Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

These are called protection masters because they can be used to create a new negative if the original is lost or destroyed.  The quality is not as good however.

Though not as good as using the Original Negative, a pretty good quality negative can come out of a protection master, right? The quality would be something passable for a home video release on Blu-Ray right?

MattmanOmega's Rebellion Collection & 720p AVCHD of OT Theatrical Vers. (Released)

Hey OmegaMattman, thank you for making this set. It's quite interesting, especially with all the features and audio tracks. I look forward to downloading it soon.

By the way, what do you want the thread title to be:

Mattmanalpha's Rebellion Collection and 720p AVCHD of ESB: Theatrical Version

or

OmegaMattman's Rebellion Collection and 720p AVCHD of ESB: Theatrical Version?

It was a timecoded copy, simply meant so all the members could tell each other exactly what they were working on down to each frame.  It was just a reference, it wasn't the actual video they were working with.  I believe it was made from the video they were working with, but it was much lower quality since it was just meant to be a timecode copy.

Ahh... gotcha. How much lower is it? Despite its lower quality, would it still have been better than most laserdisc preservations or the GOUT?

If he is doing 720P versions its great that someone is offering the originals and the Old documentaries since the Blu Ray is going to be the 2004 video.

So far, he's only done ESB in 720p. Although, he says that if it gets a positive response he'll do ANH and ROTJ, which may be harder since their GOUT versions don't appear to look as good. Although, his preservation is one worthy of remembrance.

Thanks for the screen shots, Jetrell Fo! I appreciate how he gave this website credit. It's a nice touch :-) but did he insert that into the movie credits or afterwards as a special feature or something?

EDIT: Skyjedi, I was under the assumption that the source for the GOUT, as well as the laserdiscs, was a negative derived from a worn interpositive, with a grainy picture from much use.

I was aware of Zion announcing that he may release a raw capture, which I am anxiously awaiting; however, from skyjedi's post, it seems that there was another version, which he says was "leaked." Does anyone have this "leaked" version or am I misunderstanding skyjedi?

Did anything ever get released besides the timecode leaked version ?

*Spits out tea* Wait, what timecode leaked version? Is that a joke? Sorry, I'm relatively new here (registered in November) and not up to speed on random leaked versions. Well... why not just post this on the newsgroups? Can I have a copy?

I didn't know there were any 2 Technicolor prints. I assumed that there are two that we know about, not two left in existence. It would really be a tragedy if Lucas took it back and had it destroyed. Although, this new source gives me hope that even if that happened, the original version of Star Wars would still be out there.

Anyway, I know I've brought this up twice before but no one has really answered my question, are we sure that the Youtube user rafiguroian just filmed the beginning of the Senator Theater screening (as shown on Youtube) and not the whole thing? If he did, that would be an excellent source for color timing, reference, etc.

Not that I'm an expert but I'd say the 1977 opening crawl for Star Wars is a recreation.  It looks really nice though.

Thanks for reviewing the set, Jetrell Fo. To be honest, I didn't expect much but it still looks like it's worth checking out.

Although, mattmanalpha says the GOUT is the main source. Isn't it? Why would he recreate the 1977 crawl if it was already there? If you mean the 1981 crawl, then I thought he said he got that one from the 1993 laserdisc.

Apparently, an unofficial film restoration may be in the works, judging from the high resolution of that photo; though, mverta doesn't want to share for fear of legal trouble.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know definitively where that photo comes from? Is it a film print or a digital scan of one? It doesn't look like any normal HD source I've ever seen.

The fact that he has the DVD version completed, but is sitting on it, is more depressing than if he'd never done it in the first place.

If indeed he "really" has a completed DVD, until we see it, I have my own opinion of not believing it.

I personally believe him. I wonder if it'll end up leaking out (ala Editdroid set). While I respect his decision and know that he has the right not to release it, I find myself screaming: (note that I didn't personally create this photo)
