I just don't understand it at all. I mean, clearly there were thousands of people willing to spend over $500 for a product, and they only provided enough for hundreds.

Sorry, maybe my math is off, but 1000x$500 seems like a shitload of more money than 100x$500.

I have yet to hear a good reason as to why I had to take the day off of work, spend my morning driving around, wasting gas and time, only to be bummed out for the rest of the day.

I'm not even sure I want one anymore...

Before I get a lecture on supply & demand and the genius of marketing, allow me to vent for one minute.

Who does Microsoft presume to be that they can rob people of time? I left my house early to get a 360 on launch day, and was turned away at 8 different stores because they were sold out.

So there's 6 hours of my life given to Xbox 360 which I'll never get back.

Further, retailers are total assholes. I stood in front of a store in the freezing cold for an hour before an employee came out and said, "Despite the fact that we advertised the system, we got one in." So the guy in the front of the line was happy, but the 20 behind were downright mutinous.

It's just not fair - the industry is now being run by pre-orders, and they can't even fill those. So I trek all over the place like a frigging idiot looking for one of these things, in everything from big box retailers to mom & pop stores, and I see boxes of them behind the counter - all for pre-orders.

Lesson learned I guess, but mark my words - this outrage will bite Microsoft in the ass. Poorly played Big M.

Don't know if anyone has seen this and posted it before, but this is really rad.

It's an NES-ified cover project, whereby these dudes cover contemporary music using the NES's audio system.

Check out Zep's Kasmir - it's badass. Coldplay's Yellow is amazing, too...

Exactly. His insulation from the "real world" over the last decade has turned him, well, weird. I perceive a sort of akwardness in him, like he's lacking social skills or something.

Dude, you should see PGR3 in motion. It's beautiful.

Honestly, I was a doubter. I flip-flopped on whether I wanted one or not, I still love my Xbox so I figured I could squeeze some life out of her yet.

After today, no way. You're in for a treat.

Now I just have to figure out what game to get (package deal). I'm torn because I haven't read a review of PD2 yet, but have heard really great things about Kameo. Also, I've heard that the Xbox Live Marketplace is amazing and some of the games for donwload are great.

It's a good time to be a gamer! First thing I'm downloading is Gauntlet - here's my quarters, I call the Dwarf.

I hate it when people put down his use of CG, becuase he is the one who basically invented most special effects in the first place. He used them in the OT, but no one complained. No one said "Those special effects have gone to his head and he can't tell a story."

Just a quick response, AWK, but in my opinion George invented a company where some highly talented individuals improved on the artistry which had come before (ie: Harryhausen). So, it's not quite right to say he invented special effects, although his influence on them is obvious.

Also, I seem to recall a couple of critics, notably Paulin Kael (correct my memory, please, if I'm wrong) whose review of 'Star Wars' saw through all of the smoke and mirrors and accused Lucas of being the very technological terror he was warning people against. Praise for the effects was definately not universal...

Just thought of something...

Hmm...interesting thought.

One difference is that the original games are still readily available, often included as 'bonus' content on game discs.

Another difference is that the technology of video games is ever evolving - our expectations of games and the experience has changed every month.

With cinema, the tool and the product have essentially stayed the same for decades. I think people are a bit more reticent to accept change in cinema than they are with video games. The format of video games changes daily, and with film, it's stayed the same.

But good post.

Sometimes do you feel like you should give up on the cause?

Lucas was a skilled director, and a guy with some really interesting things to say...

THX-1138 was a great film, full of rich themes and interesting ideas. It was highly stylized, but at the same time the film really had something to say.

American Graffiti was the same thing. I defy anyone to watch the scene where Dreyfus is debating with Ron Howard and Toad about leaving for college and not feel the teen anguish, the uncertainity of the future we have all faced.

You see, Lucas used to make movies that made you think and feel. Then he made his little Trilogy of films. Star Wars was a sort of extension of Graffiti, a thematic relative - the youth yearning escape. It's a theme that worked in Wizard of Oz and countless films since.

But somewhere along the line, I think Lucas got too comfortable. There was no pressure on him, no suffering, and great art comes out of suffering. He was given free reign and I think it shows. The preqels made it obvious that he was a victim of his own machine and way too at ease. 'Phantom Menace' was just lazy filmmaking and on the nose.

I guess what I'm getting at is that Star Wars wasn't a fluke. Lucas had talent to be sure, and I think if he went the opposite route - personal films instead of blockbusters - we could be talking about him in a totally different manner...

Was that really the first Death Star in ROTS?

Okay, enough bullshit Adam. Everyone knows you've recently seen 2001 because you talk about it all the time.

I'm going to play the nice guy here for a change, and cut you some slack. What can I say? It's the fucking holidays and you've caught me at a weak moment.

You're forgiven for your ignorance, you're still a kid growing up. I can dig that. You seem like a genuine kid who at least may be interested in film, so here's what you're going to do.

Go out this weekend and rent some Kubrick films. I think you should see them in this order:

Paths of Glory - Great film about taking a stand against authority in the face of atrocity.
Spartacus - Hands down on of the greatest films ever.
Dr. Strangelove - Very, very, poigniant - especially today.
Barry Lyndon - It's boring, but did you know Kubrick invented a camera lens to register actual candlelight in film?
Full Metal Jacket - Put aside the praise it's received for a couple of hours, and watch it critically.
Eyes Wide Shut - Watch this if you need to know what I meant when I said he was overrated.

I would also suggest Lolita and Clockwork Orange, but I'm not too sure you're emotionally ready for those yet.

Let me know what you think.
