Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Every New Years Day I host a "Watch all the Star Wars Movies!" Party. Traditionally I goes:

  • Phantom Edit (7:00 am)
  • Attack of the Phantom
  • ROTS
  • SW:R
  • ESB SE
  • ROTJ GOUT

And I always give out the DVDs of the fan edits to people who show up.

This year I switched it up and showed the DeSpecialized OT. It went over great and I actualyl had to burn a second set when two people were arguing over who got to take the DVDs.

It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P

The studios do distribute a load of crap films.

If this film is crap and I can't say it is because I haven't seen it but if it is I think the studio reaction (assuming that Lucas hasn't pulled that out of his bucket of chicken) is more to do with the financial downturn than race.

It does seem very cheap of George to play the race card.

What about the first major motion picture about gay airmen in World War 2 George?

Racism is a bigger social issue but cinematographically it's kind of covered, where as with gay American war heroes, male and/or female, there's a lot of room for coverage in there.

With conscription there must have been thousands of gay service men and women during the war.

So much so that even a bad film would be considered at least a step in the right direction.

Studios are very frightened of any film that might be labeled a 'black movie.'

Robert Townsend said the studios delayed the relase of "Meteor Man" because it was a 'black movie' and they figured all the black people we seeing 'Menace 2 Society' that month.

"Spawn" had the studio insist a black character be recast as white to avoid making the audience think it was a 'black movie.'

And studies show the studios aren't completely off base.

I totally agree with you that a movie about gay soldiers would be a real step in the right direction.  If you ever see the movie "Enigma" (which i don't reccomend) they more or less replace gay-super genius warhero Alan Turing with a generic straight guy in a fictionalized retelling.

Was Tarkin the main villain in Star Wars?
Time

I think a key point is in SW how Vader's subordinated treat him. While he's plainly the boss, they aren't afraid of him and are free to disagree and almost argue.

By ESB Vader's moved up in the world. He has a bigger ship, commands other ships, and NO ONE gives him instructions and you question him at your peril.

How much of this can be accounted by a change in Vader the person, and how much can be accounted by a change in Imperial power structure?

One possibility is that his discovery of having a son (and planning a father/son coup) has made him more motivated/aggressive.

The other possibility is that Vader's now "off the leash." He's plainly been promoted, either because of the power vacuum above him after the DS went boom, or because his apparent mandate of hunting down the Rebels has now become the main focus of the Imperial navy.

Since Vader had a rise in status between SW and Empire, what does this tell us about his relationship with Tarkin?

In SW when Vader choked the douchebag in the confrence scene, everyone is shocked and appalled. Plainly this isn't normal... the dude pushed Vader a little too hard. After Star Wars, everyone almost expects to be choked... even Moff Jerjerood in ROTJ. This seems to indicate that Vader wasn't in a position to go around choking people willy-nilly in SW and one is left to wonder what would have followed if he hadn't obeyed Tarkin's order to release him.

The "I met a famous person" thread
Time

Nick Cage, Josh Brolin, and Paris Hilton all came into the Blockbuster I worked at.

I met Andy Dick at the bar and he tried to score coke from my roommate. They ended up partying all night.

I had numerous encounters with Bob Hope and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson in restaurants and coffee shops in Palm Springs.

Woody Harrelson used the bench press next to me at a gym in Arcata california. He was on a huge bike tour promoting hemp.

I've met tons of pro wrestlers, some quite famous, but I actually trained with several who went on to national TV, Rico Costantino, Chris Daniels, and Frankie Kazarian.

ps.

Oh yeah, I'm back.

Great....more lazy photoshop collages

Peculiar that the main character (Qui Gon) and the most important characters to the "Saga" (Annie and Amidala) aren't on it.

The prequels' influence on pop-culture?
Time

georgec said:

Decades from now film scholars will look back on this era and point to the prequels as quintessential examples of how storytelling suffered at the expense of CGI, CGI, and more CGI.

You mean as compared to how other special effects styles bring out the best in story telling, like stop motion "Jason and the Argonauts" being nothing but a series of loosely strung together set pieces with no ending, or how class puppets gave us finely crafter epics like "Critters" and "Ghoulies?

and men in suits gave us gripping dramas like "Gamera" and "Battle of the Gargantuas?"

And we can never forget touching character studies like "Robot Jox."

What's the deal with not drinking coffee? I mean... why doesn't God love you enough?

To be clear... I'm aware that it's a rule in the Words of Wisdom (?) church dotrine against 'hot drinks' that also includes tea

BUT why would any God but an Evil God (Like in Time Bandits) make something so great, and then go "No coffee for you!"

I'm saying that there should be more established and better developed motivations for Luke's near turn.....and you're saying that it's the emperor's power of persuasion in the force that defies rational.

There are, you're not seeing them.
You think that he's turning to the dark side when he attacks Vader, he's not. He's angry at the idea that Vader will try to turn Leia, along with everything else that happened, but that's the thing that makes him actually start attacking. It's well established already that they love each other, romantically or platonically, in all three of the movies. In the same movie, Luke has rescued Leia and showed concern for her well being. There is a scene where he tells her that they're brother and sister.

His "near turn" is within the duel after he starts attacking, when he goes from participating to becoming the aggressor. This is because he is using his anger to help him succeed, which has natural consquences that are also well established. That's why he looks surprised and disturbed with himself after cutting off Vader's hand. He's realizing that he's gone farther than he intended to.

 This.

A turn to the Dark Side (in the OT) is not described as a simple choice based on wanting a specific outcome.

It's seductive, and easy. Dangerous.

Luke's "motivation" is getting him pissed off/scared enough to use the Dark Side. "Why" doesn't matter. (There is no why).

The Dark Side isn't steroids. It's not a shady choice that leads to a goal.

The Dark Side is methamphetamine. Try it and it destroys your soul and takes control.

Feeling very down about the current state of Star Wars
Time

Sometimes.

But really, I have the Harmy versions to watch. I have SW:R and am eagerly awaiting ESB:R.

Frankly, most movies I love DON'T have a "current state" to feel one way or the other about. I own "Casablanca" and watch it sometimes. That's it.

So whenever I'm pissed at Lucas, or not enjoying the EU or something, I just remember that it's the movies that I love, and the rest is just gravy.
