General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

What were the flags in the theatrical release like? Like the BR, or like the trailer? I can’t remember. I honestly wasn’t looking any of the many times I watched TFA at the cinema. I was too wrapped up in what Han was saying and looking at that cool puppet robot.

I’m getting some cognitive dissonance right now. Do I hate “special edition” changes, or prequel references more? LOL

What is/was the best SW Game ever, on any platform?

GOG just released Shadows of the Empire. This is probably the first time it’s been for sale in over two decades.

Thanks for the tip.

I played a demo back in the day and wasn’t all that impressed. It seemed a bit like a quick N64 port. Still, the high regard it’s held in has convinced me to give it another chance. Purchased!

Sooooooo my GOG Star Wars collection is now complete.

Favorite line from the Star Wars saga.
Time

“I hope so, Commander. For your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am”

dah dah dah daaah dah dah dah dee dah

Also,

“Jabba. This is your last chance. Free us or die”

Jabba thought it was a joke. We the audience and Han probably thought it was a bit of bravura, or Luke stalling for time. But Luke was just making a simple statement of fact.

Discussion: The worst Star Wars thing ever made?

Remember how I said I would want Tarantino-style Star Wars?

It’s quite a bit Like Adam and Joe’s Star Wars bits from the 90s…

Nice that Joe gave John Boyega his first film starring role. I’d be up for a Joe Cornish directed Star Wars movie. He could tell the story of how Ben was a washed up wino on Tatooine for 20 years… which would explain why he looked like he’d aged 40 years.

Han : Prepare to meet Kali in Hell.

Yes! Great idea.

On the bridge, Han shoots at Kylo. Kylo dodges it in an unnatural, neck-breaking motion, and then he stabs Han.

Whole lot of “how the hell would I do that?” in these threads lately.

I’m sure you’d be capable of doing the FX needed for that shot as good, if not better, than Lucas managed for the SE 😉

I made a video about "My Gripes with Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Also you say that every element of the film from the sound, editing, camera work, props etc all contradict the one fact that Rey is starving and weak (In your opinion)… or perhaps she isn’t starving and is in fact a strong and forceful character, in spite of her tough surroundings and so every element of the film is actually consistent with that… which it is. Your video really highlights how good JJ is as a Director and story teller in TFA. Just the camera placements you highlight convey her character without words.

I only watched part of it (so far). You raise some interesting points but make all the wrong conclusions and omit parts of the film that contradict your arguments (By accident or by design). e.g.

You say Rey “suddenly” wishes to get to the resistance for no reason but tell me what happens between Rey refusing to sell BB-8 and the Tie attack on the outpost? (Because you don’t mention that part).

Pretty sure Han was called a General in ROTJ. And why would Rey not know the name of the guy who helped defeat the Empire in the battle of Endor? It’s history.

Does the film actually say she doesn’t know Han fought in the rebellion? She is just way more impressed with his smuggling/piloting fame/infamy in the scene where they meet…

Rey: This is the Millennium Falcon. You’re Han Solo!

Han: I used to be

Finn: Han Solo the Rebellion General?

Rey: No…The smuggler.

Finn: Wasn’t he a war hero?

Rey: This is the ship that made the Kessel Run in 14 parsecs.

Strange Speed Problem with the Dutch Force Awakens DVD
Time

The riddle isn’t really what the technical reason for the faster playback is, but rather why they haven’t converted the film to PAL properly. Most dvd’s here are at the correct speed. And I have never before seen a Star Wars DVD with this issue. It gives the film an artificial look, and makes it feel unnaturally rushed. It disrupts the whole rhythm of the film.

Yeah as Mavimao says above, you’ve just never noticed it before.

All my PAL Star Wars DVDs (and VHS tapes when I had them) are sped up 4%, with higher pitched audio. To be honest it wasn’t something I ever noticed until I started switching over to Blu-Rays, now I don’t really enjoy it. Probably for a lot of European people who are in their thirties now, 1997 was the first time they’d ever heard/seen SW played at the correct speed.

TFA Blu Ray Releases
Time

I saw the UK edition in the supermarket yesterday. Loaded up on two pallets either side of the entrance… I think they are intending to sell a few copies!

Very glad I imported the US Blu-Ray, it only cost a few pounds more and is much nicer. The UK BR is very standard with the normal blue case. The US one is in a nifty black case which really shows off the poster art, plus a slip case with sparkly gold embossed bits and twinkling star field. It also comes with a DVD copy and itunes digital HD copy (Not that I really care about those) which the UK one does not.
