Star Wars Saga 3D Conversion (* files are password protected - no known password *)

Notice how the background in mine doesn't turn into big blurred mess making it a good enjoyable watch

My Chewie exemple have blurry background because, well, the camera is moving at the same speed than Chewie. It's blurry even in the original...

I'm sure parts of your version can be nice to watch. But without any explanations about how it was made (or at least a 5 minutes movie sample), I'm not interested in downloading something that have like 75% of chance to be average quality.

I'm not trying to be an asshole here, I appreciate you sharing this with us, I just try to be realistic with what I think I know about 3D convertion. (but hey, maybe I'm a has been already!)

I'd be interested on knowing the program/method you used.

Making quick "fake 3D" anaglyph is not too difficult, but is no way 3D at all. Only a trick for the eyes, and most of the time headache inducing.

Fake 3D only "works" when the camera is moving and when charcaters go in the good direction that make two consecutive pictures look like they are from both eyes. And that coincidence do not happen a lot. Also, when a character or camera change movement suddenly, you need to reverse the blue/red color filter to better fit the 3D feeling.

This is a picture (not the best 3D ever, ok) from 2 consecutives picture of Star Wars (black and white because it was from my silent edit):

The thing is to make better 3D you need to distort the image with a "depth map" image. Such like this quick made one:

This one is quick badly done and would not make good result (you can see some test though, on my old silent Star Wars thread IIRC).

But you can get the picture of the amount of work needed to convert a 2D movie into 3D. Even with the best computer and programs, the human eye is needed at some point, in order to tell the machine what it close to the camera and what is far.

For now I'm more than sceptic at any "on the fly" direct convertion method.

Help Wanted: Removing Jar Jar from a scene in TPM

I haven't thought this through, but could you just make The Queen and The Padme separate characters?

Problem with this idea is that, even with all her make up we can see that sometime the Queen is Portman and sometime not

Sometime actors are playing two roles in movies (Nicholson in Mars Attack! for example) but switching between keira knightley and Portman for no reason would look a bit odd.

Chuck Klosterman on SW
Time

You can't say that a movie is overrated "because of what it did to cinema" anyway. A movie is good or not. You like it or not.  People praising SW in 1977 did not care if the movie would change cinema or not. It was a success because people loved the movie, that's all.

You can of course debate about the good and the bad things SW and its sequels/prequels brought to cinema, but that is not talking about the movies themselves.

Side personal note: anyone who thinks Jar Jar = R2D2 can't pretend to be a serious movie reviewer.

A new Star Wars Trilogy on the way?
Time

To me Lucas can be seen like the rock bands who always played the same music for decades: it can be sad to see/hear them now because they are not exactely the same on stage, indeed, but at the same time you can't really say to them to stop it.  Because it's their job.

At one point they just realized they can't (or don't want) to do anything else. And this is happening to a lot of people in every day life, not just "famous artists" people.

So, you're free to go to the show, or to stay at home, but you can't say to them to stop making music or to not make one more reunion tour and to rest near their swimming pool instead. It's the music they created, they have the right to play it if they want.

What we like about the Prequels
Time

The sad thing about the prequels is that they pretty much had everything to be great movies (great actors -minus Hayden-, great art design, great music, a more complex and interesting plot than the OT)

So much coolness and potential waisted by no sens of wonder, no likeable characters and bad dialogue. Too bad, because I like the world of the prequels. A world without Empire, plenty of colors and strange creatures. A fantasy world that the audience could fall in love with, before the dark times. Sadly what we got was not as good as the amazing artwork done in post production.

Look at those pictures made by Doug Chiang (who gave up for EP3, maybe tired of seeing his great work waisted on screen?), those are some characters that you probably don't like much, but I think they are very good and look like they are from a fucking great movie that I'd like to see.

I'd say the prequels are great... on paper. It just do not work on screen the way all the cool elements were put together.

Sorry I really wanted to be more positive, but you know...

Who Felt Return Of The Jedi Was A Letdown At The Time?
Time

I was 8 when I saw all three movie on 4:3 bootleg VHS few months after the release of ROTJ)

I must confess the only movie I really wanted to see at that time was ROTJ because of all the creatures I saw in the trailer on theater. While I really liked Star Wars and Empire, I was just waiting to see ROTJ and liked that movie very much.

Like I said I was 8 (or maybe 9), now I can see ROTJ is the weakest of all three, but I just can't hate that wonderful movie.

While I agree that everything does not need an explanation, I think the clones sundenly turning to "Empire mode" deserves one. The order 66 is all what Lucas found because he lost so much screen time in the 2 previous movies that he rushed the third movie. So I think keeping order 66 (or some sort of signal that would turn instantly all troops to "Empire mode") would be the lesser of two evil because we just can't have the clones fithing along with the Jedi for years sundenly turning against them only because Palp says so, IMO.

TMBTM's "The War of the Stars"; a Star Wars "grindhouse" cut (Released)
Time

Damn, I did not mention originaltrilogy.com in the end credits?

I did not remember it was you doubelofive who came with idea of R2's sutbtitles, but yes it is! I even have PMs between us of me asking you to use this idea. Sometime I have the memory of a fish! haha.

At least I can add "OT.com" and "doubleofive" name in a "special thanks line" on the fanedit.org page of the edit.

EDIT: done!

Scroll down a bit, before the Awards picture.

http://fanedit.org/8392/?preview=true&preview_id=8392&preview_nonce=7bed299bab

This edit is not perfect, far from it!

It even has white "grindhouse" lines over the black bars on the opening scene... I'm so ashame of this.

Thanks cutnshut

The music when R2 and 3PO land on Tatooine is a version of Aranjuez by Isao Tomita:

All the music titles are in the end credits of the edit.

The "Adress me as Lord Vader" is from the VHS video board game, with JEJ doing the voice (and Prowse being behind the mask by the way):

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Interactive_Video_Board_Game

video footage from this game are also used when Vader talks to an officer through a TV screen and then leave Tarkin to search for the rebels.

Damn, you read my mind Nicholas!

Seriously, I've thought about editing TPM opening (almost) this way two days ago. You stole my idea! ;) haha.

More seriously I really think this could be the way to go for a more "in media res" (in the middle of action) begining.

Well done

The way I edited it, It starts on a bad note. (Anakins reaction to the baby). So now the high note in the middle doesn't seem so high at all. (Them discussing what there gonna do, and Anakin tossing all there worries aside.) And then the whole scene ends on a real bad note, (Anakin letting his lust get the best of him, even after all they just talked about. And Padme having to back him off of her.) Better for this conversation to end bad, leaving questions about these two.

So the way its edited now gives us more insite to the fact that Anakin is slowly gaining more Dark Side thoughts after his ordeal on  the Invisible Hand. Selfishness, lust. He hears what he wants, and blocks out the bad.

and the scene is not much better now because of that, indeed. :)
