George Lucas - your opinions of him? a general discussion thread
Time

Those Astromech positions are totally logical next to this:

It’s been discussed before but… Astromechs don’t fit properly into Naboo Starfighters because the props seem to have been built half-size from Chiang’s original concept:

This is not a bad match for the angle:

A mistake, being cheap, to save time, or to fit the set? Or a combination. The best scale comparison I could find was this:

Droids roughly the same size but the ships and cockpits are about half the size.

Jar-Jar… For sure !!! Can’t think about a worst character in the whole saga…

You might think so on face value but Jar-Jar (largely) isn’t in AOTC and ROTS and many people seem to “prefer” TPM to those two.

I don’t understand your comment. I don’t know anybody who likes Jar-Jar… It’s not because of Jar-Jar if people prefer TPM… It could be a better movie without this poor guy…

Not “because of”, “in spite of”. I was suggesting some people can tolerate Jar-Jar but cannot tolerate creepy serial-killer Anakin (Personally, I do think Jar-Jar is so bad that he makes TPM irredeemable).

Point being, if you replaced PT Anakin with endearing/heroic/charming OT Luke in AOTC, it’d probably become a moderately enjoyable (if flawed) movie. If you replaced Jar-Jar in TPM, with OT Chewie, that movie would still be horrible.

To me, the most telling line in either of the Trump interviews is this one to Dickerson: “I have my own opinions. You can have your own opinions.” What Trump is doing here is conflating opinions with facts. The facts do not come close to bearing out his claims on surveillance. But, if you make opinion and fact synonymous you can do or say whatever you want because, in the immortal words of Jeffrey Lebowski, “yeah, well, that’s just like your opinion, man.”

Opinions, of course, aren’t facts. The problem is that Trump doesn’t know or doesn’t care about that. And his supporters believe whatever he tells them to believe. Which means we are in a post-fact political world. And that is scary as hell.

That was the final part of the article. The rest is worth reading to as it gets into a couple of Trump’s insane answers to interviews over the weekend.

Here is the clip of that walkout…

The quotes around the word “difficulties” are yuge.

The reporter was being rather obnoxious though, repeating himself while grinning like that.

I’m only amazed he could keep a straight face for any of it.

Perhaps it’s (PT) Anakin?

If he had been a heroic, charming, sexy, dashing, clever, skillful, funny, loveable, exciting etc etc character who was central to, and the focus off, the plot*… I bet many of us here would almost have forgiven 99% of the other cr*p in the prequels.

(* Like, for example, Rey)

‘Red Tails’ was the best film Lucas had made for some time but it’s still got those Prequel problems. I suspect Lucas used the same modus operandi, shoot the movie, see what you got and then re-shoot 50% of it against a green screen. The difference is that unlike the prequels, there was a decent Director and solid cast for principle photography. Which is probably why you felt…

I’d say one of the biggest things that dragged the movie down was the constant cockpit dialogue.
The acting was good/fine outside of those.

I’d bet Lucas did all that cockpit stuff on a green screen himself afterwards (Just my theory), as Hemingway is a proven talent with actors. He Directed half of ‘The People v. O. J. Simpson’ which was one of the best Directed/Acted TV shows of recent years IMO.

Despite the problems, RT played pretty well on the big-screen, if you were one of the few that watched it.

The same could be said for OT Boba Fett, IMO.

If Boba Fett dueled Luke in ESB instead of Vader, then yes. But he didn’t, so no

Plus I think we all could easily describe Boba Fett’s character and personality from his few lines and actions. e.g. He is ‘Cunning’ because we are shown that he sees right through Han’s Stardestroyer escape plan. He is “remorseless” because we hear (the not exactly remore-full) Vader telling him not to just murder everyone on sight. etc etc. Fett certainly looks “badass” but he’s a bottomless well of rich characterisation next to Darth Maul.

It could be Qui-Gon Jinn?

If he never existed, maybe we might have some prequels about you know, Anakin and Ben’s friendship… like we all thought they would be.

Or it could be Darth maul?

Person A: "Darth Maul is my favourite Star Wars villain because he looks so badass!!!"
Person B: "What else is good about his character, apart from looking badass?"

Or it could just be Dexter Jettster?

R1…

“Make ten men feel like a hundred”

“It’s not a problem if you don’t look up”

Threepio can’t help himself…

“What could possibly have come over Master Luke?”

“I beg your pardon General Solo, but that just wouldn’t be proper”

“I’m rather embarrassed, General Solo, but it appears that you are to be the main course at a banquet in my honor”

“Oh, yes, that’s very good, I like that… Oh! Well, now, something’s not right, because now I can’t see! Oh, oh, that’s much better. Wait… wait. Oh, my! What have you done? I’m backwards! You flea-bitten furball! Only an overgrown mop-head like you would be stupid enough to…”

My prediction Corbyn will suprise everyone by narrowly winning with the remainers voting against the Conservatives with the same zeal that the Brexiteers voted for them.

After all the recent unexpected election results we’ve had, I could never rule that out but it’s still fantastically unlikely IMO. It’d be nice to get the Tories out but the best I’m hoping for is a loss by Labour that is just big enough to make Corbyn’s position untenable (then they can maybe elect a leader that’ll really challenge May’s government) but not so big that they are left powerless in parliament to reign in the Conservatives and unable to recover by the time the next election comes round.

I also really hope the next two months of debate do not consist entirely of journalists asking Labour politicians if they “REALLY believe they can win?”. Please discuss policies and let the electorate decide at the ballot box. Remember the last time when 80-90% of the debate was “Since the Tories obviously cannot win, who do we think they are going to go into coalition with?”… and then they won.
