Wait... what made the Empire so evil again?

Padme is indeed a racist.

Without denying that Padme shows a somewhat disturbing reaction to the sandpeople slaughter, let's acknowledge that the two were very differnet incidents.

1: Sandpeople

Anakin is a teenager who, finding his mother tortured to death flips out and kills a bunch of people, including the guilty and the innocent.

2: Younglings.

Anakin is a grown man/husband/father of her child who, for reasons that are vague at best, willingly betrays everyone and everything he believes in and leads a military assault on his former friends, including in it the cold-blooded murder of children.

I don't see how ysalamiri and midi-chlorians are similar in any way.

Really?

Not to put words into your mouth, what I've heard people not liking about the midichlorians is that they turn the force Sciency instead of mystical. That's all the ysalimari do, and they do it worse.

What makes the Force more sciency and banal than that lizards can evolve to fight it? Does the same planet have Sith-lightning bugs? Frogs that can Force-jump?

Clones cant be grown fast because the Force senses duplicate souls, and the ysalimari block the Force so that they can. OK, so circumventing the energy field created by all life, the power that binds the universe together, can be accomplished with a convienient reptile that 'evolved' to do it. It's like a plumbing problem.

And while the midi-chlorians are in maybe five lines of dialogue that could be cut from the PT and not effect it in any measurable way, the Jedi-lizards are the main plot point of the entire Thrawn trilogy. Since the Force is so easy to manipulate, I'm surprised Thrawn wasn't bottling it, drinking it, and using it to power his ships.

(this is the main reason I hate 'twilight' - it's pretty much ruined vampires forever for a lot of people)

You can't blame Twilight for anything, it's just not original enough.

It's just reaping the foul results of 30 years of dandified Anne Rice styled tortured vampires and mixing it with the vampires and werewolves should fight! trend. Throw in "vapire politics" that's in everything, and you have a work so derivative it's not even worthy of blame.

CNN writer blasts Star Wars in 3D (and other stuff George's changed)
Time

CNN guy misses the point. This has nothing to do with if Jar Jar was annoying or if 3D is a money making gimmick.

It has everything to do with the fact an Academy Award Best Picture nominated film that was beloved by millions and changed film forever doesn't exist anymore.

There's a similiar film with a differnet title, different effects, characters, and in some cases actors, but "Star Wars" is no where to be seen.

Everything else is just a distraction from that crime against art and culture.

This makes me feel old as well.

I adored those books when they came out (I was in 6th grade). I don't think they stood the test of time well, as it seems Zahn was more about his own awesome characters than giving our heroes anythng to do other than comment on how awesome Thrawn was, and in the end stand back and be observers as other characters saved the day.

The story was extremly political, it had clone Jedis, LuUke Skywalker and if anyone says the ysalimiri are somehow better than midichlorians I will cyber slap them.

The lizards will block the force to build the clones that the clone Jedi will then mind control to rule the galaxy. The plots a little convoluted and too full of wierd sci-fi concepts for my taste.

And Taalon Carde, the world's most perfect boss and great guy, both LIVES where the magic-lizards are, and just HAPPENS to know where to find the super ghost fleet. One coincidence is a plot point, two pushed my credibility, even for a sci-fi story.

This is an interesting question. In the 1970s, people could easily see the evil in the Empire. Today, it doesn't register so much. Sad, really.

Why do you think this is?

I think, for myself, it's easy to say to a kid: The Empire is evil.  Look, they're wearing black and shooting the good guys.  My requirements from the story teller are pretty low.  The storyteller says they're evil?  Fine, they're evil.  It's a pretty simple concept for high fantasy story telling.

But I think the onus on the prequels is to better explain what makes it evil?  In the OT, you can say, "Trust us.  They're evil.  We've seen it."  But when it's a new concept to the characters in the PT, it seems like you need to show people more that it's evil.  And taxing trade routes is probably not the most effective way of doing that.

Has anyone ever actually watched Star Wars and NOT known the Empire was evil? The first thing Vader does is choke a guy to death. Within minutes he tells the princess she has no rights and tortures her. We meet Tarkin and they talk about dismantling the senate and ruling through fear. They murder Luke's family. We're not talking about a lot of ambiguity here. There's nothing simple about it, it's as plain as day and clearly presented in every respect.

It's not my fault that you're a dipshit. Most kids your age are.

It seems to me that cursing at someone because you disaprove of the manner in which they express their sympathies to another person isn't a great sign of either maturity or compassion on your part.

They did kill an entire planet and dismantle galactic democracy.

True, but the Rebellion was already formed prior to this, right?

Yes, but I don't think it's reasonable to assume the Empire had a great record for human rights and civil justice leading up to that moment.

Vader already had a reputation prior to attacking and raiding the diplomatic vessel Leia was on, and I doubt "being bold" referred to his performances at poetry slams.

I think part of the idea was: How much setup does a movie based on Greek mythology need?  We all know who Zeus and Hades are.  We all like giant Scorpions and Greek soldiers fighting.  Put them in a box, let them fight...  MAKE MONEY!

But it didn't really work, in my humblest of opinions.

I agree with you, but I think the studio COMPLICATED the whole thing beyond reason because it was the most cliche thing to do. They set up too much.

  • Comic relief hunters join the party for no reason.
  • Other soldier guy hates the gods cuz his daughter died.
  • The only guy who actually notices the gods DO exist and WILL kick your ass is protrayed as a crazy cultist.
  • Perseus has daddy issues.
  • Perseus "chooces" to be a man but uses all God powers all the time.
  • Zeus is both good and bad, but all ineffectual.
  • Girl cursed with immortallity.
  • Charcoal man is bad, joins the team for no reason and dies.

While the plot of the original isn't brilliant, it's elegant in that it isn't full of needless complications that add nothing to the overall film.

And for what it's worth, I thought the action was not fun to watch.

Star Wars, Empire, Jedi, Ep 1, Ep 2, Ep 3.
I like how you refer to the originals by name and the prequels by number. I try to do that, but it always ends up coming out "Star Wars, the first one, the first one released."

It's not intentional. That's what I grew up calling the OT, when they had no numbers in the titles,  and when the PT came out, the numbers were first in the title, so that's how it seemed easiest to abbreviate.

They were an absolute dictatorship. if we include deleted scenes Biggs told Luke the Empire was taking over all business, and they would take his family farm and make him a tennant farmer.

There was apparently no judicial system, or at least Vader operated outside of it. Summary execution and torture of private citizens without trial. Search and seizure with no civil rights recognized.
