Darth Maul returns!
Time

***SPOILERS IN THREAD TITLE!!****

But if you watch the show you already know, and if you don't watch the show you don't care.

Darth Maul's coming back in "The Clone Wars" cartoon.

Dave Filloni, head TCW dude said this:

“...fans can expect Darth Maul to reignite his rivalry with Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

“There’s a lot of ground that has not been covered as far as Darth Maul is concerned, so there’s a lot of room to grow with him,”

Does Maul REALLY have a rivalry with Obi? They met once, never spoke, and Obi killed him. Does Obi have a rivalry with Walrus Man from the cantina, and every battle droid he ever killed?

And as for room to grow... Maul has no background, no discernable personality, and no character traits other than looking awesome. If they revealed he loved to sing and dance, and was adopted and raised by an alcoholic Ewok, it wouldn't contradict anything. He has nothing but room to grow, and like Boba Fett, everything they do with him will lesson whatever mystique he had.

Say Goodbye to the Simpsons (UPDATE: false alarm)
Time

darth_ender said:

Now if The Simpsons were more like a soap opera, introducing new characters, introducing new plot threads and twists, tying up old ones in haste, and all the characters aging and moving on to more lucrative careers, then I would love the show again. That sounds like a recipe for hilarity!

I don't know about all that, but the Simpsons have had quite a few changes in the status quo over the years.

People died, characters dealt with death, relationships changed, people got divorced. Characters have changed and come back (Homer's brother, sideshow Bob, Marge's prom date)

For the one show on TV that has no need to ever change, I think that's a fair ammount of progress.

Extremely Silly Website: digital-fanedits.com (Was: Extremely Silly Article About Star Wars Prologue On DVD)

Just for fun, these are some of the comments about my upcoming edit...

I have seen Frink's trailer and he isn't one to be trashing fanedits. The whole "ridiculous" theme is a convenient safeguard against future criticism.

This on a website who's leader (only member?) defended his own edit with the statement "Nuts to any criticism, this ending is what I want! Lemmings!!"

Star Wars Prologue - Epic Prequel Edit (Released)
Time

TV's Frink said:

He wanted people to feel shocked or confused before continuing with Episode IV, and they are. There isn't any argument about the ending that I'm aware of. I've never read or heard anyone say that they "enjoyed" or "loved" the end of the movie. I usually hear things like "disappointing" or "confusing" or "interesting." AM might well be the only person on the planet who truly understands and enjoys his ending, but that doesn't mean the rest of us can't enjoy the other 2 hours and 50 minutes of his work.

That link takes you to an article by Antimatter that includes this:

...Viewers are more likely to enjoy my movie if they can get past their familiarity with the original prequel films. Thus, I would not recommend this edit to someone who has already embraced the prequels.

The all important Episode V reveal is again cool and meaningful because the Prologue never identifies Darth Vader.

These defenses of the ending don't strike me as particularly effective.

Interesting defense... but if this is meant for people who don't have 'familiarity' with the prequals, absolutlely nothing would make sense. Characters and situations aren't explained or even identified.

A blank slate watching this before watching SW, ESB, and ROTJ, would have no idea who Vader is, nor any reason to suspect Dooku was Vader, or Anakin. A question they may ask is "who was Dooku again?" since he does practically nothing in The Prologue.

During the reveal in ESB, the reaction would be "But how does that revelation match the Prologue I watched? I hope they make a prequal to explain it."

So anyone watching Prologue first would KNOW Obi is lying about his student Vader betraying and murdering Anakin... or at least boggled wonder who the hell is Vader, since they just watched the Prologue and he's not in it except for one nonsensical appearance in the first third.

That first defense reminds me of people saying that in AOTC Lucas wanted wooden acting, no chemistry, and bad dialogue. Because that's how serials were, or that's how teenagers talk, or because the romance was destined to fail.

The Only REAL Podcast Thread!
Time

Lately I've been listening to a lot of podcasts, and a wide range of topics, from politics to pro wrestling, Star Wars to medeival literature. Most of these are amatuer podcasts, and I never fault them for middling audio, but still many of them are just bad.

A few rules for the podcaster according to the Boost.

1- I don't care how much you like that song. DONT play the whole thing. No matter how clever of a transition it is, if I wanted to hear music, I wouldn't have downloaded your podcast. In fact, never play more than maybe 10 seconds of music.

2- If you're not a sports podcast, I don't care what ballgames you've been too, are planning on watching, or how your team is doing.

3- Start your content withing the first couple minutes. If you need to spend the first 8 min thanking people, mentioning other podcasts, explaining why you haven't podcasted in a while, or answering listener mail that doesn't relate to your podcast topic, I'm deleting your file.

4- If you can't be great, don't be long. 10-20 minutes of hearing people ramble on about a movie might be entertaining, but once it's going 30-50 min, if you're not extremely insightful and witty, you become boring.

Say Goodbye to the Simpsons (UPDATE: false alarm)
Time

One thing i cannot stand about the Simpsons the characters never age.

The kids are still kids when they should be like 40 years old by now, lol.

Yeah, that's one of the many problems with a show that's almost 25 years old. Take Skinner, for example. The guy is supposed to be in his forties, but they still say he's a "vietnam veteran". But guys who fought in Vietnam are now in their sixties, correct me if I'm wrong...

I stopped watching the Simpsons after the first couple of seasons. I had a hunch the characters wouldn't age at all

In my 20 years of watching the Simpsons, the fact the characters never age has never, ever, ever, even for a moment ever, ever struck me as a problem, nor have I spent more than an 1/8th of a second contemplating the continuity problems this brings up.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

I've always wondered about Ben's line "Who's the more foolish, the fool or the fool who follows him?". How does that fit into the scenario? Is Han the fool who's following a fool (Ben)? If so, why? He doesn't follow him at all.

I love that line.

I've always figured Ben is predicting (correctly) that Han is still going to do what Ben says regardless of calling him an old fool.

As I said before, IMO the real danger is not kids enjoying the PT, but kids convincing themselves to like the PT because they are brainwashed by going to TFN or swallowing all of Lucas' BS.

There are lots and lots of people who like th PT.

I just don't think most of them frequent TFN or listen to lots of interviews from Lucas. They just like them.

This isn't a defense of the PT. A bazillion people liked Transformers 3, and no one said they needed a website to "defend" i.

General Lamarque Is Dead.
Time

Lamarque is dead.
Lamarque! His death is the hour of fate.
The people's man.
His death is the sign we await!

On his funeral day they will honor his name.
It's a rallying cry that will reach every ear!
In the death of Lamarque we will kindle the flame
They will see that the day of salvation is near!
The time is near!
Let us welcome it gladly with courage and cheer
Let us take to the streets with no doubt in our hearts
But a jubilant shout
They will come one and all
They will come when we call!

Never seen "Breakfast at Tiffanys"

Me neither, but then why would anyone want to?

I have never seen any Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton films.

Breakfast At Tiffany's has some really fun characters, some fine performances, it moves along at a jaunty pace and the dialogue sparkles BUT Mickey Rooney's Mr Yunioshi does make for uncomfortable viewing.

Sure ethnic caricatures were commonplace back then but it does throw the whole tone of the piece out.

I wish that an scene was filmed where at the end he is revealed to not be Japanese at all but everyone in the apartment block is either blind to his obvious disguise or are just too polite to mention it.

It would really have fitted into the story.

I wish some teenagers and a talking dog pulled off his mask.
