Info: Interest in DVD Trading Anyone?
Time
Thanks for the OT DVD link-it will come in handy. Whose webpage is it?

I think I speak for many when I say that there are many items on your current VHS listings that are of interest to people around here.......

The Star Tours material is of particular interest to me as a reminder of my trip to Florida back in '92.

First things first, I suggest that you open up your PM's.

Secondly, you need to know what Laser Disc transfer you have. Lookout for a website that tells you how to work out what you currently have. You probably have an existing known version.

Thirdly, if your original link was only to a "My Star Wars Collection" page, without all the other stuff, folk would be much happier. Plus the fact that the current link breaks many forum rules and may just get removed anyway!!!

I managed to get the TESB menus from him, so here is a sneak peek at what's in store for us. The chapter selection menus have full motion snippets and all menus have various music clips playing in the background (they all differ). Check it out:

Looks awesome, I can't wait to see Jedi's menus. TR47 what stuff will we see on the bonus disc.

Info Wanted: Haven't been here in a while and just need an update of site events since
Time
The new set will contain:
Anamorphic 2.35:1
PCM/commentary audio
Menus w/scene selection
4th bonus disc, redone from source-includes 3 pt Leonard Maltin interview from Faces set
Other notes:
A/V transferred from DC
CLD 97 used for capture
PC capture done with minimal image processing (color correction and minor noise reduction)

I have beta copies of the transfer (no menus or commentary), and it is a definate step up from the previous set. The colors are more correct, the blue/green tinge is gone and the brightness/contrast are set correctly. There is no longer a red shift due to DV format capture. The sound is much improved, the DV cam overdriven effect is no longer present. Overall, I can't see it getting much better unless you are using a better source.

Cowclops and I agreed that this version would still be called the "TR47" version, not because I made it, but because that is how people have come to know it. It was the best transfer I was able to find and I championed it to help ensure the true versions remain alive in the best possible quality. I engineered a rerelease to fix the flaws and spiff up the set some with menus, a commentary track and better audio/video quality. At this point I am no longer worried about being given credit for doing anything other than getting this version into people's hands. I made it abundantly clear in the past that I did not create this version, but most people still assume I did. I hope this clears this topic up once and for all. Please direct any technical questions directly to Cowclops; I will chime in when a response is warranted. Screen shots should be posted shortly-I will let Cowclops handle that as he has the equipment and software to do so far better than I can.

Ok, I have had a chance to look over the new discs, and I have to say it is a definate improvement. The greenish/blue tinge is gone and the color is more correct, the audio sounds noticeably better and not overdriven, and there is somewhat less noise and more detail evident. It isn't a huge jump in quality as the previous set was already great, but this version fixes the small problems like the gap in the Leia welding scene, the red shift caused by DV sampling, and other flaws. Skin tones are more orange than red now, but this was unavoidable from what I was told, but they still look good. I have posted a shot below, it isn't great but is a start for now. The black levels on the new set are actually less deep, but this allows more of the black detail to show through instead of looking like false contrast. If you look at the gun in the background you can see what I mean-the effect is more pronounced in other scenes. I turned the brightness down slightly on my TV and then it looked correct. The stars in the opening crawl are now clearly visible, whereas they were almost nonexistent in the prior set. The set is not finished so please do not ask me how to obtain them yet. Here are the stats on the new set:

Captured with a CLD 97 onto a PC
Compressed with CCE
Anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect
2 audio tracks-1536k PCM Stereo surround & commentary
Motion menus with scene selection (forthcoming)

STAR WARS: The Torrents thread

No problem... the set is so badly authored, there aren't even any chapter stops.. the discs are divided into 4-5 titles each, and once you go past one of the title points you can't go back past it, even if you try rewinding, it just stops at the last title and starts playing. It's very obvious the set was created solely for profit purposes, not quality or preservation.

This version is not the LOOK version or from anyone else that is on this forum. The set was made and sold on ebay by someone named "pghpunk13" and a few other user IDs-all the accounts are now closed, of course. I had a version and gave it away as it was pretty bad. They were transferred from the DC LDs, but poorly encoded and authored. You can see bits of laser rot in a few scenes if you look closely. If for whatever reason you want this set, it is sold here.

Info: What do you think of Lowry's work for the DVD release of the Indiana Jones Trilogy?
Time
It's also because Spielberg is wise enough to leave classic films alone (or at least offer a choice of versions in the case of ET), and Lowry had a LOT more time to clean up the Indy films, whereas they were only given 30 days for each SW film, I believe. The only explanation I can offer for the awful job done is one of these:
1. Fox views this dvd set as just a temporary holdover until the 2007 release, and so little effort was put into the remastering. Most of the reason the films were put out was because of demand, not because GL wanted them out yet.
2. GL made numerous errors intentionally to build a potboiler of demand for the true versions, and so consumers end up double or triple dipping for the same films-in other words, it's part of a much larger marketing scheme.

controversial movies
Time
You guys forgot one of the most infamous films ever made: 1980's Caligula (unrated version), which has been described as the most expensive porn film ever made. From what I understand, Helen Mirren wouldn't have been in the film if she had known of the hardcore sex scenes that were filmed seperately by Bob Guccione with the "other" actors. Another controversial film is Requiem for a Dream by Darren Aronofsky. If you haven't checked this out, you should, but be warned that it is extremely graphic and disturbing, which is what I love about it. Make sure you get the unrated director's cut.

It would probably be better if the slogan was not so... embittered. I believe that an ideal slogan should be a subtle attack on the foolish notion that the originals simply "don't exist", rather than a direct attack on Lucas or some puerile remark like those you have suggested. The slogan needs to be attention grabbing, yet clever-the Han Shot First shirts are a good example. BTW, is there any relation between Scott and Gary Kurtz?

HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray
Time
Any company which wishes to remain in business selling HDDVD players will include a red laser as well as a blue laser assembly so it will be backwards compatible with regular DVD format. HDDVD will not benefit anyone except those with high quality HD displays-playing them on a conventional non HD TV set is even more useless than owning anamorphically enhanced DVDs, as you obviously cannot take advantage of the format's superior image quality. My guess is that the new format will be slow to gain acceptance, as most consumers will not see a need to upgrade, especially when the physical media is so similar. For this reason it will likely be expensive for the first several years.

a question for DVD experts
Time
Historically you have been allowed to make a backup copy of a media item you own. It is called a fair use doctrine and has been around far longer than DVDs or the draconian DMCA. It is technically illegal due to the DMCA and this is why 321 Studios was forced to pull its DVDXCopy software from store shelves after being sued by the MPAA-it violates the section of the DMCA that disallows products to bypass copy protection. Of course, any savvy PC user would simply download DVDShrink and sidestep this nonsense-Shrink not only bypasses copy protections and region coding, it removes them altogether in the output files. Not exactly what the copyright control freaks want, but you cannot sue an anonymous programmer living in Spain who does not make any profit or even accept donations for the work involved.

.: The X0 Project Discussion Thread :. (* unfinished project *)
Time
I'm a bit taken aback that you would cancel this promising project solely because of one disruptive member. Granted, I don't read every single post made by the members here, but it seems premature to me. If I wasn't already doing production for my own project, I would definately be providing support for this. I am not that worried about preserving the exact same version as seen in theaters c. 1977, only that the non SE versions be made available for people, and the LDs do that job well enough. As I see it, they are mainly intended to be an upgrade for people's poor quality VHS tapes in a non degradable format. I have had people message me saying that their tapes are about to snap, and are at a loss at what to do! Before abandoning this, please think about the fact that you could very well hold the key to the best possible version, and that the effort is necessary to accomplish that which we all want: saving Star Wars from Lucas' meddling.
