Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

well my set came today...

How did you get it so early?

That said, I have only watched TPM so far (working through them in order, with my oh-so-tolerant wife...well, it was her who bought them for my birthday haha) and the picture quality is fantastic.

So were the rumors of DVNR greatly exaggerated? It would be great if at least the prequels had nice-looking transfers.

Anyway, overall, very happy so far and can't wait o see what the rest looks like

Have you checked the deleted scenes yet?

Methods for colour matching/colour grading
Time

It does seem to work quite effectively. You're right about being able to crop out the bottom, so that will be no issue. Although, now I suppose we should figure out on where to use it.

Those frames from Lee Thororgood's version looked a tad bit too blue for my taste. Do you mind testing the process on a scene where Lee Thorogood more radically shifted the color like maybe the sunset scene or the Death Star scenes; (I don't know specifics, I haven't seen it.)

Help: looking for... 'Army of Darkness' and other Various Cuts
Time

I take it that the picture is open matte then. Is it confirmed that the only differences from the theatrical cut are the Sheila dress-ripping scene and a bonus of the alternate end?

On that topic, does anyone know whether or not the Full Screen version on the Anchor Bay DVDs was open matte or cropped?

The blu rays are already being sold here in Mexico, a friend of mine bought it.

Really? Were they officially released in Mexico or are the stores violating release date? It's curious that those haven't been pirated yet as they're quite the anticipated feature.

For those planning to buy the set just for the deleted scenes, you should reconsider, it's really not worth it. Check them out on youtube first or something. My feeling is that most will be dissapointed by the deleted scenes.

I probably will check them out just on YouTube. I wonder how long till videos start surfacing...

Also, Wicket's eyes are truly terrifying.

LOL.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

A rental tape actually would be a good source. They're generally durable and would certainly be better than the recording at present. If one resurfaces, it may be a worthy thing to get. For example, my Star Wars 1982 Rental VHS plays flawlessly like a brand new video and physically looks fantastic.

LOL msycamore at that anecdote involving the rental tapes. You didn't happen to take anything valuable. Did you?

People really seem to be interested in the deleted scenes aspect of the Blu-Ray set. Lucas probably is counting on this to make the set sell. After the EW ESB scene was released, I posted a color corrected version on YouTube:

It's been like two days but this thing already has 39,051 views... Someone even ripped my color corrected version off and it's on whatculture.com...

EDIT: By the way, excuse the "in retrospect" shoddy color collection. It was late at night and I was mostly trying to get rid of the yellow-ness...

Return of the Jedi - The Spence Final Cut (Released)

fixed version is going to happen eventually, but it might be a little while. I plan to rerelease all of my SW edits in HD with new changes and added deleted scenes from the Blu-Rays.

That sounds utterly fantastic! HD edits would be astounding. Are you planning to take a shot at editing ANH or ESB; maybe an alternate version with the deleted scenes back in and some pacing cuts? Most people tend to consider them perfect but I always love to see a different version.

There are some things I want to change, the music over Vader's death will go back to the original version

Great news!

And again, I'm going to use HD quality, probably Harmy's despecialized edition if he's cool with it.

That would be a fantastic base, as the colors on those are spot on. You also don't need to worry about removing any of the SE changes yourself.

Harmy's a pretty understanding fellow. If you ask nicely, I'm pretty sure he'll be cool with it.

Duel of the Fates (* unfinished project *)

Duel of the Fates is a huge project for me, one that will take a while to complete. What may end up happening is I continue to work on that in the background while releasing TPM and re-releasing my other Star Wars edits, with fixes, addition of new deleted scenes, and HD picture quality. This includes the revised version of ROTJ. I got some pretty cool ideas at play here, and I may be able to make my perfect version of the prequels now. The one that won't change much is probably ROTS, I'm pretty happy with that as is with some little changes.

Sounds like a sound game plan, Spence! I can't wait to see the fruits of your labor.
