His role is heavily reduced. If everything works alright he’ll only appear in that ending scene in the council room.

The one where he say’s “begun the clone wars has”? I don’t know if you’re leaving it out of taste, but i think that scene could get the axe. It also makes sense that the name Clone Wars was something added by later generations. Like how WWI was known as the Great War in its time. Only WWI later when the 2nd war began

Sounds fantastic. Let me know if you’d like a hand with the blender side of things. I’m no expert but I know my way around it — see my OT.com vanity plate.

That looks amazing btw!!! If you swapped the space field out that could work into EP IV beautifully! I loved seeing all the internal structures too!

Hey Sandman! when it came to “improving” scenes, such as what you are doing with shadows and whatnot, I was really referring to the battle between the Gunkens and the droids, the “distraction” battle. During the retreat scenes, the visuals for the CGI was just so bad. So I was curious if anyone has ever attempted to try and improve those visually. I have no idea how, but those scenes in the movie were the really “glaring” visuals where for the most part the CG wasn’t too bad for back in 99.

Oh ok. Yea i know what you mean. They used models for much of that, but the way its all blended together still looks off. The cgi for the gun gun’s blending in definitely is one thing. This is one of the things i would like Blender for. That and creating a couple blocks of Theed to have fighter pilots cutting through buildings as they dog fight. (which is why i want ground shots of civilians. Like one of some people looking up to the sky as the pilots fly over head. This would be for the Attack of Theed).

The scenes that i want Blender for include Gungun/ JarJar scenes (including field battle) and the Attack on Theed run. At least for TPM.
ATOC- I would like to redo the chase in the beginning and the Battle on Geonosis. Among other shots like the library and more.
First though, Tpm.

I absolutely would be interested! I have not even begun yet with Blender so im less than familiar. After Effects was an easy leap due to time spent with Adobe Photoshop. Im a musician and artist, not a tech guy so i would appreciate any and all help.

To be frank. Im in no way territorial about my work. If i could work with others to bring these to fruition and to a quality thats above what i could do alone, i would welcome it.

Hello there,

I’ve recently reviewed this thread and find parts of it pretty fascinating. I am all for enhancing things, scenes or whatnot, especially “updating” the look of things. I see that Adywan is an inspiration in this matter and I do love his approach on enhancing established shots. For you I like the enhancing of planets, engine glowing and eventually working on shadows and some of the weakest CGI scenes. The biggest glaring one I see is the Gungan retreat scene and the tanks moving on the field. Anyway, things like that if you can work on those hots to look better, to the best of your abilities.

However, I myself am not sold on a couple of things. Like the force push effect … looks kinda silly to be honest. Also the bombing of Naboo doesn’t work for me too. I feel like it’ll be a lot of work with not much payoff.

I should add that ATOC and ROTS are not being begun till the 4k releases. TPM will also be redone in 4k. Im simply doing the bluray of TPM because i’ve already begun and it’s a chance to learn things and id like to get a work print out to hash out ideas. Its a passion project so its going to take time, im ok with that 😃

@TheAlaskanSandman Do you plan on removing that “Force speed” scene entirely in The Phantom Menace? This power only exists just to get Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon to escape, and is never used ever again.

Not from the Purist Cut. Though ill try it for the Revised Cut if its something the community doesn’t like. Im sure it’s an easy cut

The force push will get pulled out. Was just trying some stuff to see how people felt about it, whether the idea or the implementation. I do plan on fixing all of those the best i can. Some things i would like to learn Blender to do properly. I want the cgi to not be so flat and clean.
As far as the Attack on Theed, are you referring to the Purist Cut trailer or the other trailers? The Purist Cut will only have scenes from the movie, no new scenes. If those scenes in that trailer are what you mean lmk. If you mean the other ones, yes they need work and likely wont make the final version. I would like to try to use Blender instead for those scenes to pull off what i really want.
Feel free to give completely honest input, i really appreciate it. I would like to make these as good as possible

Need help color grading a scene.
Time

Idk if you ever got past this but there are ways to do it. I use After Effects and Davinci Resolve. In Resolve, you can create Nodes and select specific sections/colors within the image instead of adjusting the color to the entire image. You can find videos on youtube about Resolve and using nodes.
Another way you could do it is in After Effects by first creating an adjustment layer to do your over all color grade. Then create a second adjustment layer and do a “change color to” feature. Select the color you want to change and then mask around just the lightsaber so no other part of your image is affected. You can also go over the lightsaber and rerotoscope it. As far as i know this is always done as a screen layer, so it will interact with the color underneath it. So doing your “change color to” may still be needed depending on what color your changing the lightsaber to.

A quick suggestion for ROTJ:R, maybe throw in a reference to Thrawn in the background displays or see if you can add the Rebel’s Ghost ship in the Battle of Endor. It would be quite a treat for fans of Star Wars Rebels. ESB:R is a masterpiece. Wishing you all the best on ROTJ:R Ady!

Chopper is already in ESB:R 😉

Will you be fixing the close up shot of the Hero saber? Though i like the clean look, i personally love the dirty look of the Obiwan hilt he’s holding through most of the movie. Also cause it’s all silver instead of brass. It’s only one or two close up scenes though, so just curious. Also, since we’re on the subject. Which version of the Hero saber do you prefer?

Great work! I suggest you try and color-grade the planet so it closely matches the color-timing of the surrounding elements of that scene (In that case, its teal-bluish)

Absolutely and thank you! Still some steps to go, and lots to go as far as sizing to the scenes, movement, stars, etc. I just really wanted to show a better HD look at the planet and how itll look with in the film. Give a better idea on why im trying to fix the planets (So flat, and no detail). Plus i was sharing the info on the app so others could learn if interested, so i wanted a better look for that too. No color grading has been done to the planet yet though, other than picking the color of the atmosphere and the saturation pulled down. Once I color grade and i get the positions and everything else set, post a video to show it in action.

If any one is curious how the planet was done and would like to do such things in their own edits, but in their own ways. Well, i like sharing so.

Orb App tutorial with link on page for app.

Map.

It’s a free Orb effect you can get for After Effects. You can pick up 6k-8k maps from Nasa’s site. Or you can look around online and find other maps that have been made for use of people. You could do a death star if you play with it right.

One thing that I don’t really like but I understand is the warping in the trailer for the Force Pushes. What was the impetus for it

Just trying things. Much of the Prequels has static shots so i was trying to add impact where i could in the films. If it’s not working for people i can definitely pull it, or try a different effect?

Thank you! This isn’t final yet. Still playing with some settings and tweaks but wanted to see how its looking within the film. Really appreciate the feed back! Some of this if done right will allow me to create some new shots for the Prequels. Really want to make these as different as possible.

It should be noted that if you intend to lift chunks directly from another person’s edit, you should try to get permission from them first, and absolutely credit them either way.

Even when redoing ideas from others, i my self am crediting original source of idea. Took the time to do “do diligence” and scroll through every page of Prequel Edit idea thread. Lots of great ideas, though i wanted to redo the scenes i liked to make them my own, while crediting person who originally put forth the idea. Seems respectful and inclusive to the community.

Pedant moment, but it’s actually the other way around. Blue is a primary color in light but cyan is a primary color in dyes and painting (elementary school is just straight teaching it wrong).

Oops, i knew i typed something wrong. Yes, you are right. And what he means by teaching us wrong, in paint, Red, Yellow, and Blue don’t make Black like they should. You have to mix the colors like cmyk.

I’m intrigued! The prequels could definitely do with a nice colour correction. I think you’ve got the right idea but some the colours don’t seem… accurate. Does that make sense? Definitely too much blue sometimes (as already mentioned) but other colours as well seem a little off. I wish I knew more about all of this to properly explain what I’m thinking. Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving what I’m seeing!

Keep up the good work!

https://www.dummies.com/photography/photo-software/correcting-colors-in-your-digital-images/

Follow the pic with the color sliders. Its pretty easy, just takes time and practice. Plus every one will have slightly different taste. If you think something is too blue, you must determine if its too blue or too cyan. Too blue, you pull blue and get more yellow, too much Cyan, you add red. You will have to balance other colors usually though. Blue in the paint spectrum isn’t the same as in light. In light, Blue is not a primary color, Cyan is. Blue is closer to magenta. In light, all the colors together make white. You may choose to adjust saturation though as well, as grey wont look grey if your saturation is too high. Be mindful of your white areas, and lighting of the room or shot. If they are outside in the middle of a sunny day, then whites should be white. Other than their shadowed area. If it is sunset, then a white shirt for exp, shouldn’t be white anymore, it should be hues of orange and reds.
This is why so many people were fooled by that Gold/purple dress photo. Some peoples brains weren’t figuring out the light source of the scene and their brain was color correcting the image for them. The lighting their brain wasn’t picking up was giving the gold color in their mind.
So always be mindful of the lighting of the room and what light sources are in the room. If you can, get a female to help. Women have better eyes for color than men do. I’ve worked in photo development for high end professionals and also in paint, its a proven fact we knew of in each profession and we would even do fun test. They have wider spectrum they’re able to notice. Pretty cool.

Always good to make sure you’re not color blind too. Something men tend to suffer.

For those curious i plan on replacing most of the planets. This is a test run at some of the vfx, starfield, etc. Still working on all the maps and bumpmaps needed for all the planets. Its done in 4k though so it has a lot of detail at closer zooms.

Eventually i would like to create a couple blocks or miles of city for both Theed and Coruscant. This way ill be able to eventually create the ships and such and be able to create new shots of dog fighting through the city and over. I would like to have ships weave around buildings, so this is the only way to go. I would also like to improve the chase in ATOC. Let me know any thoughts. I think i need to ease the grain up and fix the starfield some along with the glow around the planet, if there is anything else lmk and hope you enjoy 😃

What do you mean by “easing the grain up”? Adding more grain?

No, reducing the grain.
