You know how certain games are must haves for a system?

I'd say Wario Ware (based on the reviews) and Zelda are the "must haves" for the Wii.

This might be fun. Using Nintendo only, or it could get too muddled, what are your so-called must haves?

NES - Super Mario Bros.
SNES - Super Mario World
N64 - TIE: Ocarina or Goldeneye.
Gamecube - Metroid Prime
Wii - Twilight Princess
GB - Tetris
DS - Mario Kart (even though it doesn't make as an effective use of the hardware as say, Elite Beat Agents).

Rumour has it that Microsoft will be releasing a new SKU of the Xbox 360 sometime soon...

New Xbox 360?

Apparently it will have a quieter drive, larger hard drive and HDMI out.

It's still cloud talk, but if this pans out I'm so going to be pissed. THIS is why I am increasingly becoming a Nintendo Fan Boy. THIS is why it pissed me off that Microsoft is potentially blurring the line between PC and console gaming...so what? Maybe certain games will need the larger capacity hard drive, or a faster drive, or hell, even a built in HD-DVD drive.

I'm telling you, they rushed this thing out of the gate too soon to beat the others. Don't get me wrong, I loves me some Dead Rising, Halo, Gears Of War etc...but this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Honestly, were it not for Banjo Threeie I don't think I would keep the system if a beefier one came out. I might just say "Fuck you Microsoft" and sell all of my shit and get an iBook or something. I don't take this lightly either - I froze my ass off overnight to get that damn thing. I wasn't alone - the least they could do would be honour us somehow...although I know that won't happen.

Sorry about the rant.

Actually I'm reasonably certain that it's out on the VC in Japan.

Don't know...I just finished it about 3 weeks ago for the I-don't-know-how-many-times, and the control scheme is so damn tight on the N64 that I can imagine playing it any other way.

Same goes for Twilight Princess. I just finished playing for a couple of hours and I could never imagine playing it without the Wii controls. Only thing that pisses me off about it is not being able to lock the Z-Target and having to constantly press the button. That's why I liked Ocarina - you could lock on and then just circle your enemy and look for an opening. I miss that.

I guess my point is that certain games are designed to take full advantage of a console's control scheme, and some of it must get lost in translation. Having said that, I only spent about an hour playing Ocarina Master Quest on the GC and couldn't really get used to it.

I'm sure I'll eventually break down and buy Ocarina for the Wii whenever it comes out in North America...although I have to admit, Twilight Princess is really giving it a run for its' money. Were it not for Ocarina's soundtrack, I don't know...

I do not have a Wii, but I must say I have been very impressed with all I have heard about it since its release. Especially the whole ability to play all sorts of classic games on it. But there are a few things I have been curious about. First off, how are the games obtained? Are they downloaded onto a hard drive? Or are they floating out on a network? If they are actually saved to your Wii itself, what happens when your disk gets full, assuming you could dl enough game to fill it, would you have to get rid of some to get more? Or if the games are kept on a network, what happens when the Wii becomes obsolete and Nintendo decides it is no longer worth keeping the Wii network online. Will all your paid for classic games be unaccessible? Also does it bother anyone else having to repurchase games you have already at one point paid the full price for? I would not like that. For me to repurchase my entire NES and SNES collection (or even just the few I consider "must have" games) at five bucks or so a game would really take a chunk out of my wallet. But the whole concept as a whole is really cool. And if these classic games purchased for use on the Wii were to be usable on the next Nintendo system as well, that would make them all the more valuable.

All of the classic games available to download and play on the Wii are stored on the 512mb internal Flash memory. The games can be backed up on SD cards, but they are unplayable from the card itself. The games you download are locked to your system, and you must transfer the game back to your Wii console to play them.

In the event that you need to erase any games you download, you can re-download them free of charge whenever you want. Nintendo tracks which games have been downloaded to the Wii console, resolving any issues of "losing" games for good. Essentially, once bought you own the games in perpetuity.

It doesn't bother me that I've spent money on games I've already owned in the past for two reasons. One, it's nice not to have a clutter of systems. The downside of this is that you're not using the original controller to play the games, but the Classic Controller is so similar to the SNES controller that it's negligible. It's hard to explain, but it evokes the NES, SNES and N64 controller all at the same time.

Second, if you have a decent AV setup, the games look better than they would on the original console. Super Mario Bros. looks a hell of a lot better on the Wii hooked up to an LCD TV with the component cables, than regular RCA cables with the original NES. So, that's a benefit if you care about that sort of thing.

Personally I still like to have the boxed copy of the game on the original system it was intended for - you won't catch me playing 'Ocarina of Time' on the Wii, the original setup was just too perfect, but it's still nice to have the option to not have to drag out all of your vintage systems.

As for your last question, well, Nintendo could essentially "future proof" the games you've downloaded by implementing a Virtual Console into their next system, but who the hell knows what that is going to be.

I'd much rather have the ability to transfer the games over to a portable gaming device like the DS - now THAT would be cool.

The floodgates would be open were Nintendo to offer an online service similar to Xbox Live. Maybe online multiplayer without voice chat, I don't know...

I've been turned off of XBL due to the smacktalk, racism, sexism and general poor behaviour of the majority of the "gamers" on the service. Microsoft's answer is to use the feedback feature and mute voices, but one shouldn't have to do that to have a fun online experience.

With Nitendo's decidely more PG oriented image, I can't imagine them everoffering a service with the robust features of XBL...S'okay, I'm content to just download old...I mean classic games.

Speaking of which, anyone pick up Donkey Kong Country?

I was being very much tongue in cheek

No bones about it, I'm a Wii360 gamer - but what Sony does well, they do extremely well, so I'll give them their props where due. But their promised online service is at best a sub-par version of XBL, and at worst, a little behind the release rate of Nintendo's "online" service...

Like I said, it's not that great now but it has wonderful potential.

At least we know they'd be willing to listen to Wii gamer voices. Microsoft has a similar program with periodic surveys, and have taken into account feeback from Major Nelson's site, and Sony has...well...Syphon Filter is available for download.

That would be really cool since the game was translated into English and made ready to release though it never was. That would be fantastic if Nintendo would get in the habit of releasing unreleased games for this thing. How great would it be to see StarFox 2 for the SNES... not likely I know, but with the Wii channel the possibility is there.

If Nintendo is in this for the long haul, which they are, given the 4 year or so life span of a console, they will inevitably have to start releasing some hard-to-find or unreleased classics at the current release rate of the VC.

I had to download it from the Wii Shop Channel... Strange. Heh, I sent a question suggestion "Should the SNES game 'Earthbound' be released on the Virtual Console System?" with the answers being "YES!" and "Maybe."

Sweet! I'm so voting YES if your question ever gets posted.

It never made sense to me that Nintendo would include Nes as a playable character in SSB and then not give Earthbound it's lonmg overdue day.

got them and added them, thanks alot, will go in nicely with the TOPPS card scans.

Although you can't really see it in the picture of the cover, there's a reason I put "And more!" in the DVD-ROM section on the back. I knew some cool stuff was going to pop up.

What if the OOT was made Public Domain?

The whole point of that little "they dont exist to me" stance of Lucas' wasn't that he didn't care, but that he very much did care, that is cared that they remain unavailable. Making them easily and freely accessible to everyone is the antithesis to Lucas' entire philosophy, especially when hundreds of companies will begin selling them, as happens in public domain fare (eg Night of the Living Dead, Three Stooges, etc., commonly seen in VHS>DVD transfers in the dollar bin). In order to properly present a film it takes a few grand investment in a decent transfer and often restoration work. The best case scenario is if a company like Criterion aquired the home video rights to it, but of course they charge about $50 per video because they always invest heavily into restoration.

Basically, making it public domain would hurt us in every way and benefit no one. What we do now (preserving, etc.) is generally accepted by legal standards even though we are technically making infractions, so legitimacy has never been a problem; none of us ever sells are stuff. Making it public domain would change nothing because the copies we distribute are ones transfered by Lucasfilm and Fox, and thus are their properties; just as Night of the Living Dead is public domain, you would still be sued for pirating Anchor Bay's DVD transfer of that film. In order to get around the legal angle you would have to obtain or purchase a print and transfer it yourself, which would be costly to start with and for sure it would need major restoration work done. Companies that do this professionally spends tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of man hours getting this stuff right. Making it public domain would possibly allow a company willing to invest some cash to produce a pretty decent transfer that is an improvement over the GOUT but we would still have to pay money for it and would get sued for distributing this particular transfer. And all companies would be working with would be release prints anyway, no intermediate or o-neg's like Lucasfilm used for the SE and GOUT since those original material are still protected by the production company.

Bingo. The funny thing is, despite the fact that mostly all of us have at least one or another of the preservation projects sitting on our DVD shelves, we've likely all bought the 2004 discs, the 2006 discs and whatever comes out down the line.

No point in making these public domain the stave off "bootleggers." Bootleggers who are more than willing to buy the product legitimately, ironically enough.

What the fuck??? : George is definitely gone "bye bye"

I agree with both of your replies to a degree, but what I'm getting at is that the greatness of ESB is forever being attributed to Kershner, but without Lucas' contributiuon of the characters, situations and overall design, Kersh would have had nothing to work with. That is why, in my estimation, it's not really fair to bash Lucas because he didn't "make" ESB.

Lord knows there are a lot of other things to bash him for, but I don't think the fact that he didn't direct ESB should be one of them.

The negativity around Star Wars now really turns me off of it, but I'm thinking I'm alone in my opinion so I'll shut up!

He is just pissed and jealous, because Kershner did what he couldn't. Make a good film without slapstick in your face fart and poop jokes.

It is kind of fitting though - there's five Star Wars sequels and the one that's almost universally thought of as the best, the most serious, has the best acting, best cinematography, etc - is one that George didn't direct.

By no means am I a blind, accepting fanboy, but enough is enough.

Who the hell do you guys think thought up the stories in the first place?

Who created the characters? The ships? The planets? The tech?

George Lucas created the Millenium Fucking Falcon, and that's cool. He created TaunTauns. That's cool. He created Jabba. That's cool. Carbonite? Lucas. Pod Races (arguable the best part of EPI)? Lucas. The Clone Battle in EPII? Lucas.

It's not that I don't recognize the issues with Lucas or his filmmaking, but it's become so en vogue to bash him by saying "Well, he didn't do Empire or Jedi so he must suck." I call bullshit.

Yeah, Kersh and Marquand were great directors, and they helped forge amazing films, but their role was to interpret the scripts, block the scenes, coax the actors (who, let's face the facts, didn't win any Oscars for them) and compose the shots. They didn't make or break Star Wars. They were along for the ride. A ride that Lucas created - lock, stock, and smoking barrel.

It's the internet whining and Expanded Universe marketing that is killing Star Wars, not Lucas.

EDIT - @ Marvolo - where are the poop jokes and slapstick in Star Wars - sorry, EPIV: A New Hope?

By the way, I heard that the Wii had this new channel on the latest update, but I haven't got any new channel after I did the update. Anyone knows about this?

Yes, there is a new Voting Channel, which is surprisingly cool - not just for now, but for the potential it could have later on (ie: What VC game should we release next week, majority rules).

You need to enable it in the Wii settings though, for it to appear. I'm not sure why it didn't just pop up, I was puzzled at first too.
