Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time

Here's a thought.

If I recall right, the new Battlestar Galactica had a bunch of battles that took place in an Endor-esque forest. (actually, I think every exterior in the shows first three seasons was the same copse of trees).

Maybe some of that, trees with explosions and things, could be tweaked and dropped into the Endor battle.

Or heck, anyone have stome Storm Trooper armor? You and me can drive to Northern California and we can spend a weekend filming you dying in all sorts of ways in the same redwoods they shot ROTJ in.

What could be cool (though unnecessary to add, admittingly) would be to see the monitor in the Falcon's cockpit when Han and Leia are figuring out where to go, as they eventually decide on Bespin as their destination.

A good reference for what the image might look like would be when Obi Wan was looking at the monitor on Amidala's ship in TPM, when he pointed out Tatooine was close enough to travel to without lightspeed.

But yeah, this wouldn't be a necessary change, but could be cool if done right. Just saying.

I don't know. That moment and when Luke's Xwing leave Dagobah and the camera stays on Yoda are perfect examples as to why ESB is the best... the film focuses on the subtlety of an actors performance instead of some special effect.

I just want to be on the safe side. If I get like spam form you guys I am deleting my account and I will have to start all over again so be careful. I know This is long to read.

Let me see if I get you.

You are making a fan-edit of some sort, and you are looking for collaborators. You're fan edit (apparently?) is going to be based on a Christian theme (?), and consequently you want collaborators who are of the same general faith background as yourself, which I'm assuming is some kind of Protestant Evangelical.

I'm certain there's a way this could all be said that doesn't make you sound so off-putting. It goes without saying, but you don't come off well in your post (as you no doubt gathered from the previous replies).

STAR WARS Movies Animated
Time

Here are the villains from my outline. We have a main badde (Mandalore) his twisted henchman (Rothven) and a treacherous partner-villain (Brett Thousand). Thoughs, comments, and suggestions are more than welcome.

WOYIC MANDALORE
The Battlelord of the Mandalorians leads his invasion fleet from his mighty flagship Hohrac. Gruff, violent, and is never seen outside of his blood-red armor (including skull-like helmet) which has shielding on the arms that deflect lightsabers. During the final battle ObiWan leads the Aqualonian Rangers onboard the Hohrac, and engages Mandalore in single combat. But the duel is just a distractin to allow the Rangers to scuttle the ship, destroying the Mandalorian chain of command and removing their greatest weapon. In the end, ObiWan and Mandalore crash to Alderaan in the scuttled front of the ship, but both crawl out of the wreckage alive.

ROTHVEN DAGUHN
Roth is a Mandalorian commander and placed in charge of hunting down Prince Bail. Toth is a beutiful young man, with perfectly styled curly hair, imaculate blue/gold armor, and a delicate and graceful (almost effiminate) nature. He's also a sadistic sociopath of such utter cruelty the rest of the warlike and brutal Mandalorians are uncomfortable with him. Anakin's first use of the force is during the climax, when he yanks the blaster out of Rothven's hand as Rothven threatens Lhasa "NotPadme" Arcadia.

BRETT THOUSAND
Notorious pirate Brett Thousand allied with the Mandalorians for money. Beared, heavyset, and with a robotic eye, Thousand has an undisguied contempt for the Mandalorians. His pirate fleet of aliens and cyborgs shore up the Mandalorian blockade on Alderaan, letting the Mandalorian Invasion Force focus on their strategic objectives. When the tide of battle turns as the Hohruc crashes, Thousand and his ships abandon the Mandalorians and retreat to hyperspace.

PALPATINE
The leader of the planet Had Abadon, Palpatine is an old man from an unimportant planet, but is the only member of the Republic willing to aid Alderaan in this conflict. After the pirates flee, early model TIE fighters from Had Abadon attack in the final battle, squeezing the Mandalorians between two fleets, forcing a surrender.

(For the Mandalorian names, I've been using the Native American Wiyot language. Very roughly Woyic=Wolf, Hohruc=Snake, Daguhn=Pain)

I have some notes on a Sith Assassin who kind of hangs on the edge of the plot, but no real solid ideas how to intergrate him into it at the moment.

I think what Phantom Editor did was great... he edited the movie as an editor. He didn't try to re-write it...

Well SOMEONE has to.  Someone has to make it right.  Lucas certainly didn't.  The Prequels could have used a few re-writes.  And now that the technology is available to us at home, what's wrong with trying to make it better?  Of course, "better" is subjective.  But what I've noticed over the years is that this board is heavy on people with opinions and light on people with any sort of real technical or artistic skill.  So what you end up with is a group of people with talent being critiqued and many times discouraged by those who really don't have much talent at all.

That's kind of my point. I think what Phantom Editor did was can be seen almost objectively as improvements to the film, from a technical film-editing standpoint. I don't know how many other fan-editors could have 4 hours of commentary track justifying each change they made without just voicing their opinions on things.

On the other hand, if someone wants to make Boba Fett a Jedi and have General Grivous beat ObiWan in a fight or whatever, and have the skills to pull it off, more power to them.  If you want to digitally paint out Mas Amada or speed up the Asteroid Field chase in ESB and add the Benny Hill music, go for it. I can like or dislike those ideas, and whoever is doing them can tell me to fuck off I suppose. It's all subjective.

I've never made a fan-edit of note. I think a website 100% populated by people who aren't billionaires from creating their own internationally beloved film franchise yet who spend their time critiquing someone who did, cannont play the 'if you can't do it, you can't talk about it' card.

I like spinning starfields, and I hope Adywan decided to leave it in his ESB:R. If I can't express that opinion, then I ask what the point of a disccussion board is? If I'm a dick about it, then I should be ignored for being a dick, not for having a different subjective opinion about a film.

And for what it's worth, I like the PT more than most on this board, yet I am very interested in seeing The Starkiller Sage, just to see what they managed to pull off with their radical ideas.

I like Luke/Vader 2 in ROTJ. When Luke gets all pissed, and the choir kicks in, that gives me chills.

I'll say I think the Obi/Vader 1 in ROTS is great... up until they start swining on vines over lava and things just get ridiculous. I think the moves, and the speed, and the saber and force attacks up until then are awesome. All that CGI near the end felt like gilding a lilly.

. According to Smith just after the release of Clerks II (a Kevin Smith film in which in a scene two characters have an argument about which is the the better trilogy - Lord of the Rings or the OT, the guy supporting LOTR calls Hayden Mannequin Skywalker) Smith got a call from someone at Skywalker Ranch / Lucasfilm (Smith has connections there as he does all his sound editing on his movies at Skywalker Sound and got married on the Ranch back in the day) saying that Hayden called up George and/or a person in a position of power livid that Clerks II was making fun of him and suggested that Lucasfilm should sue Kevin Smith and/or The Weinstein Company/Miramax. Apparently the response was "ah no Hayden we are not going to do that"

Smith went on to say that it's parody, it's no big deal and by what he wrote he was supporting Star Wars over LOTR and it was the moronic fanboy character calling him Mannequin. He further went on to say he's Darth Vader stop being such a pussy and added the "NNOOOoooooo!!!

So Smith told a rude story second hand from an anonymous source? What a guy.

But then again, when the man has released almost as many documentaries about how cool he is as he has actual movies, what more can we expect?

Although how famous was Bale back when AOTC came out?

He had been in a lot of high profile movies by that time and his name was well known. He had been in Disney's Treasure Island with Charlton Heston, Spielberg's Empire of the Sun, American Psycho, and The Newsies, to name a few off the top of my head.

In 2002, the same year AOTC was released, he starred in the (semi) Fahrenheit 451 adaption titled Equilibrium and was big enough to have his name advertised on the movie poster (though I think the movie was a bit of a flop, I for one rather liked it).

I guess he was a mid to low level movie star. Not particuarly more famous than Ewan McGregor was (although i think a  bit old for Anakin).

But he did kick ass in Newsies.

I think Lucas is wise in sticking with relatively unknown actors. Better to have people saying, "Oh, Anakin from the Star Wars movies is in this new movie" rather than, "Oh, Batman is playing Anakin in the next Star Wars movie" (yeah, I know I am a bit anachronistic there).

When you use a known actor, he already has an identity in the audiences mind. If you go with a relatively unknown, a few people will have seen the TV show he was in, but for the vast majority of the audience, you and your movie will be creating his identity, assuming your movie is an big as Star Wars that is. Harrison Ford will be either Han Solo or Indiana Jones until the day he dies, no other role will ever change that.

I agree with this sentiment. To me, no matter what he plays, when I see Harrison Ford, I see... the Guy from 'Witness.'

But seriously, when I see Anakin, I want to see Anakin, not A famous actor I recognize. Although how famous was Bale back when AOTC came out? Not as famous as he is now (although a little old for the role).

It's different with older characters, where it's easy to transform our familiarity with the actor (Guiness, Cushing, Neeson) and that feels like the character has more... gravitas (that feels like the right word).

(I'd have cast James Franco)

Changing Bobba's voice back to the original voice throws out the continuity which is the whole point of Ady doing his revist. Maybe I'll myself that Bobba had a cold or a sore throat when tracking down Han!!

Boba and Jango had different, unique experiences. After approx. 26 years of NOT hanging around his father, I'm certain his voice would sound different from his father (when he was Boba's age).

I knew identical twins in high school who sounded totally alike. One went to college, the other builds awnings. Now, by their late-20s, they sound totally different.

don't bash me but if ady was ever planning of putting pt music in return of the jedi i like him to insert the anikin padme love theme when luke and leia are talking about their mother then it dissolves into the skywalker theme just my idea

It would make sense to place the Luke and Leia theme into ROTS (when the twins are born) but Across The Stars could only be used a very little bit in that scene as it's mainly about them and not about their parents.

It's also a sweeping love theme... and since Luke and Leia already swapped spit twice, probably best to avoid that kind of mood when they're standing alone in the moonlight.

Time

I'd cite "Batman Forever: The Red Book Edition" as a film that takes a seriously flawed movie, and improved it greatly... although I wish the editor hadn't gone so crazy with the desaturation button.

I think "Doom: The Possessed" cut was great... well, great in the sense that it took an unwatchably bad movie and made it a fun bad movie.

One of the more creative ones I saw was 'Superman: Redeemed', which took the action from Superman 4, and mixed it with the basic plot of Superman 3. While better than either original film, it succeeded in making me realize even the good parts of those films still sucked.

Some just seem pointless. 'X-Men: Requium War' combined all three X-men films into one three hour epic. It worked plot wise, but seemed pointless somehow. The X2 parts still ruled, the X3 parts still sucked, and I still don't know what the title means.

On the otherhand "Marvel: 24" was just a hoot and a half. Balls to the wall fun, no explanation needed.

When it comes to Star Wars, I have a tough time understanding some of the edits I've heard of. One thing might be I simply don't get major love for minor villains. Boba Fett did his role, looked cool, and died a goon's death. Darth Maul and Greivous both served their purposes. I don't need to see a Robot-Tarkin at Cloud City to make me appreciate the supporting villain who died previously.

I think what Phantom Editor did was great... he edited the movie as an editor. He didn't try to re-write it... and the films benefited greatly from that.

One thing that gets me is how many changes are justified as 'truer to the spirit' or something rather than 'my opinion as a faneditor.' And usually, in Star Wars and most films, 'truer to the spirit' means darker and more violent, with no kissy parts.

Temple of Doom? Cut the funny bits to be 'truer to the spirit.'

ROTJ? Less funny bits to be 'truer to the spirit'

The Spirit? Less funny, more punchy, to be truer to the Spirit.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron... you get the idea.

Couldn't it easily be said the ESB is not true to the 'spirit' of Star Wars, since it's darker and depressing? Yet no one edits it to be lighter in tone (an upbeat ending somehow?)

It is so exhausting trying to have a conversation on these boards. Alll 99.999999999999% of you do is say how much you hate this or how Lucas destroyed that. You cant post a single thing without saying something negative about Star Wars.

It doesnt strike you as odd that writers, people hired for their skills to craft compelling stories, are bound by what 'offical bloggers' and editors on role playing game supplements from the 80s decided were good ideas? Ideas that the vast majority of us never heard of (Darth Millenial? I dont know who he is... but this Pena guy invented him some time back and now he's canon).

This might sound evil beyond words but there are some shots of Ewoks firing weapons in (I can't believe I'm typing this) the Ewok films (specifically the second one) that might be recycled and reworked as elements for new shots in a ROTJ redux.

I can't post examples because I don't have the DVD's (even I wouldn't buy those things especially after seeing Caravan Of Garbage in the cinema without a disguise to hide behind).

If we can make some good come from the agony of watching them would be be doing good or just adding more grit to the already contaminated intimate lubricant?

That sir, is a DAMN fine idea. I'll watch my copies tonight.

Perusing Wookiepedia, I kept coming across this dude's name.

Apparently Abel Pena writes for the Star Wars website, and the RP games.

What's weird, is that it seems what he scribbles in the margins of Rule Books or in blogs on the Star Wars website apparently is offical Lucasfilm canon. Real authors are bound by it (I guess that's why the villain in 'Shadows of Mindor' is so confusing, he had to fit the convoluted backstory Pena had already established for the character).

The next Darth Bane book has to mesh with the list of fictional Sith Lords this guy made up for an RPG supplement or something.

I'm not trying to throw hate at this guy. He writes quite eloquently about Star Wars in some of his blogs.
It just seems very backwards to me that the creative people tasked with actually writing the sagas have to bend-knee to the ideas of a guy who comes up with the dramatic sentences that appear on Star Wars trading cards.

Oh OK SkyJedi thanks for that. With these boards its hard to remember who hates what. Im a big fan of the EU and I don't mind too much when characters die, its a little unrealistic when everyone lives forever...excpet when they killed off Mara Jade and Lumiya in the same book. Too of my faves

I skipped the NJO books. I just loathed the Vong too much. I tried jumping back with the Legacy books, but Lumiya killed it for me. When she basically sat down and talked Jacen into becoming evil, I couldn't take it.

LUMIYA: You should be a Sith.

JACEN: No.

LUMIYA: You really should.

JACEN: Well... ... no. No.

LUMIYA: Come on. If you don't the plot won't happen.

JACEN: I really shouldn't.

LUMIYA: I'll be your best friend. Do it. DO IT. DO IT.

JACEN: Fine.
