'Legacy' by X0-1138 - a fake and trolling 'project'

True. I had an idea last night. Remember how Arnie d. was offering his X9 captures of the JSC to anyone who would finish the project. Maybe you could average a capture of the X0 with a capture from the X9. After all, they are the best laserdisc players ever made. The results may be astounding if someone had the right equipment to make this happen...

Although, yes. These laserdiscs are limited but that's no reason not to try pushing the limit. :-D

It's already IVTC'd, basically just encoding left if I decided to just upload it as it is. I'm not sure I get what you mean by a "rudimentary '04 bootleg style transfer"?... So, I'm leaning towards just leaving it as it is. IVTC'd and resized from a 5-cap median.

Oh sorry by rudimentary '04 style bootleg; I meant that I would be happy even with a quality similar to the low quality transfers that used to appear on eBay; however, obviously, this is much better and the fact you did a 5-cap median and IVTC'ing is nothing sort of amazing for me. It's great that this laserdisc could be preserved.

I do agree with Murry Sparkles. Lee Thorogood's set does look pretty sweet and it has 5.1 sound, which is far better than the 2004 DVD's. You can get it on the Newsgroups and it's well worth your time. Alternatively, you can try the Reivax Digital Broadcast for ANH, where the links are available on tehparadox.

If you love the Reivax and don't notice the smearing, go for the G'Kar of ESB and ROTJ, available on torrent sites. Glad to see an old member back by the way. A lot's changed since '05.

+1 with bkev. Don't lump a whole generation as uncultured. Trust me eventually reason will win out even with today's kids. As they mature, they'll naturally realize what's better.

(In case, anyone's wondering, yes I am part of the Post-SE generation and I do like the real Original Trilogy much better)...

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what happened with this but please don't cancel this. Don't feel the need to exactly replicate Black Magic or complexly average it with the GOUT; this is your project not exactly what the old X0 was. A fantastic IVTC'ed X0 transfer of the JSC would be more than enough. If it bothers you, you don't even need to do audio work or color correction.

I agree with ChainsawAsh in the fact that the GOUT has been taken to it's limit. However the potential of the JSC is relatively unexplored. A stellar transfer might be of use to future projects. If someone eventually discovers a way to "Black Magic" this, then this will be available for them to work with. The JSC has after all, no clipped whites or smearing. It will be interesting to see how near GOUT quality one can extract from it.

As for using the fixed Special Widescreen Edition, Mallwalker and msycamore have described its many issues, from crosstalk to rainbowing. Msycamore seems to be doing a transfer of it, so we may learn more about that particular release in the near future. To cut to the chase, the JSC may be a better source... for the moment.

I do agree with the two above posters. Even raw transfers would be of interest!

Anyway, when I find the time to upload this for you, do you want to have it color corrected or do you just want me to release it as it is, along with a bright canyon where R2 get captured?

I do know that some people enjoy to just have the transfers preserved as is, so I was just wondering.

Oh wow that was fast for you to capture it. My advice is not to color correct it, as this release does have such an interesting color palette; furthermore, it's the palette I saw the Unaltered ANH as a child. The sunset is mindblowingly different and that's just utterly spectacular.

This definitely has a certain nostalgia to it and I would have just a capture, IVTC'ed if you have time. This release has never been transferred and it would be fantastic to see even a rudimentary '04 bootleg style transfer of it; if your samples are any indication, this will be well-received. It's fascinating seeing ANH with no crushed blacks or smearing, even if you have less detail.

in the end it will be just another LD-transfer, but I think some of you will appreciate to have this smearfree alternative anyway, I know that I will. I could of course apply some anti-aliasing, filter out the dot-crawl and rainbowing, but I think it will hurt more than it will help.

I say go for anything you can do; knowing your work, it will be amazing. You are right in saying that this is a smearfree alternative. This smearfree but lower quality route was taken by the V8 and never picked up on. It would be fantastic to see some progress.

Glad you decided to transfer the JSC, as others have the GOUT/Def. Collection handled already. It was already very impressive how nice the V8 transfer looked so with an X0...

You mentioned you are doing color correction. How far are you going with that? The JSC has a unique color palette. Even though it is not theatrically accurate it is interesting. For example, the binary sunset looks unique without some tints...

If you eventually need one, I'd be willing to be a tester of this, BTW.

What's your Personal Canon?
Time

Interesting thread. My personal cannon (in chronological order) is:

  1. Star Wars: Episode I- Shadow of the Sith (by L8wtr)
  2. Star Wars: Episode II- The Republic Divided (by L8wtr)
  3. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Animated Series (the 2005/2006 one)
  4. Star Wars: Episode III- Dark Force Rising (by KERR)
  5. Star Wars: Revisited
  6. Star Wars: The Holiday Special (I actually like to believe that this is the story told from Lumpy's Point of View and Imagination and that what really happened was a bit more sinister.)
  7. The Empire Strikes Back: Adywan's Theatrical Reconstruction (This is one of the versions to depict Hoth to be perfectly white).
  8. Star Wars: Episode IV- Return of the Jedi Theatrical Version
  9. Star Wars Battlefront II (especially parts like Wampas attacking Rebels)

Well, I'm open to suggestions as to which laserdiscs are the best quality.

The Definitive Collections probably have the best quality but unless you can muster more quality out of than the GOUT, it would be similar to Zion's raw capture, as said. The laserdiscs will tend to be lower quality (in most places) since the GOUT was sourced from the laserdisc master.

I know that many people will disagree with me but I agree with toho-scope. A JSC transfer may be interesting, especially upscaled to 1080p. It is older and a less clear picture but won't have the smearing that the upscale might emphasize. The colors also are unique (eg. Hoth is completely white).

In any case, good luck on this project!

Oh my; those new changes are truly awful. Vader saying "No!"; I wouldn't even expect that of a bad fan edit... Obi-Wan's new call is way too overemphasized. It seems that Frink shouldn't do a version of Episodes IV-VI; these are humorous enough.

It would be truly mind boggling if people defended these changes...

Info: X-Men Animated Series Pilot "Sneak Peak" & "No Mutant" Original Version (FOUND!)
Time

Nice! You are a god-save, Asaki! It's nice that these get released. I looked over both of these and you're right they are the original versions. They are low quality but it's fine. This is awesome!

If I ever see whether or not the No Mutant Is An Island DVD has the original version, I'll report it here.

*Changed the Thread Title BTW*
