The ESB SE also uses Luke's line "You're lucky to get out of there" as opposed to the more conventional "You're lucky you don't taste very good" after the swamp monster spits out R2. Some people thought the line was changed and added for the SE, it was not. It was there all along, just in another sound mix. Which mix I'm not sure, 70mm perhaps. It is also in the original "Story of" recording for ESB.

Are you 100% sure about this? I thought it was one of the many superfluous SE changes. I don't recall Luke ever saying that before the SE version, but I have not watched all of the LD/VHS versions, either. Needless to say the change is still annoying-the original line was much better.

Unfortunately very few people have or ever had an LD player to begin with, hence the need for high quality DVD backups. Even fewer people would want to invest in what is now considered outdated technology just for the sake of these films, especially since you have to change LP size discs 3 times just to watch one film!

I just chatted with the creator of my set and he said the error is due to not being deinterlaced correctly (3:2 pulldown); it was likely done with some sort of software program and you can't do it that way with LDs. Apparently you have to manually deinterlace the signal, because you're taking a 24 FPS movie and converting it to 29.97 FPS NTSC standard, and they didn't do it correctly.

The 2 errors I mentioned are authoring/encoding errors, not the burn errors (corrupted data) I keep reading about. If you already have a working set, then I don't need to send you anything else. I am not blaming you for the errors, but rather duping them without checking first. If I had known about the problem I could have fixed it easily-it's fixed now and the sets are fine.

Does it look like motion blurring? Prillaman seems to cast this set in a somewhat favorable light, but not having actually watched them thoroughly, it would seem he was being hasty in doing so. One thing he mentioned is that there is slightly less dot crawl on certain scenes, but honestly I'm not really sure what that means exactly-I'm knowledgeable but not an A/V expert.

I have the dual layered set and its main problem is what I can only describe as "scanline lag." It can be seen in many scenes with fast motion in all three movies, but mostly in the Endor forest scenes in Jedi.

My originals do not have these errors, so these must be burn errors passed from you (Rikter) to others. I have watched my originals more than once and the only errors present are the 3 second gap and one very brief part in ROTJ in which a speeder bike explodes, the bitrate jumps over 10 MBPS (which may cause a stutter in some players). These are the ONLY mistakes made in this set, so please do not blame it. I was having some problems with bad burns for a while, so I do apologize for sending out bad copies. I can only imagine you got a set with errors, so it would probably be wise to toss the discs and STOP DISTRIBUTING IT-if anyone is interested in this set, please contact me, not Rik. I am going to rerip my originals to see if this will help, but I'm 99% sure these are caused by bad burns. I have upgraded my software and have had no complaints since.

THX-1138 on DVD, please...

I've seen a preview of the upcoming DVD, and it does appear that the changes actually will help the film, rather than being a blatant marketing ploy/CGI test. I have an LD transfer of the film so I will compare them when the DVD is released, but maybe Lucas finally streamlined his editing process and didn't include superfluous scenes/material this time.

Alright, I'm ready to post the cover artwork I've just finished. However my Sympatico account has a pathetic amount of web space for its users. Can anyone recommend a free hosting service that will allow me link to my uploaded files and will allow uploads of files bigger than 5MB.

Thanks,
The Dean

Mackey,
Thanks for helping cement the fact my version is the best around, and hopefully will become the standard for which others are judged. I think the softness you mentioned is due more to the fact that you're watching an LD transfer on a large HD 16:9 TV, not due to the transfer itself. I believe any LD would look soft compared to a DVD since the resolution isn't as high as a non anamorphic DVD transfer. Unfortunately it seems this is the best we're ever going to get! BTW the bonus disc is the same for both sets.

We're aiming to put them into 16:9 format, yes. They will not be factory pressed unless you can find a plant willing to do that! I'm looking to have them available by the end of the year, when dual layer media will be readily available and less expensive. Hopefully DVD-R dual layer format discs will be out by then for compatibility reasons.

Hey TR47,

Will these upcoming DVD-9 versions of the OT be available in 16:9 format as well? Will they be factory presses or DVD+R copies (which will create compatibilty issues with many)? And what timeframe are we looking at for availability?

Thanks.

This is rather amusing, as I had a small part in convincing the asians of the demand for a new dual layer OT set. Of course, they decided to do their own transfer and it came out poorly. I even offered to send them copies of my discs through a contact in Malaysia and have them do their own transfer of the bonus footage, but it never happened. A contact of mine here in the USA gave them a list of requirements, and only about half of them were met. The requirements included PCM original audio (along with their request to do a fake 5.1), no fake DTS, no asian subtitles, a commentary track, a high video bitrate and as many extra features as possible on a DVD9. Well, they got some of it right, and as Rowman set it is better than the old asian OT set from 2000, but it is still mediocre compared to the 2 sets floating around here. The asian pirates who made the set are more interested in profit margins than preserving classic movies in their true format or audio/video quality. I haven't actually seen it yet since my samples have not arrived but I can safely say I will have no part in selling it due to its inferior nature. It doesn't really matter since I have already mentioned before that work has begun on a new DVD9 set which will be the penultimate transfer outside of a professional A/V lab.

Ok, I have finally been able to do a real comparison between the set I have and the anamorphic set that is floating around here:

Anamorphic set:
Pioneer DVL 909 used for transfer
Audio:
192k DD 2.0 compressed from 1500k PCM
Commentary track w/optional captions
Video:
Anamorphic flagged widescreen
Original LD markers used as chapter stops
Fancy menus/intro
Overall a nice set, but they did a better job with DVD authoring/making menus than actually transferring the set, as it is blurrier and the color is oversaturated. The contrast, brightness and hue are more or less correct.

TR47 set:
Pioneer CLD 59 Elite used for transfer
Audio:
1500k LPCM uncompressed
Video:
Letterboxed widescreen
Aliasing/noise filters applied
No menus
Better overall transfer, the color balance is correct (except for a very slight blue green hue tint) and the sharpness is full DVD resolution. It is a more bare bones approach but more closely matches what the actual LDs look like. I have posted a few screen shot comparisons to illustrate the differences:

Anamorphic shot 1:

TR47 shot 1:

Anamorphic shot 2:

TR47 shot 2:

You can see the obvious differences between color levels and sharpness. Overall, I would say go with my set if you're more interested in audio/video quality, and go with the anamorphic set if you care more about bells & whistles or have a 16x9 TV.

Hey all,
Given the less than amicable reception to the sales of my set, and the fact I found a supplier of blanks for cheaper, I am lowering my price down to $25 shipped for the 5 disc set and $5 for additional discs, effective tomorrow. I don't expect this to change anyone's opinion of my actions but I thought an update was warranted nonetheless.

Thanks for the praise, but basically my view on the matter is: you either want them, or you don't... and either is fine by me-I'm not going to get into a squabble about the finer points of ethics regarding it. If it was feasible for me, I could easily print the covers/inserts/discs, add cases, ask double what I am now and people would probably pay it. Anyway, from what I have read Lucas actually didn't want them to be released yet, but immense pressure from Fox caused this to happen due to overwhelming demand. Basically it was a studio decision, not a director's decision. I'm sure the impending swelling of Lucas' coffers probably helped dissolve any last bit of hesitation he may have had.

If I didn't already have my own project going with my LD's, I would probably buy one from TR47. I would rather give him $200.00 instead of giving Lucas $50.00 for that s^%! he's putting out in September (SE only crap). I hope everything settles down on this matter soon. The only person to blame for all of this George Lucas himself. If he wasn't so stuck on his SE only policy, there wouldn't be a need for bootlegs.

I know this isn't going to happen, but I would love to see sales his set in Sept. be far less than expected (if he doesn't throw in the Original Versions). Maybe that will finally send it home to Lucas that we don't want his revisionist cinema.
