I am willing to bet if the movie had used the kind of cast that used in 25th anniversary concert,  it would have won best picture.

Not a chance! If it wouldn't have had big name actors in it, the Oscars wouldn't have even payed it a bit of attention. It is as much a popularity contest as it is anything else.

I agree with CP3S, and no way theyd ave gotten that budget with Alfie Boll.

That being said, Jackman and Hathaway are huge stars. Couldn't they have done without Crowe, who is a big deal, but not at their level of bankability anymore? I doubt he sold a lot of tickets to this thing.

Also, the pacing was indeed much, MUCH slower than by today's standards, and stories were drawn out sometimes over 4 weeks, even up to 8 weeks.  That's how movies and shows were back then.  It's one of the things I enjoy about the old shows, you could really get immersed in a story over a long period of time, and really get to know the characters.  Even now, if I watch an old story, I try and watch one installment, then a couple of days later, watch the next installment, etc., instead of bang-bang and its over in an hour.

In America, at least where I live, they showed a whole instead of just 1 part a week.

Where I lived we got two episodes a week on PBS, Saturday mornings. About 11 o'clock, late enough that the cartoons were over on the main channels.

Watched "Sweeney Todd" (2007) last night.

Depp and BonhamCarter are both not good enough singers to sing those part. BUT they make up for it with extremely well developed performances. Depp is just oozing with hate, and HelenaBonham is quite funny.

Gerard Butler is not anywhere near good enough to be The Phantom of the Opera, but he exudes so much raw primal passion and sexuality his performance still has something to grab onto and enjoy.

Crowe as Javert sucks even more in comparison. He can't sing the part, and also just kind of wanders around looking mad and confused.

Underworld Awakening.

I kinda dug the first three as fun, if kinda dumb rides.

Never has a film totally burnt up any good will I had towards it within the first four minutes. Awful. Boring. Confusing. And totally skipped the good idea that might have made a fun flick (the vampire/werewolf purge).

[fill in the blank] Just Died!

The woman wrecked millions of people's lives.

I seem to remember when Bin Laden was reported dead someone put a picture of the Statue of Liberty holding his bloody head up.

It is sad she died in a bed in the Ritz while her policies left pensioners to die on hospital trolleys or cold because they either turned the heating on or ate.

It's sad that we have to pay ten million towards her funeral while the benefits of the disabled are being slashed.

I think that being dead is not a magical get out of jail free card for someone's actions in life.

If Ms. Thatcher had died of wounds sustained while saving orphans from bees, then I think it would be good to lay off her for a couple weeks, but still, I think she's still fair game.

Is it the Characters or the Actors??
Time

Both. You can't differentiate between the two. Plus a decent script and and a director who knows how to tell a story. (Irwin Kershner springs to mind)

True, but a talented and charismatic actor can make a badly written character interesting (Christopher Lee), but a lousy performance can ruin what should be a great character.

Although, given this is a "Star Wars" forum, to be fair, I don't think any actor could have saved Anakin in the PT.

Some interesting quotes from Abrams on how he values old school movie-making techniques:

Could EpVII herald the revival of matte paintings and practical models?  I hope so!

The dude did push for real sets and practical effects on "Star Trek."

I work at a high school. Walking onto campus this morning in the parking lot a couple of big senior football player types were talking loudly. It was all "f-word" this and "n-word" that, which I generally find distasteful.

As I passed them, it turned out they were talking about "Dragonball Z" which somehow made it hilarious.

Yeah, it's that kind of negativity that makes me not want to frequent forums. Makes me wish ot.com had a ranking system where nuisances like that could be buried by the collective.

The ignore button tends to come in handy.

No, my good lord, ignore VINH, ignore vbangle, ignore Frink, but for sweet skyjedi, kind skyjedi, true skyjedi, valiant skyjedi, and therefore more valiant being, as he is old skyjedi, ignore not him thy company, banish not him thy  company. Ignore plump skyjedi, and ignore all the world.
