Video Games - a general discussion thread

It's a problem with the video game industry itself.

Relevant article: Why your games are made by childless, 31 year old white men

My career is in Computer Programming, so trust me when I say that creativity is non-existent when the working conditions are as bad as they are now in the video game industry.

Here's what it's like working for EA: http://ea-spouse.livejournal.com/274.html

I followed a PodCast of a former writer for the WWE, and his discussions with other former writers. The hours and stress of that job, coupled with endless travel, burns them out ridiculously, and most last less than 12 months. One guy said he never even bothered to learn co-workers names.  They all tended to agree that those conditions are partly to blame for so little creativity and quality making it to wrestling TV.

Dracula
Time

Had dinner with my mum the other night. Somehow the Count came up in conversation.

She recalled that when I was in the 4th grade, I wrote a book report about "Dracula's Mustache."

It seems I was troubled that the book has Drac with a stash, and the movies didn't. She said I always complained how "Batman's boss" (Commissioner Gordon) has a mustache in the comics but not on the show.

How many times have you bought the movies?
Time

Just a couple months ago I bought this

at a Thrift store. Don't know why.

I already owned the "faces" VHS set. And I have "Star Wars SE" and "Jedi SE" on VHS.

Shortly after it became clear Lucas wasn't lying when he said the OOT wouldn't be on VHS, I bought a bootleg DVD of the laserdisc rips from eBay.

After discovering fan-edits, I bought the GOUT DVD sets to 'legalize' it.

Okay I made an edit too late so I will repost.

Who is supporting the African dictators who don't care for those things. We, the developed countries do. So we can exploit their natural resources. Who sells arms to Africa? We do.

Yeah, but look at a young man like Andrew Martin, who plainly only received the opportunities he got because of a physique that clearly was abusing steroid, and for the WWE to put him into a physically punishing and relentless work schedule, isn't it ingenuous of them to say Martin's death as a result of drug abuse and pain killer addiction was solely a result of his own character flaws?

And you saying, "we need to talk about more important things, like hunger in the world, and irresponsible Africans" accomplishes alot outside of making you feel smug?

Yes, we need to talk about irresponsibility.

If the media was after stuff that actually merits the attention the most then your multi-trillion debt would be the main news everyday. But who wants to hear about that, right? I mean no one would want to hear about their irresponsibility.

The way you just randomly jump topics is amusing.

I picture you in a Ramones shirt, smoking a cigarette.

"You can't ground me for failing Algebra mom. Don't you even know about the Patriot Act? There are oil spills in Alaska. You don't know anything."

I not trying to be disrespectful or anything but I think these kind of events get way too much attention.

couldn't disagree with you more.   3 people died and many more have lost limbs.    Since the we haven't yet arrested the person or people responsible, this could happen again.   I'd say that merits attention.

Oh yes of course... since media attention and you discussing it on forums will actually help arresting the person responsible...

And you saying, "we need to talk about more important things, like hunger in the world, and irresponsible Africans" accomplishes alot outside of making you feel smug?

AnctuFaalb, I agree. Their main goal is to get attention. And people are giving it to them.

I do. that why I help out with my churches' food bank.

You might want to check some stats about world-wide hunger relief before you make those claims.

I hate to be realistic but just sending the food doesn't actually solve the problem. The country and its people need to get responsible and limit their population within their production capabilities. I mean "send us food and we will multiply" attitude is bound to hit the brutal reality of nature.

Thanks for being "realistic."

The massive hunger in Haiti is caused by crippling foreign debt, the long term effects of colonization and fascist governments, massive deforestation and soil erosion, and an infrastructure and agriculture hobbled by the policies of US farm subsidies.

The terrible famine in East Africa is caused by a horrible drought, and a nation lacking the infrastructure and stability to deal with it because of two decades of Civil War. Most regions have become one-food-source areas, and without interconnectivity to supplement them, interruption to that one food source is catastrophic.

Gee, I sure wish all these irresponsible starving people would just stop it.

They don't? You might want to check some stats about world-wide hunger relief before you make those claims.

^?!?!?!?! HALF THE POPULATION IS BEING SYSTEMATICALLY CONVINCED TO HAAATTTTEEE WHITE CHRISTIAN MALES IN A VICIOUS AND DISCRIMATORY WAY!!!   It's empowering the TOTALITARIAN left to destroy EVERYTHING that has made this nation great and good and decent!!! It is enabling our foreign enemies to acquire WPM to give to terrorists to destroy American cities!! You think that crap isn't ripping apart the families of white Christians and making their lives impossible?!?!?

White American Christian here.

My life is just as easy today as it was before this. And before Newton, and Aurora, and Columbine, and the Olympic bombings, or the Anthrax attacks.

I'm still doing pretty good. But my Wife is Mexican, so maybe that protects me from the Oppression Rays that victimize all the rest of us in the majority.

Best TNG episode? My vote: Chain of Command - Part 2

THERE... ARE... FOUR... LIGHTS!!!

Definitely up there.

I heard that they were really over budget, and all the stuff between Pickard and David Warner was written just to get another episode out of those sets they already built. If that's true, that's amazing.

I don't really care, but if it's such a crime to blame Islamic extremists, why is it okay to blame right wing white American Protestants with equally little corroborating evidence?

I think the differences in sensitivity levels is largely due to all the attacks and hate crimes done against white people after Newton, Aurora, Columbine, and Oklahoma City.

@Boost, now I can't help but wonder if you're cheating by looking them up. That said, I believe there is at least one other prominent serial killer (I'd have to look up who, since I've forgotten) who is Mormon. Another infamous example is Butch Cassidy.

JEDIT: Now I know you're not cheating because I tried to look up Shelton Young and can't find anything. Are you making that one up?

You caught me. ;-)

As things are unfolding it is unfortunate that it seems more likely that this was more likely a home grown attack as no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. There are some real sick individuals out there.

just because no one has claimed responsibility, does not mean it was a home grown attack.

As info trickles out, pressure cookers and nails are less Al Queda and more local devil, traditionally.

Correction: I guess Afghan militants have a history of using pressure cookers as IEDs.

The friend-zone, if you are the sort of person that has friends who wish you wouldn't be standing outside their door holding a cup of coffee and a rose at 6am to wish them a good day at work.

Yuck.

It didn't have that name at the time, but there were a couple times in my past I was perilously close to that.

No friendship is worth the loss of dignity and personal suffering that kind of crap entails.

Yup.

And after all the homebrew terrorist attacks over the last 12 months, I would say it's bordering on racist to automatically assume this is related to any Muslim organization.

Islam is a religion, not a race.

True, but in American discourse, Islam is intrisniscally tied up with Arab relations.

When we blame Muslims, no one is thinking of Indonesia or Mauritania.

As much as I enjoy some (a rather limited quantity) of the EU, I really hope you are right and that the ST is not limited by it.

I just can't imagine JJ Abrhams, Disney execs, Lawrence Kasdan, and Kathleen Kenedy sitting around coming up with ideas, and in the corner is some intern on Wookiieepedia saying "Nope. That idea contradicts "Glove of Darth Vader."
