Best viewing order to introduce Star Wars to children?
Time

I’ll give you my suggestion, which is purely based off my childhood experience. I was 4 years old when TPM came out. Vaguely recall having it on VHS, but I also had SE 97 VHS. You know what movie I played the most? Return of the Jedi. Why? The third act, especially for the space battle. Then eventually AotC came out on DVD. You know what movie I replayed the most? AotC. Flashy and more colorful, to me at the time at least. And boy, once I got my hands on RotS, I played that on repeat so many time. Point I’m making is that, sure, introduce however you wish you to, establish the order (whether that’s release or chronological) but I’d highly encourage to let your kid freely choose which Episodes/Spin offs to watch over and over. Because honestly, trying to recapture that Vader/Luke twist these days will be rather difficult. There’s too many SW film’s now. So for a kid to invest their time into SW will make all the movies sorta run together in a blur. They will pick up on certain plot points, but it will most likely not land in the way people felt it way back in 1980, when there was only one SW movie to digest. At some point, for me at least, I never had that surprised moment of Vader revealing himself as Luke’s father. It’s like asking me when I learned what the color blue was. It’s simply integrated into my mind as commonplace knowledge. Even if you somehow managed to control the flow of when to show these movies are shown to your child, that doesn’t stop peers, the internet, and random strangers from spoiling it. That’s not to say it’s not impossible.

However, I think we’re missing the point of SW if we try to hard to have newcomers experience that shocking twist. I’ll tell you that instead SW overall had inspired me in so many ways. I drew countless drawings of the characters, the ships, and scenes. I made so many different objects from that universe with creativity. My imagination was fueled! I believe that’s more cherishible as a parent, to see your child have those imaginative gears running. They will not being able to fully comprenend the nuances of the story, but that’s totally normal, and will come with years under their belt. SW is supposed to evoke a sense of adventure and fun, and a child will fully absorb themselves into it way more than an adult. Then once they’re of adult age, they will be able to express the complaints you also have with the franchise 😂

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Video Game)
Time

Huh, I had no idea Chris Avellone was part of this project. I also have no experience with any of the games he’s helped work on past Fallout: New Vegas. But, I do find it a bit reliving knowing he’s had some part in Jedi: Fallen Order. While I don’t think this particular title will have the depth KOTOR II had, where Chris was heavily involved with, and with arguably the best video game written characters in a Star Wars story, at least some of his writing creativity will shine through. Just read this article here:

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Video Game)

Just watched the extended demo, and it’s still difficult for me to fully be on-board. At the same time, I’m not totally opposed to it. I was slightly relived to see dialogue… choices. The days of lines and lines of dialogue choice I suppose are of the past. However, it’s a bit of a let down to see the dialogue options whittled down to two, not to mention seem to have a similar issue that Fallout 4. Essentially, it looks like you’re merely choosing a tone of the conversation rather than moving the conversation. How varied can we make this main protagonist? Probably not much. I’m not specifically saying we need light/darkside alternate routes, although the freedom to do so would make replayability more appealing. Being able to make decisions that will trigger ripples into the story, where certain plot points open up, and some close off, is ideal. Adds more to the thrill of the gaming experience.

However, it looks more like a straight shot story. I guess the reality is that yeah, it’s a light RPG. You’re simply following Cal’s journey rather than immersing yourself into a journey. And that stings a bit because it’s a similar issue I had with the Mass Effect series. Granted, that game franchise has way more RPG flexibility compared to this game, but ultimately, the main protagonist is predefined. That’s probably the symptom of having the character voiced. Basically what I’m saying is that it’s hard for me to get invested in these kind of games. I miss the feeling of the story and choices being reflective of yourself, and seeing how the characters reacted to that, either with praise or disdain.

I will say that the only thing that stood out to me was the galaxy map. That part definitely takes me back to KOTOR. Wonder if there’s an order that has to be followed or the player will freely choose what order of planets to go to. I’m going to assume the latter.

If this game has an ounce of that homely feeling of walking around your ship… Talking to your companions and what not, I’d definitely welcome that. Besides KOTOR, Mass Effect also had that element.

It just still lingering in my mind that it will be using too many cutscenes as a crutch to propel the story to make it seem “cinematic” and therefore feel like a hollow RPG.

I don’t know how to answer?

Are you interested in a specific character?

Is there a rumor that you heard that you may want to be true?

Oh I meant just vaguely. Like do you personally think this will be a really weird, or awful, or inventive, etc way to end this trilogy? Asking since apparently Abrams is wanting be less orthodox with this installment, even more so than Rian Johnson. Unless that’s just a rubbish rumor too.

I personally don’t think having the Falcon destroyed is too far out of the question, as I’m actually thinking that’s a more sensible story choice to do. a la Back to the Future Part III.

Surely having the spectrum of seeing the Falcon in new shiny glory in Solo, and the banged up held together ol’ reliable in the OT and the last two ST, a shipwreck could be the final form.

The only true trustworthy spoiler source for TROS is RedLetterMedia. According to them, we will get time travel and it will get Endgame treatment! For my speculation, Than… No, Palpatine wants to harvest all Skywalker lightsaber crystals, and once he has all of them… He will become the most powerful Chosen One in the galaxy! Meanwhile, Rey and the gang have to figure out how to beat Palpatine at his own game and collect these crystals before he does! Time is of the essence to prevent Palpatine from Snap! Crackling! And popping his… old joints. (it’s a long time ago in a galaxy far far far away, so I don’t think they invented infinity gauntlets)

Or I’ll just wait for a more solid trailer to come out.

Rian Johnson to Head New Star Wars Trilogy
Time

Star Wars has grown bigger under Disney, and so has the fan base. Plus look where you’re at on the internet. The whole premise behind this forum built on the presumed cynicism that George Lucas, for its time, and Disney will never release a quality set of the unaltered trilogy. A yearning to return to a time of sweet nostalgia, but yet denied from The Maker. All this baggage Star Wars carries amounts to more cynicism, pervading across years and generations.
Of course, thankfully, technology caught up to allow the fans control over the recovery of what was.

Rian Johnson to Head New Star Wars Trilogy
Time

I personally thought he poorly juggled Rey, Kylo, Finn, and Rose. Luke in TLJ seemed like one of the few quality aspects of the film. I kinda think he was very scared to mess up Luke’s character and therefore spent a lot of time with that part of the story. Meanwhile, the other newer characters basically got second-rate care. None of these characters got me excited for the next film, unlike in TFA.

That said, I have no solid ill-preconceptions against Rian Johnson. TLJ was a massive undertaking, and from what I understand, the first blockbuster he directed (cause other than that, there’s Looper and a Breaking Bad episode?) So I’m willing to give him another crack at SW film making. Perhaps he will take what experience he had with TLJ and improve with his trilogy.

In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?

Looking back at this thread, three and some years on, I think we can probably safely put to rest that the new Williams themes aren’t hummable/memorable? I think Rey’s theme, Kylo’s themes, and the Resistance march have all joined the pantheon of all-time great Star Wars music. Maybe there’s a nit to pick with the mix, but in terms of things TFA nailed, I think the music in general is near the top.

Yes actually, it’s amusing to read our interaction years prior and can happily concede to that yes, I do find TFA’s (and perhaps an extension to TLJ) being just as worthy as any of the other SW scores.

If you could change one thing about every movie, what would it be?
Time

TPM: Don’t kill Maul
AtoC: Maul in, so no need for Dooku. As Anakin becomes stronger, so does Maul. Allows Palpatine to truly monitor which one is becoming more powerful.
RotS: Anakin kills Maul out of hatred, making him have an awakening that millions had to suffer at the hands of Maul, the Jedi are weak, thus the dark side can truly save Padme.
ANH: Obi-Wan holds onto Anakin’s old saber (Luke too timid to carry around some ancient weapon he doesn’t know how to use correctly), thus when Vader strikes down Obi Wan, Vader takes back his old light saber. Vader slices Obi Wans saber, Luke comes across it, now determined to learn how a lightsaber truly works, the ins and out, how to master it, hoping to avenge Obi Wan, and get back his fathers saber that Vader ‘stole.’
ESB: Vader toys with Luke by ditching the red saber for a bit during their duel. Instead continuing the fight with his old Anakin saber against Luke with a repaired Obi Wan saber. Since both saber colors are blue, it’s a symbolic way of showing a relationship; once from a time when Obi Wan and Anakin fought side by side. Now it shows that Luke is related to Vader.
RotJ: Insert cliche Wookiee planet idea instead of ewoks. Always loved the assault on the DSII.
TFA: Starkiller Base is disabled, not destroyed and instead the Resistance drives FO from it, thus securing control.
TLJ: 1-2 year time gap (anything to get away from instant “where we last left off” continuation). This time gap opens up so many storylines and character development to sprout.

It seems like the last couple weeks have essentially gotten us to a pretty solid place in terms of basic plotting and motivation for the movie.

The most intriguing thing to me, honestly, is the idea that the movie might not start with the main title and scroll, but a flashback following the “A long time ago” card, and then smash cut to the main title at the end of the flashback, like Rogue One.

I felt disturbance in the fandom, as if a few thousand exclaimed, “THE SACRED CRAWL TEXT!” and never silenced.

The Rise of Skywalker box office results: predictions and expectations

Very intriguing data here and analysis! It definitely lines up well with my personal interest with Disney Star Wars. I remember eagerly replaying trailers for TFA, RO, and TLJ, as I was excited and already conjuring up in my head how the stories would unfold. Although I do not dislike TLJ, it did hammer a nail into the coffin for my enthusiasm for Star Wars. Solo began the first time I was not excited nor interested in seeing a SW film in theaters. I’ll still most likely see TROS opening week, but just as the data shows, it paints the hollow interest I have left for the way the franchise continues to run.

That book on the left was the first (and last) EU book I read in my early teens. I always loved that cover picture mainly because of the Falcon. Just something tragically beautiful seeing it damaged; it’s probably why in one of the TFA trailers, I thought they were going for that imagery when the Falcon was skidding through the snowy landscape of Starkiller Base.
