You could be right. These things tend to have various traslations down the years though. It's also more of a visual thing, I can't recall too many story elements turning up in SW. The influence of the story can be seen more in Luc Besson's '5th Element', but Besson reads French quite well I believe.

Watched 'Path of the Jedi' and it was just wonderful. The Force is all mysterious again! Swapping the word "Padawan" for "Apprentice" would have made it perfect.

Was it my imagination, or did Yoda actually sound more like OT Yoda and not wierd PT Yoda? Maybe it was just hearing the voice, which allowed my mind to imagine the original puppet saying the lines?

If I'd learned to read French much better than I did in school, I'd be going straight out and buying an original copy of 'The Incal' (And it's sequels/prequels).

It's a primary influence on Star Wars but I often feel the English translation that I own is suspect. I'd be ordering a lot of other un-translated Moebius stuff in fact... plus the new issue of Charlie Hebdo ;-)

There are copies on eBay I see. I've heard unconfirmed rumours that the sound and video are different on the UK TV cut. Which is why I was leaning towards the old PAL VHS. It's decades since I've seen a VHS of it, so I couldn't be sure without comparing it to the Blu-Ray.

However, I'm 100% sure the final voiceover was totally re-recorded and ruined (IMO) for all post Peter Jackson VHS/DVD/Blu-Ray releases.

I just want it to sound like I remember, goddammit! ;-)

I’ve had a VHS conversion on my mind for a good while.

I want to watch the original version of Ralph Bakshi’s LOTR. I’d need to capture/preserve the VHS audio/video (PAL would be best right?) and then probably replace the video with the Blu-Ray image.

I don’t own a VCR anymore and don’t really know where to begin. Ideally I’d want to buy some sort of cheap conversion unit that magically did it all, with no technical fuss.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

No, you could crop the black on the left but still maintain the ratio. Some shots would be "taller" than others is all.

But, the best way to maintain visual information would be to colour-grade/fix the 2D blu-Ray (If possible), and just add the iMAX shots in where needed. Then the maximum ammount of the film shot would be on the screen. Plus this would of course be a billion times easier (Again, if it's possible to get the grade right).

btw: Anybody know why the black bar is on the left?

p.s. Can we all perhaps not re-re-re-quote large image posts? I sense a certain building and bunny rabit making an appearance if it doesn't stop. Thanks.

But I more meant the standard 2:35:1 shots (For the iMAX shots, cropping is the only option). You must have had to crop them quite a bit? Compared to the original uncropped 2:35:1 shots from the 2D transfer.

I was contemplating something similar on a GOTG project I'm working on. I couldn't decide if I should just leave the frames at the aspect-ratio they are presented at (But enlarged to 1920 or 1280 width), or enlarge and then crop them for uniformitty like you have.
