4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

How long does a quality restoration take anyway?

With a little over a year to go 'til EpVII, it doesn't leave much time for a restoration project, including all the research needed, planning, scanning, cleaning, recompositing (?), designing of packaging, filming/editing of bonus materials, having the sets manufactured etc etc. Seeing the OT again at cinema or on Blu-Ray before the ST would be fantastic but theres not too much time left for it to happen.... nobody wants a rushed release.

I'm starting to think this is just the 2011 BR scan but before they passed it back to Lucas to muck about with. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

Edit: Yes Harmy, NeverarGreat's screenshot is convincing though. It's hard to argue that that isn't a scan of a different film cell. I just tried to make it line up exactly myself and it's impossible.

Now I'm back to confused again LOL

So this guy talks about 35mm that is idealised by so many fans around here. I completely agree with him.

Friedkin is last person to quote on film vs digital. In that respect he's almost worse than Lucas... except of course that Friedkin is still making fantastic movies unlike Lucas.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I highly doubt any official restoration of SW is going to include the original crawl but I'm hopeful the rest will someday be put back the way it was.

Somebody mentioned somewhere here that the Bond 4K scans had been scrapped in favour of waiting for 8K or higher. The same Reliance video as the SW had shots from the Bond scans, so this could all be very much pie in the sky.

However I'm excited that there at least seems to be some movement towards improving the official copies of the OT, even if it's not as improved as we here would like.

This sounded odd... Pope Francis: '2%' of Catholic clergy are paedophiles'

...in the 90s sitcom Father Ted, there was a joke that was quite similar...

"If theres 100m priests in the world, and 10% of them are paedophiles, thats still only 10m." - Ted Crilly

...and to paraphrase a little, The Pope said much the same...

"If there's 417,553 thousand clergy in the world, and 2% of them are paedophiles, thats still only 8351 thousand." - The Pope

...great comic satire is saying the un-sayable 2 decades before it's acceptable. If 2% is the official Vatican number, then the real percentage is probably higher but still credit to Pope Francis for standing up and admitting this.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Christopher Nolan spoke about the downside of shooting IMAX after TDKR came out. I'd been hoping and praying he would have shot it all IMAX so was glad of the explanation why he couldn't.

He talked about it being less a case of cost and camera size. The cost is negligible with the kind of Blockbusters IMAX is used for and the cameras are getting smaller all the time. Also the spectacular image quality makes it worth putting up with those problems anyway.

The big issue is that they are VERY noisy making recording live dialogue impossible. So far an action setpiece when you are going to dub everything in post anyway it's no problem. But for intimate dialogue scenes it would mean getting all the actors to post-sync their performances, which is usually a bad idea (Unless you're Sergio Leone!).

It's times like these where I take smug, self-satisfied pride in the fact that I haven't seen even one of Michael Bay's movies.

Same here. Unless he's done something years ago I didn't realize was him.

*opens Google in another tab*...

Wait...I was wrong. I saw The Rock in the theaters. One viewing only, remember nothing about the film or the story.

His first 3 movies from the 90s are great 'Bad Boys', 'The Rock' and 'Armageddon'. Big stupid ludicrously unbelievable escapist popcorn action flicks. You have to leave your brain at the door but at least they are fun. Although there is an element of 'ironic enjoyment' of those three.

His work since then has ranged from misjudged to godawful dreck.

Apparently the creature costumes in The Hobbit looked cheap in 48fps according to behind the scenes docs. No idea how true that is.

3D was also mentioned as the reason all the physical scale model work (That everyone appluaded in LOTR) was scraped too.

If shooting 3D and 48fps makes everything look like a t*rd sandwich, then maybe that was the universe's message to PJ that he should stick to 24fps 2D.

Watched Takers. My thoughts align pretty well with this review.

Hayden as a criminal, especially with his ridiculous hat, tattoos, and aforementioned tank top, is unintentionally hilarious. I wonder if I can work a few shots of him into a dream sequence or something.

Next up is Life as a House. Then I have to watch Shattered Glass again (*sigh*) as the script file with my notes seems to have disappeared. Then I can start editing again, armed with a lot of new dialogue.

I salute your bravery and dedication to your ridiculousness art.

Thanks for that. I can barely believe what I saw. Just from a financial point of view, why would pay for something twice?

Such a shame the practical creature FX in The Hobbit were replaced in post too (Must have been heartbreaking for the crew). The actors were saying that the practical Goblin creatures were genuinely terrifying to act against.

Transformers 4.

I will go into more detail in the morning but I just got back from this and I will just say I feel like my brain was raped by a 18 wheeler full of stupid and badly written action scenes and this movies is well over an hour too long. Looking at the screen gave me a splitting headache and I had to walk out for five minutes. I think this is worse then Transformers 2. Yes you read that right. There wasn't a single character I liked and it was just an uneven mess. There were the seeds of a good story in this movie but sadly they were never allowed to grow into anything. it's just a mess and the worst of the series.

That deserves a poster...
