Please respect the opinion of those that would like a version of Raiders that hasn't been retouched by ILM and Lowry, as I would never dream of asking you to like it.
Thanks for understanding.

There are some really annoying cuts that conformed to the TV version. Here's what is bad about it:
Here's what is good about it:
Wonder if anyone would be willing to take this on...?

One of the Brothers Hildebrandt, Tim, has passed away on June 11th from complications due to diabetes.
Many of you will instantly recognize the name of one of the creators of the iconic Star Wars poster which hung in many of our bedrooms in the 70's and 80's, and others will recognize the man from his art - which has been used in countless DVD replacement covers by many here.
At any rate, an important figure in the Star Wars mythos is gone but not forgotten...

Edit - TFN is spewing their typical "one with the Force" crap, so for a more fitting tribute, which is where I learned of the news, go here:

-The swearing is either replaced by an overdub, or muted. Instead of Indy telling Belloq, "Son of a bitch," the word "bitch" is gone, just implied, as is the aforementioned "God damned partner" line by Marion.
-The effects and gaffes are all consistent with a pre-2003 DVD version.
-The violence is still...uh...violent. Yes, the German Mechanice blood splatter is still present.
So, as near as I can tell with an incomplete download, the only thing different from the DVD is the swearing, the 2.0 sound, and the occasional break for commercials. Hopefully they aren;t too jarring or have too many frames cut so it can be all edited together.
It looks absolutely gorgeous, though. The film grain is present, so it has a real vintage 1981 35mm look to it, but with HD clarity if that makes any sense at all...

I can confirm that it is the US television edit, pre-2003 DVD remastering. So, in effect, it is a little bit different than the official release.
For example, after the Raven Bar fight scene, Marion says "I'm your NEW DAMN partner," as opposed to "God Damned partner" in the theatrical cut. This is consistent with the TV cut which featured much of the swearing removed (including German) and replaced by an alternate "clean" track.
Honestly, I'm a little bit dissappointed because despite the fact that this look brilliant, there are cuts for commercials and the edit conforms to TV.
The good news is that the ABC watermark logo isn't burned in like the 720p version, and the matte lines, boulder guide tracks and other "gaffes" are visible. So, in essence, this is close to the theatrical version with no digital alterations, but it is edited for TV.
I'm not sure if there is any of the violence removed, I seem to remember the Flying Wing sequence edited in the 80's TV version with the blood splatter gone after the German Mechanic gets hit by the prop. We'll see once the whole file is downloaded and I'll report back in with all of the changes.
I guess this qualifies for a fan preservation after all, eh?

Also, I want to be very clear in this thread - I never once postulated that it would be released as a DVD, I just figured like-minded folks here would either know something about it, or want it for themselves.
Thank you, Jay, for being the voice of reason yet again - and apologies to anyone who mistook my original intent.

It's not the years...it's the mileage.

Look, I wasn't trying to start something if that's what you're implying. I'm old enough to have seen 'Raiders' a dozen times or so during its' original release, and I was more than a little upset that Lucas couldn't keep his damned infernal tinkering paws off of it when it was released on DVD.
This has come up here before, and I have no desire to rehash or start a flame war, but suffice to say I want an unaltered version of 'Raiders' with warts and all. If this doesn't fall under the purvue of this site, than so be it. I saw no harm in asking if anyone had this, or had seen it.

The actual film was not changed, the titles remain as they were in 1981, rather the packaging was altered on VHS (?) and DVD.
There is probably nothing to make it a candidate for a fan preservation project, unless it turns out that the snake reflection, boulder guide track etc... are still there. The content of the film, edit, picture, sound etc. are still as they always were in the 2003 DVD's, but since this broadcast predates the DVD, it may have none of the digital enhancements levied for the release - in which case, would make a dandy hi-def 25th Anniversary theatrical preservation project. Or I could be splitting hairs...I just want to see this thing.

Yes, you're right in theory. I guess you culd argue that if it is free of the alterations (although) minimal, that Lowry & ILM made to Raiders, that this constitutes a "different" version. I know it's a fine line, though...

Now, not really sure what to do with this once DL is complete, but it's awesome looking.
Something interesting about it though, is that it was aired pre-DVD, so I'm assuming it doesn't have any of the enhancements Lowry Digital & ILM did to it. Also, the soundmix is 2.0.
Can you imagine this thing with the theatrical mix (reportedly identical to current DVD mix) with a picture of this quality, without the digital cleanups. Mana from heaven, I tells you.

Apparently Raiders aired once on Paramount’s HDTV channel, and, as the screen grab below attests to, it looks stunning and well above the resolution of the standard DVD release.
Does anyone have this? Supposedly it was floating around on Usenet.

I've been thinking about it for a while now, and I have come to the conclusion that it's time for me to put Star Wars to bed. I've spent 29 years of my life watching, collecting and talking about Star Wars - with really nothing to show for it.
I'm sure I will end up buying the DVD's in September in spite of myself, but I think I need to spend more time on the things that really matter instead of devoting so much time to a largely unrewarding allegiance to a fictional film series.
I loved the films when I was a kid, but I'm not a kid anymore so there really is no point. I don't get excited about Star Wars anymore, and am left with a bittersweet taste in my mouth when I think about Star Wars.
At any rate, I have a new Jedi coming into the world in the next month and perhaps someday will relive the youthful excitement that Star Wars gave me through my children, but for now, goodbye.
Thanks everyone for the good times and good conversation. I wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavours.
Cheers,
Cassidy

-Obi-Wan doesn't "remember" the Droids because he is covering up. Obi-Wan's words say one thing, but his face says another.
-Obi-Wan told Luke that his Father wanted him to have his lightsaber because it was less painful than the truth, and a convenient plot device to get Luke a lightsaber.
-What do you want? Obi-Wan doing backflips when he's like, 80 years old? The Jedi/Sith are aging and less powerful than they were during I-III. No leap of faith there.
-Luke never got tongued by Leia you over-exaggerator you - it was a kiss on the mouth, but moreso to make Han jealous. Mission accomplished.
-Luke beat Vader in V because he gave in to his anger for a brief moment, and then retracted his feelings when he saw that he was becoming just like his Father. If you want visual proof look at the cut - close up of Vader's severed hand, close up of Luke's. Pretty compelling, no?
-Obi-Wan isn't a liar to claim that he tried to train Anakin. He promised Qui-Gon he would continue Ani's training and he did. Just because it wasn't shown in any of the films doesn't mean it didn't happen. The dialogue and forced chemistry between Obi-Wan and Anakin is supposed to convey the Master-Student/Friend relationship.
-What you call errors, I call depth.

Star Wars looks okay, but these are such a hack job...I don't know, maybe I could get a job as a graphics designer at LFL because I can notice at least 5 things wrong with each cover from a design standpoint.
Star Wars
Tarkin is so damn blue that he blends in. (I know he was on the original poster, but not that bad)
The shot they chose for Leia is undynamic - it looks like she's posing with the blaster, not firing it.
Chewie has that "wait, where am I now?" look, which, I believe is a promo shot from Empire.
The Luke and Han shots aren't even from the film, take a look at their haircuts - this is small, but it bugs me.
WTF is that coming out of the end of Luke's blaster?
The big blue Photoshop glow...ugh. It's used to cover up bad work, like erase lines.
Empire
Vader looks like he's about to swat a Snow Speeder off of Han's shoulder
There's nothing interesting going on, on the cover.
The character shots they chose makes them all look bored. What are they all looking at?
Again, the purple flare around everyone is amateur.
If this was trying to re-create a poster, I don't know which one.
Although the Luke head shot is larger, the Han shot pops out more, leading the casual viewer to assume that this is Han's story, which it clearly is not.
Jedi
Look at all that empty space.
Although it does try to re-create the poster, the Leia slave girl shot is sort of out of place.
The cover is unbalanced - if you draw a line diagonally from top right to bottom left, the upper left portion is sparse and doesn;t have anything visually to balance the "shot" out.
What's Wicket doing between Han's legs?
Anyway, I'm being nitpicky, but these covers are quick, amateurish, and trust me, the artisans here have done way better.
