Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?

I don't know where that have been established, both Reivax and Flunk is said to be professional digital beta tape transfers rather than captured broadcasts.

Smearing on the '97 SE has been a main topic on the last few pages of Dark Jedi's Special Edition V2 thread, as he decided to go to the laserdiscs, which he believed lacked the broadcast's smearing. Pages 13, 14, and 15 have discussions about smearing.

As for where I thought it was established that the smearing was a result of the capture method, Adywan said the following on page 14 of aforementioned thread:

adywan said:

The smearing is caused by the crappy capture software available at the time. The TV PC cards really couldn't handle and movement and this is why the smearing occurred.

If the laserdiscs indeed do have the smearing, Dark Jedi's upconversion would surely highlight this flaw... Then the only hope for a good quality '97 SE would be a reconstruction, such as Harmy's Despecialized Editions.

If there was way to use one of the LD captures to enhance the GOUT, we might be able to clean it up in a fairly automated way. I'd say a PAL ld would be the best option, especially if it was transferred frame for frame (which speeds it up, but preserves the frames).

So you're suggesting fixing the GOUT's motion problems with other laserdisc sources? Interesting. I believe this is similar to what Laserman was trying to do in the XO Project.

However, he was using the completely DVNR-free JSC to try to enhance the GOUT, not the PAL laserdiscs... I think.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

I completely agree with you bkev. The prequel Yodas can't hold a candle to the original puppet. At least the AOTC Yoda seemed to be the right size and not always angry, I would have been find with him if not for the lightsaber battle at the end. ROTS Yoda looks too small and new TPM Yoda looks too angry. The original TPM Yoda looks... strange.

Note that is only a test shot. Might be different and more grand ;)

Still... for a test shot it's amazing. The grander the Death Star looks the better. The visuals should correspond to how it's the main threat of the movie... that is make it look huge and a killer.

When the Falcon approaches the Death Star, what do you think of having the Death Star's laser seem to be facing it, so as to heighten the sense of grave danger?

I was curious though, how people would feel about the battle simply being moved to right after QuiGon and Obiwan hook up with Jar Jar. I could cut Jar Jar from the battle and make it look like the Gungans lose.

Interesting. Personally I think that would probably be the best place for the battle but I am neutral as to whether or not it should be included. If it is included, Jar Jar could appear as somewhat of a deserter and the Trade Federation would appear more vicious.

Out of curiosity, what did you think of my reorganized climax idea?

But was the picture letterboxed? If not.... could it have been DJ's v3 or something? Harmy's Despecialized?

If you look back on the last page you'll see this:

Out of curiosity, Adywan, are you sure it is the GOUT; it would be unbelievable if someone dared to play Harmy's Despecialized, your Reconstruction, or DJ's V3.

adywan said:

yeh, it was defiantly the GOUT they were playing.

If anybody was interested, I dunno if this edit was really followed much or anything.  But if you guys were interested I've decided to take this up again.  I know it's been a while.  But I feel I could make a good edit of this film.  All the existing edits of this film out are... good.

As a person who likes fan edits, it's always good to hear of a new Return of the Jedi one. I frankly don't understand why people stay away from editing it even though it has flaws just like the Prequels. In any case, I can't wait to see your version of it.

Also thanks Aluminum Falcon, I will be using that, and if I ever get this finished you shall receive an XVID of the first draft.

Yay! Thank you.

That story's fantastic, Adywan. It's good to know that some of the general populace prefers playing the theatrical version. After all, the GOUT has no crushed blacks or color issues...

Nice comparison. I guess Lucas is adamant about that color timing. I suppose I'm happy that there were the little color corrections in terms of lightsabers... still. By the way, did anyone notice that that article said that the TPM disc had the scenes from the DVD as well? If true, that would be fantastic news and probably true of the rest of the Prequel Trilogy deleted scenes.

or this:

Before you head to the comments to ask, yes, Greedo still shoots first in this version (although you may still see an original version of that scene in the set – hint, hint).

These guys make the same allusion but with an added details of it being in the deleted scenes:

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/oi-star-wars-20110825-1jb1v.html

(Oh, and for purists: Star Wars' creator has let the scene run long enough to finally clear up a long-debated point: yep, Han shot first.)

Or Han's the only one to shoot... ...wait to see if it's the Lost Cut b/w or color. maybe this site will answer that question.

I believe the cantina scene only exists in that extended format within the Lost Cut, so it will be black and white. Wasn't there some black and white footage of Jenny and Han in another trailer, proving that it will be black and white, albeit possibly nicer and with less film artifacts?

Like in the deleted scene from the CD-Rom, Han is the only one to shoot (an English-talking) Greedo.

This does not make sense, my friends.

Perhaps the awful cyan tint neutralized the yellow laser?

It's the IB prints and 70mm that really draw out the color because I don't think the general 35mm would have had the same density.

Hmm so what you're saying is that the people who saw it in 70mm and IB prints would have a completely different experience than those who just saw 35mm prints? If the original trilogy, would it be restored to look like the 70mm/IB prints or 35mm then; if the 70mm/IB prints drew out extra color then does that mean the less colorful 35mm is closer to the cinematographer's intentions?

Idea & Info: Apocalypse Now OAR

But I freaking love my 93 WS LD. Color is spot on imo, and it supposedly has the full 70mm 4.2 just literally transferred as close as possible to the digital tracks. Freaking powerful! Destroys every DVD and even my 5.1 reissue LD.

Hmm.. thanks captainsolo. I suppose I will end up picking the Apocalypse Now laserdisc after all. The Blu-Ray does have some annoying grain reduction...
