General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

We all know what a prestige-whore he is (doing interviews with bill moyers, loaning out star wars props to the Smithsonian). methinks he couldn't resist a chance being seen as king-maker to one of the best filmmakers alive.

Any knowledgeable film fan can tell you the only ability lucas shares with spielberg, coppola and scorsese is that he can pee standing up (to paraphrase charles barkley). But lucas knows the power of images. not long after the oscars, some apologist took a picture of lucas with spielberg, copolla and scorsese and titled it Cinema's Mt. Rushmore!!!

Somehow Lucas MADE Bill Moyers interview him and the Smithsonian display his stuff? Or could we look at it as Lucas graciously did those things since he already has the prestige as the director of two of the greatest movies of all time, and the most successful independent filmmaker of all time, and a technological visionary?

And he somehow cleverly manipulated it so that a picture was taken of him and his peers (who he just presented an award with) when they were all together! Scandalous! Damn tricky apologists! This is unheard of!!!!!!

Aw carp!

I knew it didn't sound right. Enlighten me?

In my defense, English isn't my native language, nor my second for that matter lol!

For a non-native speaker I'd accept incorrect grammar, word usage, or even congegation of verb tenses... but NO ONE misuses an internet meme! No on!

In the end people remember good movies. Bad movies fade away.

That's why people always talk about the Golden Days of Hollywood. People remember "Casablanca" not "Shhh Beware the Octopus!"

People still look at Bela Lugosi's Dracula as the icon. Some film enthusiasts recall the lesser later movies in the Universal Monster series. Star Wars will be much the same way.

They could package the blu-ray of Dracula with a picture of Abbot and Costello on the front, but in the end people will remember Lugosi.

THERE IS NOTHING PHOTOREALISTIC about that two-headed pod-race announcer!! come to think of it, there is so much crap in the PT thats not photorealistic. Another garbage scene in TPM is the Naboo ground battle! pixar nowadays looks better - but you dont hear them saying any of the animated features are meant to be photorealistic.

the clone troopers in AOTC were obviously CGI to me even back in 2002. most likely what cost ILM the oscar that year.

if photorealism was truly the standard for using CGI in the PT, then one can easily argue that the PT had far worse effects from 1999-2005 than the OT did from 1977-1983. and its not even close.

+1000. For me personally, this is one of the more frustrating things about George's attitude. The special effects in the OT helped emmerse you in the universe, whereas the effects in the PT just remind you that you are only watching a movie.

I'm more pro-CGI than most members of this board, but I think the best/worst example of what you're talking about is the new musical number in Jabba's palace.

The two EXTREME close ups of the singing aliens mouths are so painfully there just to show us how proud they were of the CG (that hasn't aged well). If that was a puppet or even an actor, you would NEVER do a shot loooking down at the uvula. The whole point is "Hey, this CG cartoon has a uvula! Isn't that awesome!"

OT Blu Rays: Buying it Used
Time

I gotta say, the whole "I don't want to give money to X" idea has alway struck me as extremely silly somehow.

"I'll see Transformers 2, but I'm buying a ticket to Invictus and sneaking in." seems to me both a little dishonest but mostly poseur-ish.

If you want to own the blu-rays, that makes you the sort of person who wants to own the blu-rays. Where you buy them is irrelevant, except as an excuse if you're really defensive about your movie choices.

Yeah, I own the Spice Girls's entire discography, but I bought them used, so I'm still cool. :)

So what does "This project is being moved to make better use of available web resources" mean then? I really can't see why you would want to move this project from here. Without the guys here i wouldn't have been able to accomplish half of what i did with "Revisited". Maybe a better explanation would be nice, especially when so many here have already had an input into this project since you opened this thread.

Re-read that thread.

It's odd. Up until he decided to leave, anti-matter seemed like a pretty cool dude. Then all of a sudden he went all paranoid-rude-stinky.

I'd understand if he'd been in some kind of flame-war, or released his edit here and people didn't like it. But this whole thing just boggles my mind. I desperatly want to understand, but it's a vortex of madness and rudeness.

i think the emperors shuttle should be something COMPLETELY new, maybe something more yacht-ish like the solar sailor dooku uses?

SSWR did some mockups which follow a similar vein to your ideas, such as the stormtrooper armour and the lightspeed ending. did you ever see any?

Empy should definitly rock a totally delux shuttle. I just don't know how to do that.

Never saw SSWR's mock up. Was it in this thread?

Actually, I'm not even convinced the '2nd NO' is actually voiced by James Earl Jones. It almost sounds like that 'Qui-Gon Jin NO', they used in AotC. Anonye else got that impression after hearing it a few times? (And no, I don't like it).

Listened to the FORCECAST this week. They talked to Matt Wood who swore up and down it was James Earl Jones, but was oddly evasive about when and for what it was recorded, except that it's not new, it's from the archives.

It's easy to imagine JEJ doing 8 or 9 takes of screaming "nooooooooooo" that eventually just for variety he'd do one that was wierd and not cool. And of course that's the one LFL went with.

Darth Lucas Strikes Again!

The thing that kinda bugs me is that this was a bar, and they weren't charging admission. As far as I know, you don't need permission for such a thing. If I walk into a video store, there is always a movie playing there, and movie stores, whether big chains like Blockbuster or your local indie, don't seek permission. Bars show television shows, news, sports, and sometimes order pay-per-view events (and sometimes charge cover too) in order to attract business. Restaurants play music sometimes for their customer's convenience. So do coffee shops. Dance clubs base their entire business off playing copyrighted material for free for the pleasure of their patrons, and make big bucks off the drinks and cover that come with it.

Is this really so much different? Stores like HMV even play movies while you shop. When I was a kid, there was a restaurant-store called Sci-Fi World that was basically a comic book, novel, magazine, collectible and RPG store with a sci-fi theme, and they had a hamburger restaurant with a big, giant projector screen that would show movies. The first time I was there, Star Wars was playing, and other times it was Star Trek or Superman and the like. Stores will play shows in their display windows, dentists sometimes have television and videos to entertain the kids.

In a way, stuff like this is industry norms. I've been to bars where they screen movies while you sit and talk and drink, and you can watch the movie or sit further away from the area its playing and have your own space. It's really nothing illegal. You shouldn't need permission every time you display something that is copyrighted.

Technically speaking, it would therefore be illegal for me to bring my Blu-ray over to your house and show you the new Star Wars set. Playing your DVDs at a house party would be illegal public display. But of course it's not, but when you start charging money for it then maybe it would become as such. But is this different from the entire dance club industry, or bars with cover? I'm not sure.

I'm not sure if I comfortable with the idea in society that you have to pay money or get permission every time you want to freely display something that's owned by a company. It didn't use to be that way, and it's still largely not, but I feel like more and more there is this acceptance of it.

Bars pay a special fee for PPVs. I know that WrestleMania in a bar costs the bar $5000 (last year at least). There are different rules for regular TV.

Technically Blockbuster video stores were not allowed to play movies because of copyright issues, but had special liscensed screener tapers.

DJs and dance clubs do need to pay a liscense on the music they play (legally). So technicaly do restaurants, malls, and wedding receptions. Its the ASCAP and BMI.

A house party to watch Star Wars is totally legal (as long as you don't charge admission). Schools, oil rigs, prisons, churches, bars, and restaurants are not considered private home usage. When I worked the front desk at my college dorms, we screened specially licensed movies, because as a public venue we couldn't just show whatever we felt like.

Looked back at my old "How I'd Redo ROTJ" post, which was full of impossible dreams. With the new deleted scenes, some don't seem so impossible anymore.

JABBAS PALACE-

Then Luke shows up, all mysterious. I thought some kind of visual to cue that Luke had changed was in order.

After the Barge goes boom, the lost Sandstorm scene is inserted. It provides another set, making the film feel bigger, and gives Han and Lando a moment to acknowledge Han's forgiving him.

The "Luke Builds a Lightsaber" scene serves the purpose of a much more mysterious introduction.

Could the sandstorm scene, with bastardized audio stolen from the actual movie, loud wind effects and music, be reinserted? Who thinks it could work?

ENDOR BATTLE:

More Ewoks die. Not a bloodbath, but we should see some get shot. We should also see some stab Stormtroopers with spears and poison blowdarts.

The shuttle the heroes came in had a small force of maybe 40-50 people shoved in the back like a Normandy lander. Let them get some action.

SPACE BATTLE:
THere should be at least one Hero Shot of the Falcon flying with all guns blazing, blasting TIE fighters. Footage was shot of soldiers in the Falcon's guns firing away. That should be used.
Footage was also shot of Madine's death, as well as a female XWing pilot. These should go back in.

Inserting the bunker scene, the new pilot closeups, and the Falcon gunners would go a long way to making the battle feel more epic.

I'd also insert shots of Jerrjerod getting status updates (although not the subplot of blowing up Endor). Could shots from those scenes be used to replace some of the reused shots of the Death Star gunners from "Star Wars?"

I've actually reconsidered more Ewoks dying. We see two die in a short time, and one even gets the most dramatic death scene in the triology up till then (more time than Biggs, Dack, or Obi got!).

When the gang is captured by the Ewoks, empty stormtrooper armor is piled next to the cooking fire.

I might build a set in my garage to get this shot!

I wouldn't change a damn thing about the Emperor or any of the scenes of him, Vader and Luke. (except that he really needs a nicer shuttle).

I need to learn to rotoscope, to slap a red Imperial logo on the Emp's shuttle in the big matte painting. Maybe some spinners.

ENDING

The camera pans up above the happy people, XWings drop fireworks in the sky, camera pans up to the stars, where, as the music crescendos, the AUDIENCE POV ITSELF is pulled into hyperspace as the credits roll. People cheer.

Is this possible? Any ideas of how to try making this shot?

hmmm guess you're right. between uk and us, it made more money than I thought. I missed it in the theatres cuz it was only around less than a month so it appeared to me the response was lukewarm.

It just always stuck in my mind because Robert Zemekis is the only director to have made 2 $100 million dollar movies in the same year (along with Castaway).

Info Wanted: Why go BLU - Fanedit Lover's Obligation???
Time

I went out and bought AOTC on DVD to justify owning a fan-edit to myself.

I believe that if I'm going to enjoy this product, even in a modified format, then the company that made it deserves my money.

Honestly, I hadn't considered buying the blu-rays EVER (not currently owning a blu-ray player) until this thread. Now I suppose that when I upgrade, if I plan on getting a fan-edit or preservation in Blu-Ray quality, I will indeed go buy the actual blu-ray set.

This is just a moral choice on my part.

New comment on the article from "maddog"

The Prologue was the "first" for many reasons because it's so unlike the prequels. For example, it was the first true fanedit in that category to be created on a new movie conception. I don't think it can be compared to those other edits at all. See Logan5's original review because he explains it beautifully. Anti-matter did not just splice three movies together like those before him. He gave us a completely new movie and story. All you azzholes at ot.com should stop trying to negate his work, because it's not going to have much weight outside your classless website.

Because nothing says "classy" like calling a whole forum a bunch of "azzholes."

Where do these dudes come from?

I mean, OK, they like anti-matter, and they apparently really like his edit. Whatever. But why do they all hate OT.com and FE.org? (FE<3OT) I read their message boards and couldn't even figure it out.

In regards to the comment, it should be noted that "Prologue" actually doesn't alter the story at all, it just shortens the films and presents certain plot points out of order. The only real alteration is the HEY REMEMBER ME! random shot of Dooku at the end.

Ford's problem is that he is conservative and does not take risks. He was awesome - and so not the stereotypical Harrison Ford - in The Mosquito Coast, but it tanked and he has stuck with playing heroic roles pretty much ever since.

I gotta disagree. Ford doesn't work that much, but I think he's picked lots of interesting parts between his iconic hero roles.

He's an obsessed weirdo in Mosquito Coast. He's a jerk, then a recovering patient in Regarding Henry. The villian in What Lies Beneath. He's mostly a comedic bumbler in Hollywood Homicide and Six Days Seven Nights, and he's a stuffed shirt in Morning Glory. He's was a morally ambiguous anti-hero in Blade Runner. Havent seen it yet, but wasn't he also the villain in Cowboys and Aliens?

Not being a moderator or anything, just one of the bunch speaking his brains but most of this thread seems more about the zany antics of Anti-matter and his pals, rather than the Prologue project itself.

Wouldn't it make more sense to move it to the off topic zone where that can be laughed at and roasted with total freedom rather than having it bob up and down in one of the sedate 'creative zones' of the forums (you know, the one with the Worst Edit Ideas and The Ridiculous Edit in)?

I gave a reasonable review of the project. Minimum snark.

It seems that SOMEWHERE in the fan-edit community online should have a discussion of a major project.
