'Why the SW prequels are better than the OT' - article inside
Time

If the Force is can have a powerful influence over the weak minded the, PT Jedi must be the most mentally feeble beings in the cosmos to fall for Palpatine's obvious plan.

The story is weak but AOTC is the sagging middle of the soggy cardboard the PT is built on.

Even a fool can see there is a problem there.

Add supernatural powers to the mix and they are worse than fools.

While I prefer to call AOTC the hole in the middle of the butt that is the PT, the Jedi aren't the ones who approve the clone army. The Senate does that. They're stupid, but at least they aren't supposed to be all wise and psychic and stuff.

Actually, I'm doing an interview with a right-wing newspaper this week, which normally isn't my thing, but they did a piece on this and they made a very good point about the factual inaccuracies.

To be fair, I think he was suggesting that the the PT was better because it reflected more modern and complex ideas of good and evil - however unintentionally. I think he used the Bush era as examples of what kinds complexities he has in mind. He is imposing his worldview upon the movie and calling it brilliant on that basis. I think his characterizations of the Bush era and his allusions to the Cold War or WWII are oversimplistic, if not flat out wrong. Lucas is an avowed liberal who certainly knew about complex notions of good and evil in the wake of Vietnam War.

Totally agreed. As if the 1970s were somehow less morally ambiguous is somewhat silly.

The main thesis of the article seems to be something along the lines of "The PT attempted a more complicated backstory and had less likeable characters, which somehow makes it better than the OT regardless of any other values as an entertainment."

I'll agree Padme and Annie talking about dictatorship in the grass is one of my favorite scenes in the whole PT. But it doesn't make up for "I hate sand" "Yoousa in bad doo doo" "Dont do it Anakin, I have the high ground" "Nooooooooooooooooo" or a slew of other cringe worthy scenes.

SE Appreciation?
Time

Ive state my opinion on this many times, but I don't think there's ever been a thread just for this.

If every single DVD-BR release of any Star Wars movie came bundled with both the OT lovingly restored, and the newest tweaked SE, how would you feel?

I think a lot of the hate towards the SE would vanish. I for one would probably look at it as a fun novelty, that I'd pop in and enjoy everyone once in a while. I'd fondly debate the 2004 SE vs the new 2011 BR SE.

I would care so much that the SEs are going to be in the theaters with 3D. In fact, I'd probably be stoked to see them.

Would this dual packaging (always dual, no option for just OT or SE) make you happy? Would you feel differently about the SE?

Lucas is just trolling now - THR Interview

I think George is self-isolating. He's fairly ordinary-looking and I think he could put on a hat and walk around Frisco and few people would notice him much less recognize him. I used to live and work in NYC and I saw famous people all the time (much more recognizable than GL), doing ordinary things, and I never saw anyone speak to them, much less mob them. Maybe Frisco is different than NY (New Yorkers pride themselves on acting unimpressed by anything or anyone-LOL), but he's definitely not The Beatles circa 1964.
He's not even Lindsay Lohan, for that matter. :-P

If I saw George Lucas in anything other than his trademark flannel, I'd have a hard time recognizing him.

Shoot, trim the beard and lose the pompadour, and I don't even think Speilberg would recognize him.

IF this was true (which it's not), doesn't that make Lucas an incompetent filmmaker?

If, for 35 years everyone who saw his movie drew one conclusion (Only Han Shot) and he thought he tried to make the other point, isn't the fault HIS for being incompetent? Not the fault of the fans for 'wanting a cold blooded killer'?

Imagine if Orson Welles came out in the early 60s and said everyone was stupid for misunderstanding the ending to Citizen Kane. The shot should have been wider and shown that EVERYTHING Kane owned was named "Rosebud" and that he was a greedy obsessive bastard, not a tormented soul longing for lost innocence. Wouldn't that make Welles an incompetent loon?

Fate of the Jedi book / audiobook
Time

I’ve read or listened to the entire Fate of the Jedi series, that wraps up next month.

Or I think I have. Maybe.

To prepare for the last book, I did a quick Wookieepedia check to see if I had read them all so far.

Even after reading the synopsiseses, I don’t know. The story is so slow, repetitive, spread out, and generally boring, coupled with titles that are incredibly generic, I honestly don’t know if I’ve read the last two or not. They SOUND familiar, but so does the synopsis for the upcoming book.

So I guess that counts as a review, if I read them.

George doesn't like 3D That 'comes out at you' from the screen (!)

The skeptic in me wonders if he "doesn't like" that sort of 3D because he can't do it with the source material he has.  Because that statement is inconsistent with Sy Snootles' ROTJ Special Edition lips.

I'm starting to think that it's not the Lucas isn't true to his filmmaking ideals... it's that he doesn't have any.

Given his frequent self-contradictions, both in statements and in his work, it sems likely he's just bluffing whenever he talks, and making it all up as he goes along (like the Star Wars plotline).

I don't mean that as pure Lucas Bashing. Look at the pattern. How can a man make the heartfelt American Graffiti and the souless AOTC? How can he produce the most amazing, visceral special effects and the worst most embarrassingly obvious CGI?

I think it's likely that GL just has little to no self-reflection as an artist. He probably doesn't rationally know why his films were genius anymore than he knows why his other films are so dissapointing.

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time

I saw this flick during my little hiatus from this site. Thought I'd share my thoughts.

Didn't like it.

I don't think much of the anger directed at Lucas is fair.

If someone is a weirdo who collects 75 different Darth Vader dolls, or feels he's supposed to, and is angry about it, that's not Lucas's fault. Nor is it his fault if you obsessively collect the EU and don't like it.

If the Prequals aren't to your liking, well, that IS Lucas's fault, but it's not a personal thing. Lots of filmmakers are disapointing sometimes. You don't see "People vs. Ed Burns" for how boring his movies all were.

If the concept of midichlorians offends you somehow, that is also technically Lucas's fault, but again, how pissed can you be about a fictional virus thing?

I don't like that what I see as the only real gripes against Lucas (suppression of the OT, his documented untruths) is grouped in with a lot of (for lack of a better word) silliness.

Actual concern for film preservation and cultural heritage shouldn't be mixed with asshats singing "George Lucas Raped My Childhood."

But don't listen to me I'm fruitier than a nutcake.

I think someone's being doing a little too much LDS.

Set the good example. Release the original too. Remember it how it was so you so you can show what improvements time and skill (and sobriety) can bring over 13 years. Don't bury the past. SHARE IT.

Ironic given the purpose of this site, but that never occured to me. I'm sure I can fit two 11 minute films on one DVD. duh.

Heck, I might do three, and have the raw footage as well.

I am George Lucas :(
Time

I can't help it.

In 1999 me and some college pals shot a movie. It was all shot in order, each scene getting one take, on a Hi-8. It was a hoot.

In 2003, I'd taken my VHS copy, digitized it and used Windows Movie Maker to make a DVD version. I made small edits to ease cuts between shots, static caused by the stop-and-go recording. Literally just a few second-long cuts, and I put a closing credits on it.

This weekend I kicked back with the old college buddy. He had the original Hi-8 tape that we shot a movie on back in 1999.  I said, SURE, I'd love to digitize from the master, and use Adobe Premiere to make a decent looking DVD.

I can't hep myself. I'm creating an elaborate opening. Rescoring it (in 1999 we scored it by dubbing to VHS and using one of the stereo channels to pump in music), color correcting scenes, rearranging some shots, and I CANT BELIEVE IT, actually shooting some new footage (two cutaways to hide bad jump cuts).

All this for an 11 minute horror-spoof shot on one night while half drunk 13 years ago.

I understand Lucas a little bit more now.

George has charities.

Wouldn't it be a better use of funds to raise the money necessary to put an ad in Variety but instead donate the money to one of George's campaigns in a way that generates media interest.

A story along those lines would be better copy for papers like Variety and be financially more interesting than any single payment ad.

It would also be better use of the cash.

Let's raise a million dollars, and say we'll either set it on fire or donate it to Edutopia dependant on if GL releases the OT.

Even better. We raise a million, and the choice is donate to EDUTOPIA or NAMBLA. It's all up to George!

With POPA and PIPA and ACTA and what not going down, this seems a good time to discuss what do you steal online?

How do you justify it... if you bother to justify it at all?

In general I think getting something for free over the net that you could have paid for fairly is a bad thing. But then again it's so easy!

Obviously a fan-edit enthusiast has certain views on the legal grey-areas of the download. I own a legal copy of every fan-edit I have, including a copy of stinkin AOTC that I had to go and buy just to have the "Attack of the Phantom."

I've stolen a few movies off line that were not otherwise available, the "Lensman" anime and the film "Over the Rainbow" are a couple.

Otherwise the only movie I straight up bootlegged when I could have paid for it was "X-Men Origins Wolverine" which came out the weekend my son was born, and dammit I was stressed and wanted to see it!

I download a lot of music, but most of it I delete after a couple listens. The stuff that I keep on my iPod I own legally, and if I really like something I do buy it (not often, most music bores me). This doesn't make it legal of course.

If I miss a TV show sometimes I'll torrent it, but only if it's not available for streaming on the channel's website (a lot are these days).

I also download computer games. I'm an enthusiast of old adventure games, and most of the ones I play fall into the legal greyzone of "abandomware". I'm not a stickler on that, and I'm sure of the ones I download are still for sale somewhere if I bothered to or wanted to look.

I'm not claiming to be paragon of online virture obviously.

What are your views and experiences in the online world of 'piracy' and what not?

This, but also I think his points were fairly weak at some parts.

For every really good point (like the effects of off-screen or small-in-frame violence) he did something dumb like dwell on how he didn't like the delivery of one line ("Part time.")
