyper violent. When Luke ignited his sabre on the sand skift, he went apeshit! The Weequay guys were literally sliced in half, and this was all illustrated in that wonderfully exaggerated manga style.

TPM pretty much followed the plot of the film, and wasn't quite as good as the OT, but a good read nonetheless.

There is a torrent of these floating around, and to my knowledge no manga of AOTC or ROTS was released, either here or in Japan.

Here's a few examples...Ben Kenobi is off the hook because he looks like a Kurosawa character...

Oh you dirty liar - you're one of them!

How about Beru's Blue Milk? Secret family recipe, but damn it would be tasty. Kind of like the milk leftover from Booberry cereal. That is, if I could get Booberry cereal anymore. I live in Canada. We just got cable last week.

Sometimes do you feel like you should give up on the cause?
Time
I think it is really important right now to separate the 'Star Wars' as a brand name from the 'Star Wars' as a film series.

Lucasfilm Ltd. is a major corporation with hundreds of divisions, unfortunately, one of them happens to be a licensing division which George Lucas has little to no involvement in. Does anyone really believe that George Lucas wakes up in the middle of the night and says, "We should make Star Wars Transformers!"? I sure don't.

It's become too easy to blame the "failures" of the film series on the licensing division of Lucasfilm. Let's get back to basics here.
