ROTJ is the best Star Wars film... discuss!

I don't remember any toyetic alien races in Empire either.

Nonsense. By that logic ANH with it's cantina is more "toyetic" than Empire.

There are more possibilities for toys in ROTJ because there is more badass stuff in it. More ships, more races, more fun. That doesn't mean they included all those things purely to make toys. The film was just better with those things in.

"Hey George let's not have a speederbike chase in this film. I know it'll be the most thrilling thing in the history of cinema but people 30 years later will be bitching that we only introduced the bikes so we could make toys out of them"

I was shocked to read of Andrew Lesnie's death the cinematographer of the lord of the rings trilogy.

Loved the work he did on Fellowship of the Ring, he will be missed.

Yes heard this on the radio :-(

When you've watched about 45 hours of LOTR/Hobbit documentaries, it feels like you knew the amazing people who worked on these films. Sad to go so young. Looking forward to seeing him again on the 5-Armies Blu-Ray at Christmas.

Don't worry you are ;-)

I absolutely love Jedi and I think most fans do also...

Everyone knows it's Empire Strikes Back. There's no debate; that is the best film in the franchise.

Not everyone.

I've often considered starting an "ESB is the worst Star Wars film... discuss!" thread, partly for a joke and partly because unlike ROTJ that seems to get picked apart to infinity, ESB's large flaws are given a free pass. It's my second favourite SW movie but it's not perfect.

Han is no longer a reckless, selfish rogue; he defers to others, apologizes when needed, and is a true soldier.

Yes, the Han who has found friends (ANH), love (ESB) and been almost literally reborn from death (ROTJ) is a better person and we see that in the last film. I hadn't quite realised how well this played before.

I respect the Ewoks for the cute, terrifying insurgent fighters they are.

I probablly wouldn't put it quite as strongly as that ;-)   but, yeah I never quite got the "Ewoks are cutesy" orthodoxy. They spend half the movie trying to capture, burn alive and eat our heroes, then the rest fighting a hopeless battle against impossible odds. Sure they look like bears but that is where the cute begins and ends.

Most of all, it's just so, so cathartic.

Totally.

Jedi all the way. Can't wait for the 2.0 of Harmy's Despecialized and Team Negative One's first version of their 35mm scan.

ROTJ is the most heavily molested by the various SE changes. I cannot wait for his future upgrades and the work of others. Just seeing Jabba's Palace in HD would be enough.

For ice-cream than never runs out and I can enjoy for the rest of my life?

Yes.

Especially in this scenario, where I can live a normal life and do whatever I want on my way to the ice-cream truck, as opposed to being stuck in a car.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Bravo.

Marcia Lucas... basically invented the SW franchise

Yeah that seems reasonable.

Anyway... Having been born a year after ESB, I grew up with all three films as one complete package in my mind. So things from ROTJ inform how see the first two parts. e.g. I always think of the Rebellion as this multi-racial, multi-species, diverse alliance of worlds united against the evil oppressive Nazi-esque Empire. That links in with the Imperial Officer in ANH looking in disgust at Chewie and calling him "...this thing".

But apart from that brief line (and Chewie himself), that's not really the case ANH and ESB, it's just white-guys versus white-guys. With the aliens just these wierd foreigners that hang around in seedy space bars, or do wicked deeds for the Empire. I much prefer the expanded inclusive view of the Rebel aliens in ROTJ.

Retrospectively, I think I tend to put the lack of that element in the first two, being down to us seeing relatively small scale engagements, that 'just happen' to not include any aliens.

Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

The Dark Knight Rises.

Last Crusade and TDKR are weaker than what came before, but I have to admit they do make a decent fist of wrapping things up nicely, although there isn't any plot to wrap up in Last Crusade, as the Indy Trilogy are all self contained films. TDKR doesn't have much to wrap up either, as few characters crossover the 3 movies, although the League of Shadows storyline comes full circle.

Where as ROTJ brings all the characters from all the movies and all the threads together in one neat bow IMO

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, although excellent is just a third movie (as has been said above). It's not the conclusion of a third part story.... plus arguably it's a prequel ;-)

George deliberately sabotaged this film so we could never have a perfect trilogy.

Firstly, no he didn't and secondly... I've probably said this before but... ROTJ is probably the greatest and most wholly satisfying conclusion to a movie Trilogy that we have ever, or maybe will ever get.

There are plenty of original franchises with solid, or superior, second entries but only Star Wars is blessed with a third film as great as ROTJ... and that from a man who was trying his best to "deliberately sabotage" it ;-)

Atheists can love... and it's a movie not something to base your life around.

Still though, I found it to be extremely emotional and touching.

This movie exemplifies that hope that I think most of us really have.  People want to have faith in something greater, even if they do not actually have such faith.

Ender, you can't say you don't want to discuss it...  then discuss it.

Interstellar is a strongly a-religous film (It also has an anti-religious moment in there). Faith is a strong theme though and that's not the same thing. Religion doesn't have a monopoly on that, or love, or imagination. Humanity saves itself from extinction with no help from God. He isn't mentioned once (If I recall correctly).
