HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray
Time
Apparently blu-ray will be around because the Sony PS3 will use that format for its games. This could lead to it being thought of as more of a proprietary disc format, while HD DVD will be used for commercially available films-this is what I foresee but who knows? I meant near future as in 3-5 years down the road, although the first players will be available to the rich late next year sometime. I've seen a few prototypes and the technology is pretty amazing, but you will need an HD TV to see the difference, and even HD TVs are ever-changing in their capabilities. I've decided to stay away from HD until more standards have been set and the FCC mandate goes into effect.

DVD labels art
Time
Labels are really not a good idea, the better solution is to get inkjet printable DVDs and print directly onto the DVD surface. I know not many people have this capability but Epson makes a few printers that can do this easily. I have one myself but it is not feasible to print out discs for everyone, I simply don't have time to do that.

Special Edition on DVD (1997 versions)
Time
No, that set is referred to as the "D5 DTS" version, which has the same front cover art as the "LOOK" OT version, but with a DTS band/logo at the top. The back covers are also different looking. It is not the same set but is actually a good transfer, although the DTS is absolute crap (like any Malaysian bootleg, they insist upon putting a fake DTS track on it). I have seen every single OT and SE bootleg from east Asia-so if you need more info on a particular "release", let me know.

Special Edition on DVD (1997 versions)
Time
I have this same version on a single layer set from the Philippines. It is taken from the same master source as the 5 star version, but is actually slightly cleaner looking. It is otherwise the same as the 5 star set (including menus, etc) except lacks the fake DTS track, and keeps the 5.1 and 2.0 tracks from the LD set. The best thing about is it can be copied 1:1 onto DVDR without any quality loss. I was reluctant to make copies of it for people, partially because I don't like the SE version much, and the fact SE bootlegs are kind of a taboo topic around here, but if anyone is REALLY desperate for copies, email or PM me. This is what the originals look like:

General DVD Talk

DVD Shrink is a FAR better program that XCopy could ever hope to be, especially the new 3.2 release. While not quite as good as a real reencoding suite, for a freeware transcoder it is the best ever. The best thing is, Shrink cannot be pulled off the market because the creator doesn't even accept donations, let alone charge money for it. HD DVD will probably take a while to reverse engineer, but it will happen. If a lock can be made, a lockpick can be made for it. The encryption scheme will not be nearly as simple as CSS, but someone will crack it nonetheless.

Terminator Thread
Time
It's not a Japanese movie, it's the 1984 Terminator Japanese release, R2. It's basically the same as the R1 Special Edition except it's 2 discs to accomodate the DTS track and has removeable Japanese subtitles. Kind of expensive (about $40) but a must have if you like DTS. It's hard to believe how well they can remix old mono source material these days!

Star Wars Trilogy changes

Being an ass is what Jimbo and other trolls like him do best. With that said, the new transfer looks very good, much better than the oversaturated SE version. I only wonder how Lucas knew back in 1982 he wanted Hayden Christensen to be a force ghost. I guess time and budget constraints didn't allow Lucas to time travel to the present to get him for the part.

Info: OT Bootleg DVDs

Yes, that is the only significant flaw in the set, and it is minor at best. There is no missing footage.

stop me if you've heard this one before, but i just noticed something novel regarding the missing leia welding footage (stemming from the defective definitive collection 1st pressing). so tonight i was watching the TR47 version of ESB, and i decided to compare it to intact versions to measure how much footage was actually missing. it turns out that, to my eye, there is apparently NO missing footage whatever, only a ~3.5 second pause. i was comparing it to both the THX widescreen vhs ESB (yes the rare one) as well as the SE widescreen vhs ESB. there is no lost footage here, folks, only a delay. am i wrong?
