this is really more about getting May out from under that “temporary caretaker government” shadow after Cameron left?

I don’t think she is seen as a “temporary caretaker government” at all, she was the overwhelmingly popular candidate for Party Leader/PM. I think it’s more about shutting up dissenting voices (of all parties) in Parliament of the “Yes we agree you’ve got a mandate for Brexit, Prime Minister… but not this kind of Brexit!” variety. She’s going to ask the country clearly and directly “Do you want a Brexit on my terms?”. The electorate will most probably answer, “Yes please!” emphatically and she can get on with the business of doing just that.

Is my understanding correct that this isn’t really expected to change anything substantive? i.e. the people, parliamentary percentages, policies, etc, aren’t really expected to change much at all

Not really, I think things will change quite a bit because the Labour opposition party will most likely be wiped out due in large part to how deeply unpopular their leader (and cabinet) is, which I’m sad to say is probably for their own good in the medium to long term. Hopefully the Lib-Dem party will get back some seats after they were annihilated at the last election.

Looks like we get to live another week before WW3 starts.

Lets not panic just yet.

I’m not panicking. I’ve been VERY calmly building a bomb shelter in the garden.

Just for “fun”, I wonder what countries would be the “Allies” and what countries would be the “Axis forces” this time round. If you’ve got Kim Jong-un/N.Korea on one side and Trump/USA on the other, when all the other countries of the world get sucked into the conflict, where would they hang their hats?

S.Korea would be for the allies obviously. Would China back N.Korea for the Axis? If they did I think Japan would join the Allies this time. Russia backs China and brings along Syria. The UK would back the US and the EU would too. I wonder if Cuba would chose differently this time? Israel would join the Allies, so would that mean the Arab states would be Axis in response? Saudi Arabia would have a choice to make. Iran might pull a surprise move and join the Allies, if Trump could not p*ss them off too much. India would be for the allies but would Pakistan? You could see how it would rapidly escalate.

Songs That Are About Or Include...Hair!

Y’all forgot the best one. Patti Smith’s ‘Horses’ from the album ‘Horses’. Preferably the intense live version from the BBC Whistle Test…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LqH_Ire-dY

Hmmm… others I can think off…

The Hold Steady ‘Chips Ahoy’. Good band, like Weezer playing Springsteen (or vice versa)…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOFeaedv3Uc

The original/first-released Gram Parsons recording of ‘Wild Horses’…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MchWI3sLUQo

The strikingly named Danish Synth duo Fagget Fairys and ‘Feed The Horse’ (Possibly not about Horses though… might be them having oral sex with each other. Those crazy Danes!). Either way it’s catchy…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0CMx7M84KQ

‘Horse Tears’ by Goldfrapp from their classic album ‘Felt Mountain’…

Hey cool, David Fahrenthold won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. Well deserved.

OTOH, Peggy Noonan won one for commentary, which is pretty baffling.

The fact that now one can win a Pulitzer for writing a partisan political article, that opens up no new ground on anything, just blows me away. I may now have to start agreeing with those that believe the “end times” are truly here.

😦

Sounds reasonable.

Oh yeah…

Just kidding, I remember enjoying ‘seaQuest DSV’ at the time but I suspect it’s probably one of those shows that it’s best to not re-watch now and let the memory stay golden.

‘Revenge of the Surfboarding Killer Bikini Vampire Girls’

Is that the sequel to Surf Nazis Must Die! ? 😉

Probably.

Since Frink didn’t get that comedy reference, I’ll add ‘Red Dwarf’ to my suggestions 😉

You can’t complain about the way you believe someone is if you act the same way, it’s hypocritical.

Yes you can, if they are the President, or the Prime Minister. I’d like to think the leader of a country (or even the most important country) was smarter, more decisive, more tenacious, kinder yet sterner, always informed about all aspects of word affairs, more learned, fitter, happier, more productive etc than me, or anyone else here… but we both know the current Prez is not. You might be content to give him a free pass for these and other character flaws but don’t expect everyone else to.

Funny thing about polls …

http://www.gallup.com/poll/207794/six-partisan-bias-news-media.aspx?g_source=Politics&g_medium=newsfeed&g_campaign=tiles

Now, everyone knows I’m not really a “poll” believer as all algorithms have differing margins of error regardless of what anyone says but this poll kinda makes this thread a minority when it comes to belief in media and confirmation bias.

If the numbers are to be believed, of course.

😉

That poll isn’t about the media being biased. It’s about people believing the media is biased. Two very different things. More and more people people have thoughts like “I’m not really a “poll” believer”, “If the numbers are to be believed” and “belief in media and confirmation bias”.

The media is biased. More and more people are actually starting to realize how real that fact is.

I never thought this was a point of contention. Am I seriously supposed to believe that CNN doesn’t throw a liberal spin on every issue? Or that Fox News (worse than CNN) doesn’t do the exact same thing for the agenda of the right?

Media is inherently going to be biased but what matters is that they try to tell the full story and tell it as accurately as possible.

News of any kind is made my human beings and as such, it is literally impossible to be made without some sort of bias, however small. That doesn’t mean you can’t trust it because it’s only 99.99% unbiased. I 100% trust my own eyes to tell me it’s a nice day today outside the window but maybe I’m just in a good mood and that’s skewing the result? Automatically distrusting sources of information, that are proven constantly to be accurate and reputable because you know it’s impossible to be 100% unbiased is just paranoia.

The important thing to remember is that some outlets make efforts to minimise this inherent bias as much as they can. It’s called journalistic ethics and standards. Where as some outlets actively try to maximise this bias to an insane degree. If you think both are doing “the exact same thing”…

If you’re taking what I said to extremes then yes everything you said is true

I didn’t need to, saying “The media is biased” as a blanket statement is extreme enough. Also I wasn’t replying to you.

The Random Star Wars Pics & GIFs Thread
Time

Maybe this already got covered in this thread last year but…

http://thedreamwithinpictures.com/blog/finn-rey-come-to-life-in-this-brilliant-star-wars-themed-couple-shoot

The couple could hardly look more perfect as Finn and Rey and the wedding photographer knocked it outta the park. This one is the best photo IMO…

Handy illustrations for any Rey and Finn based fan-fiction LOL

So said the people who thought W. was justified for going into Iraq. And how long did we have people over there? Oh wait, we still do.

I didn’t mean invade Syria.

But that is what it means. Nature abhors a vacuum.

So we just let Assad do what he likes?

As sad as it is to say, yeah, pretty much. However bad Assad is, he’s a lot better than Isis. The best we can hope for is when/if Assad and Russia have defeated Isis, he can be pressured into stepping down. Stalin was a monster too but when faced with something even worse, the west has to go with the “Enemy of my enemy, is my friend” rational. It’s all very depressing.

Actually Assad’s hold on power pretty much exists entirely at the pleasure of Putin. So there’s an alternate path, where you replace Assad with another Putin-friendly monster who simply hasn’t had the time or opportunity to get as much blood on his hands. The west can walk away calling it a win, because Assad is gone, Putin can walk away calling it a win, because it’s still their puppet. It could be another ten years before the new leader proves as bad or worse than Assad.

Yes, that’s what I was referring to when I said “he can be pressured into stepping down”. I think we agree… agree that it’s a horrible situation.

It turned rainbow. I don’t like the whole, “I did something with a specific color so that means I’m contributing!” mindset anyway.

This. I don’t understand the “paint everything pink” fixation for breast cancer awareness. “Yay! The NFL is wearing pink…!? Umm… why?”

It would seem a better use of funds to donate to cancer research than to paint everything pink for a month. Awareness, yes, but wearing pink NFL uniforms doesn’t do squat.

This is a Trump maneuver … pink uniforms gets ratings, ratings brings in money from others, then they donate others money to the cause claiming it is their donation.

😉

It’s about awareness. You can donate all the money you like to cancer research but if you do nothing to get people to take regular check ups, you might as well burn the money.
