I’ve stared at people for 5+ seconds before. Unless I’m actively communicating with them, I, a gross creep, fully admit to having creepy intentions. I’m trying to be better, but then again I still have lots of pictures of some of my cute/attractive friends on my phone that they aren’t aware of, so I’m not doing so well.

EDIT: Why yes, this post is a cry for help.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have creepy intentions. It’s very easy to assume that you do regardless.

Intent absolutely matters, especially if it can put you on the path to unemployment. The feelings of the “victim” don’t cut it. Emphasis should be placed on intent and actual harm done to the person, not how they felt about it in the moment.

Human interaction is messy, and attempting to codify basic interactions like eye contact is absurd. I’m sure facial expressions as microaggressions will be here soon, if they’re not already.

“Someone made a mean face at me and I felt uncomfortable. I was unable to verbalize my feelings at the time like an adult would, so I internalized my trauma and now bring it to HR so you can deal with it for me, because it’s really me who’s the emotionally stunted one here.”

We’re basically training people to be socially inept. No more people-watching. Don’t get caught observing human behavior. Keep your face in your phone. If you become confused by the strange world of fellow humans, your employer will give you guidelines on how to behave if you accidentally make eye contact with someone and how to apologize if they feel threatened.

It’s all ridiculous and I feel sorry for kids growing up thinking this is normal. It’s not.

Well spend some time staring at all your female coworkers and let me know how it goes.

I can understand having a rule about how long one can look at someone.

Really? What’s the correct length of time allowed then?

Not exactly sure but certainly longer than 5 seconds. Perhaps 30 seconds?(note I am not saying that just beaue someone stares for less time should automatically mean they don’t get in trouble: context, circumstances, etc would depend)

30 seconds? Ha. Stare at your watch for 30 seconds. See how long it really is.

it is 30 seconds long.

You’ve missed the point again.

If you stared at a woman for 20 seconds you’d creep her right the fuck out.

Maybe, it depends upon the women, the circumstances, context, etc.

Of course. And a lot of dudes think they know what the woman thinks and what the circumstances is. And they’re wrong a lot of the time. Talk to a few women about this and you’ll hear lots of stories about dudes who are oblivious to how they’re making the woman feel.

What if you suspect they are doing something bad(like stealing or something), and you are keeping an eye on them as a result?

So you’d keep an eye on them by staring directly at them? All day?

not all day but maybe for longer than 5 seconds.

I’m starting to think you’ve never stared at someone for five full seconds.

considering that you think it is bad to stare at someone for five seconds or longer, it would be a good thing that I’ve never stared at someone for a five full seconds, right?

Sure.

I could never understand the hatred of Enterprise, and usually by the same people who say things like “Voyager is my favourite Trek show”. I truly liked the first three seasons, hated the last one, which interestingly enough seems to be the favourite season of most people.

Well this sounds pretty hate-worthy to me…

The first couple seasons kind of creep me out, it always felt like the focus was what compromising situation can we put T’Pol in this week?

I honestly don’t really remember anything like that, there were a few cringe-worthy decontamination scenes, there was just one episode where T’Pol was horny and tried to get somebody to f her, but that’s all I can remember.

She’s done more than try.

I’m not sure though if you’re referring to the time she contracted a microbe that prematurely made her enter pon farr (the Vulcan mating period) [http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Bounty_(episode)], or when she had sex with Commander Tucker and said later it was simply an experiment in mating rituals [http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Harbinger_(episode)].

But then, the latter happened in Season 3, after she and Trip were already becoming more and more close over the course of the season. Also Vulcans are essentially allergic to Trellium, which is on the ship to protect it from spacial anomalies, so it is constantly messing with the portion of her brain that controls reason and gives her an ability to contain her emotions.

Lol Star Trek.

https://work.qz.com/1306193/is-it-sexual-harassment-to-stare-at-a-coworker-the-advice-given-to-netflix-employees/

Quartz reached out to Netflix to confirm whether the company, one of the most powerful new forces in Hollywood, had truly adopted a “no staring for more than five seconds rule.” A spokeswoman clarified there is no such “rule” at Netflix. However, she confirms that the recommendation was, in fact, discussed in an anti-harassment training session, though it’s not an official guideline.

So neither shithole nor insane.

Don’t be creepy. Simple rule to follow but some people need it spelled out, so among other things, don’t stare at someone for five seconds if you aren’t talking to them.

Netflix continues to be a shithole:

https://ijr.com/2018/06/1103557-new-netflix-harassment-policies/

So now people there can’t look at each other for more than five seconds‽ That’s insane.

I know it sounds insane, but think about how long five seconds is. If you were a young woman and an old creepy dude was staring at you for five solid seconds, I guarantee it would creep you right the fuck out.

The basic idea of the rules is “don’t be a fucking creep” but since people (mostly men) can’t stop doing it, they have to try and spell it out. The only thing that is insane is that these people actually need stupid rules like this because they can’t just not do it on their own.
