Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
Specifically, they are Malaysian counterfeits. Only the flaky Malaysians put fake DTS tracks on almost everything they make, and the holographic "9" sticker on the other corner means it is a VD product, one of the few dual layer pressers in Malaysia. Typically the discs are pressed on boats in international waters just outside of Malaysia so the gov't can't do anything to them. The 5 Star SE sets also had a fake DTS track, and were Malaysian as well. It is not R2 as the seller states, they are always all region. I can't believe the buyer is paying that kind of price for them.. I guess they're not aware it's fake.

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

Using one of the top end Japanese models would be ideal, but they are nearly impossible to find and extremely expensive even if you can find one. As it is, I paid about $800 for a pristine condition CLD 97 and I feel it will be more than sufficient for this project. I don't think you will ever be able to be 100% to the source material, but 99.8% is fine. Unless you're willing to buy a high end LD player, the LDs and change discs twice during the film, this is the best we'll get.

I just wanted to chime in here and go over a few things. First off, these are LASERDISC copies.. they can only look as good as the source, and they're not going to look good on a large HD monitor no matter what capture method or equipment you use. For most people these are a large step up from crappy VHS tapes, and that's all they are meant to be-a non degradable DVD copy of the true versions of these films. Secondly, most people assume I made the transfer despite the fact that I have stated the opposite several times. Now that the creator is here, it will dispel any more misconceptions. The simple fact is, I was looking for the best version I could find of the OT on DVD, and this just happened to be the best one. If Gonzo's set was the best, I would have championed his set... so it could have been anybody's. As Cowclops has already stated, the best thing to do would be to raid either LFL or the Library of Congress to get prints of the originals, and rent a telecine machine to make transfers, but obviously that is just a pipe dream. The LDs are the best we will likely ever have unless my theory of Lucas' ultimate marketing ploy becomes a reality somewhere on down the road. Only time will tell.....

A Moment of Silence for Dimebag Darrell

agr-were you referring to the 1996 Pantera/Zombie tour? I was there also, was a great show! I have a fairly sizeable collection of death/black metal and was pretty slackjawed when I heard about this.. speculation is that it was because of Pantera's breakup and Phil's comments in a metal magazine that contributed to this travesty, but since the gunman is dead, we'll never know for sure...

Info: what can i do to help?
Time
I have a CLD 97 which is being used for my new set. It is the best player that was sold in the US next to the CLD 99, but the 97 is actually better for LD transfers as it has a lower signal to noise ratio. The only better players that exist are the Japanese high end models, but they are nearly impossible to find and extremely expensive even if you do.

Looks like the Han Shot First slogan is really catching on! I hope this becomes a wake up call to those who think they can get away with ruining classic films. Check out these different links:

Looks like the Think Geek shirt is getting the most attention-but I suppose you could change that, Mike if you did a little advertising.

Just wait until the new version is finished.. I have gotten some sample AVIs and it blows away the current version, which is still quite good nonetheless. The new version will be virtually indistiguishable from the LDs, although a few minute differences you would only see on a large HDTV may be present. At this point, it will be on DVD5 discs as the DL media is still waayy too expensive to even consider for usage-a comparison was done between a DVD5 size capture and a DVD9 size capture and the difference is insignificant. The new version will have the commentary track and the PCM audio as well as motion menus. Also planned is using the original LD markers as chapter stops like the Gonzo version does. I can't yet say when it will be completed, as quality is paramount over speed, but I will let you all know once it is done.

Info: Stop ebay pirates
Time
Spider is correct, Feebay could not care less about bootlegs. The only ones who do are the VeRO members, who are the ones that shut down auctions. Usually in the case of OT DVDs, it is done long after the auctions close and the seller gets booted eventually once they rack up 3 VeRO violations in a short time span. If people want to voluntarily get ripped off, let them. People who buy these items on Feebay are usually just ignorant... I once saw one of the old 2000 OT sets (LOOK version) go for $255 on ebay early last year.. ridiculous, but true.
