I'm not really thrilled about doing a comprehensive list. There are just so many cuts that it seems like a huge headache. Did you do one for your Matrix edits? And I've found that when I read those lists before watching an edit, I'm hyper aware of the edits, and not as able to just enjoy the movie the first time through. I want to avoid that. But I suppose I should at least do an overview of the changes.

A commentary track could be fun though. I heard MagnoliaFan did a couple explaining his prequel edit decisions. Have you seen those?

Unfortunately Reedemd doesn't fit in with the ending of SoJ.

BTW, is the 24th your birthday? If so, join the club.

No, actully my birthday is the 11th. I'm having the party on the 24th to give me some more time on SoJ.

Thanks!

I checked out Supeman Redeemd last night. ADM did a very good job of turning both those movies into one coherant movie. Considering the source footage, the result is pretty amazing.

Thanks! Yeah, it's important for me that the humor that doesn't work is cut out of this edit, as much as possible. This Barney Fife impersonation that the deputy does is, to me, one of the lower points of Superman 2. All his scenes are gone and now I'm still able to show Zod and crew leave the diner.

Although it's a couple weeks late, as promised here's an example of the type of effects to expect in SoJ:

Effects Shot Comparison

Few of my effects will look like FX shots. My hope is that a viewer who doesn't know the Superman movies very well won't notice that anything's been changed.

By the way, the shot above isn't finalized yet. More tweeking will be done. And this shot already took about 3x the time I though it would, which means despite constantly working on it, this project is behind schedule. I'm sorry to say that a February release is highly unlikely. I probably won't set any more deadlines. It will be released when I'm completely happy with the final product, no matter how long that takes.

For anyone anxious to see this edit, I'm throwing a test screening in San Diego on Saturday, February 24th. If you'd like to come send me a PM. It will be shown on a top of the line projection home theatre system with stadium couch seating, and afterwards I'll ask for your comments. Keep in mind this will be a draft version with few of the effects, and a temporary audio mix. This will probably be the only time I'll show SoJ before it's completed. And if you can't make it, I'm sorry but I won't be sending out copies of the test screened version.

By the way, this test screening is just the first part of my birthday film marathon, where I will be showing only films not commercially available in the US, including The Thief and the Cobbler, The Matrix Squared, and the uncensored Eyes Wide Shut, among others. If you come to the test screening you're welcome to stick around for the whole marathon.

Thanks for your support!

p.s. If anyone has experience with After Effects, and wants to help out with this project, please PM me. I'm willing to farm out some work if it means I can release this earlier without compromising the quality.

Thanks! And don't worry, it's not vaporware. I'm just taking my time to get it right. I got back from vacation yesterday, and worked on it a little last night and a couple hours tonight. Hopefully I'll have an effects shot to show everyone later in the week.

So this has been my only hobby for the last month or so. Apart from work and hanging out with the family, I've only been editing Superman. And I'm really happy with the progress. I like the direction this film went ever since the Donner cut came out. And moving to using Premiere was the right choice. I've gotten a lot done, quicker. I just loaded up premiere and womble at the same time to compare the differences. There are easily 10 times as many edits in the new version. I've deleted more stuff, re-arranged things, and re-added some of the stuff that I took out before. Right now the edit is just under 3 hours, not counting the end credits. It may get a little longer or maybe shorter, but not by much. The overwhelming majority of the cuts are done. There are just a few rough scenes that need ironing or patching. I'm going on vacation right now and will be back on the 15th to work on the effects. After Effects is a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to getting back!

Well, the original plan was to release SoJ 1.0 before the Donner Cut, and then go back and incorporate parts of the Donner Cut into a 2.0 version. Since I was late bringing it out, SoJ 1.0 will be a melding of 1, 2, Donner, and including some small clips from 3 (and possibly 4), and at least one line of dialog from Superman Returns.

But no, no significant changes. The end result is turning out longer than I expected, only because there is more great Jor-El scenes in the Donner cut than I expected. And since they re-did the effects in the Phantom Zone escape scene, I'll have to do a lot less special effects work.

I feel exactly the same way. And now that I've watched the movies 6 or 7 times, in bits, while editing, I feel that even more so. But the good parts stand out even stronger. Reeve, Kidder, Brando, and --heck, everyone's performance was SO good, and would stand up just as well today as it did then.

I dropped by a best buy to get the lester version (mainly for the 5.1 audio mix) and at the bottom of the rack, almost out of eyesight, and with no rack label was a 14 disc set! I almost didn't get it, because of the supposed problem with the sup3 disc, but I talked myself into it anyway. The checker said I was lucky because they thought they were out, and somebody found three in the back, and I was getting the last one.

Anyway, so I brought them home and popped in Sup3 and mine DOES have the commentary and the deleted scenes! So, I don't know if the problem was just with a certain batch, or if they've already fixed the issue.

Man, this set it awesome... Its giving me a lot of ideas.

Thats what the Son of Jor-El project is pretty much about: http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=11&threadid=5793.

Thanks! The problem with releasing more clips is that none of them have the audio fixed, which is something I'm planning to do at the end, after I've locked down the video edit. I may release a scene or two after I've started the audio master.

Wait till you get to the "de-powering" scene with Brando, and the final Brando scene a bit later. Fantastic stuff there. Great acting from Reeve, and, of course, Brando.

Yes, the Brando scenes are awesome. They really make the movie. I wasn't that impressed with much of the other stuff that was added. Some of Reeve's and Hackman's new voiceovers are horrible. I didn't care for the ending either. It was still very fun to watch, and it gave me a few good ideas.
